Coaching News and Rumors

Hiring young, offensive minded coaches — like McVay, Kingsbury, Shanahan — is the trend du juor in the NFL. Jarrah will probably follow suit.

As to Stephen A. Smith, the dude loves to hear himself pontificate. He takes verbosity to a whole new level.

One huge downside of 24-hour sports coverage is the need to fill time. That need has created a home for colossal bores like Smith, Bayless and plenty of others.
He is the hardest radio dude to listen to in my entire life. Just he can talk for an hour on a subject and say nothing he didn't say in the first 2 minutes. I just don't listen to him anymore in the car. Usually listen to ESPN but during his time flip to The Ticket.

Lots of stuff in play.

Arizona State -- Chris Hawkins (USC grad asst) takes over as ASU's new DB coach.

Baylor -- Rhule spoke to Baylor players about his NFL rumors in a team meeting.
Matt Rhule called a Baylor team meeting to address the rumors of NFL interest - FootballScoop Also in the rumor mill, is that Rhule ruled out the Cleveland Browns as a team he would ever want to coach for. Rhule will interview with the Carolina Panthers. The N.Y. Giants are also in play.

Cal -- Steve Greatwood (OL) will retire, opening a new OL coach position at Cal.

Florida State -- Alex Atkins (Charlotte NFL-OL and OC) takes over as the Noles new OL coach. Norvell also added TJ Rushing (Memphis DBs) as the new Noles' DB coach. Norvell could be building a monster in Tallahassee.

NC State -- poaches USC's OLB coach Joe DeForest to be the Wolfpack's new Safeties coach. That's got to hurt.

Oklahoma -- taking a page from the Rhule book, Lincoln Riley is now explaining what it would take for him to join the NFL... Oklahoma or the NFL? Lincoln Riley (yet again) explains his thought process - FootballScoop

So. Florida -- Da'Quan Bowers (Clemson) comes in as the DL coach.

USC -- BOOM! Helton sacrifices 2 coordinators at the alter of Troy. DC Clancy Pendergrast and ST Coord. John Baxter have been dismissed from the Trojan's staff. OC Graham Harrell is (obviously) still alive. Controversial AD Mike Bohn is rumored to have ordered the firings. Graham Harrell (OC) signed a multi-year extension, playing off us (Texas) and others in negotiating some big $$$$. Harrell could end up the next HC at USC if Helton falters (assuming Harrell's offense plays well). The Trojans also lost their OLB coach Joe DeForest to NC State (ouch). The rumors are that much-maligned AD Bohn will personally choose the Trojans' new DC (just internet rumors and speculation here). Bohn is running the show, while Helton is apparently reduced to playing the role of Bohn's bi#$%. The Trojan fans are getting ugly/uglier. And you thought we had internal problems...

Here's one USC fan comment I found funny: "USC football reminds me of the Dallas Cowboys organization , and Mike Bohn is playing the role of Jerry Jones, and of course, Clay Helton is the buffoon, Jason Garrett. ."

Vanderbilt -- DC Jason Tarver "does not plan to return to the staff..." OC Gerry Gdowski will not be back either. Todd Fitch (La Tech OC) is getting some buzz as the potential new OC.

NY Giants have fired Pat Shurmur after 2 seasons..........according to stuff ESPN is scrolling on their screen they are going after Matt Ruhle who was an asst OL coach there in 2012.

I think Lincoln is a brilliant offensive coach who still needs some seasoning to be ready for NFL head coaching. His offense at times seems almost magic ... fullbacks, tight ends, receivers running inexplicably open. That happens consistently against a lot of opponents, but it doesn't seem to work against the fired up or elite ones.

No NFL coach is going to have the talent advantage that OU has over most of its opponents and Lincoln needs to learn how to motivate and get the Xs and Os right across the board to jump to the highest level of coaching. He's young and based on typical growth the in position, can get better.

As a Cowboys fan, I'd frankly be more excited about a coach like Rhule that can take pretty good talent and hang with more talented teams.

You underestimate the talent at Baylor... They have some elite SPEED on that team. I agree with Rule being able to get a lot out of his players. For the Cowboys...they need a coach like Urban who would tell Jerry to " back the **** off and let me coach." Thats what made JJ a winner at Dallas.

Rhule has really played Baylor because Baylor let themselves be played. Rhule: pay me more money; Baylor: ok. Rhule: While I am happy at Baylor I still want to seek a NFL job; Baylor: ok. Rhule to the Jents: go ahead and tell the world I will be interviewing for your HC job; Rhule to Baylor: I coached the Jents in 2012 so I have to interview for the HC job; Baylor: ok, but couldn't all of this wait until after the Sugar Bowl?; Rhule: I cannot control the press, but I will explain it to the team; Baylor: ok.

Our not-so-secret plot to regain competitiveness in our conference seems pretty aggy

Rhule to the Jents is a no brainer (mystery is who will take over Baylor-Briles the father will be considered); I would say 50/50 Riley or Myth for Jerrah if he goes the college route; Coach Meh to FAU is a head-scratcher based on his reported antics at Texas.

Rivera will be Little Danny's equivalent to Parcells coaching for Jerrah. All will be well for two or three years then things will go downhill quickly.

Ruhle will be there next year if they give him the freedom that he requires.

Watch Jerry fuk up the Riley hire big time.

Ariz St. -- Kevin Mawae (ASU analyst) will be promoted to OL coach.

Colorado St. -- Devon Smith (Bowling Green "director of player personnel") will join the Rams.

Florida -- Dan Mullen is rumored to be looking at NFL jobs. Mullen would not deny the rumors... Georgia fans are (predictably) stirring up a lot of sh!t.

FAU -- as reported above, Drew Mehringer lands as the new co-offensive coordinator at FAU. Hey Coach Taggert: better just keep Mehringer as the "Xs and Os" guy. I hear Coach Meh isn't the best "people person" when it comes to the players on the team... :smh:

Miami -- Alonzo Highsmith (Cleveland Browns VP Player Personnel) is being courted by Miami for a chief of staff position. Coach Manny __iaz is still looking for the right OC. Rumored possibilities include: Rich Rodriguez, Larry Fedora (we all know him), and David Yost (Texas Tech OC).

Ole Miss -- Kiffin and the Rebels are courting Chris Partridge (Michigan Safeties and ST coordinator) to be their new DC. Partridge is regarded as a top-notch recruiter. Nothing official yet. Jeff Lebby (UCF OC) is the Rebels new OC.

Penn St -- Kirk Ciarrocca (Minnesota OC) takes over as OC at Penn St. Penn St also lets OL coach/run game coordinator Matt Limegrover go. There is some buzz for promoting Penn St TE coach Tyler Bowen to replace Limegrover. The Lions' former OC, Ricky Rahne, has taken the HC position at Old Dominion.

Purdue -- Bob Diaco (La. Tech DC) will take on DC duties for the Boilermakers.

UNT -- Littrell is rumored to be on the verge of firing his OL and DL coach.

UCLA -- Chip Kelly is still having to reassure recruits that he will stay at UCLA. The admin is giving him another year, the fans are at the end of their rope.

USC --

Vanderbilt -- The buzz about Todd Fitch getting the new OC role (see 12/30 post above) is stronger--almost a done deal.

The hushed rumor last week was that Jerrah is trying to do a deal with the Saints for Sean Payton. This would fit the stalling with the Garrett firing, but could be nothing.
Now that’s a shocker. If true, there must be major dollars involved, both for Payton and also the Saints. (And/or draft choices.)

I’m not a fan of Payton’s character. Such a move would reinforce that perception. But talk about dissing a city...

Tim Beck is reported by 24/7 Sports to be going to NC State as their OC.

Texas will lose a lot of recruiting aptitude with Beck and Mehringer gone. Hope we can hold onto Drayton and Washington and Naivar.

IMHO it’s hard to second guess Rhule. The dude took a massive career risk to take the Bailor job...and has succeeded beyond everyone’s wildest dreams.

He’s in the driver’s seat, can call the shots, deservedly so...

Ruhle has declined an interview by the Browns.............can you blame him..........says in perfect coachspeak he will be coaching Bailor next year

For the Cowboys...they need a coach like Urban who would tell Jerry to "back the **** off and let me coach." Thats what made JJ a winner at Dallas.

On the other hand, even Bill Parcells couldn't make this work. Once Jerry chose pride, credit, and control over winning with JJ, he's never gone back and probably never will.

1/2

Army -- Nate Woody (Michigan analyst; prev. Ga Tech DC) takes over as the D Coordinator at West Point.

Baylor -- More buzz about Rhule possibly jumping to the NFL.
"Baylor’s hiring of Matt Rhule was always a short-term fix, only because it’s always been a matter of time before the NFL pulled him away from Waco, Texas."
Baylor prepared for Rhule’s departure. He should leave or stop flirting with NFL.
Additional controversy brewing around Rhule and Baylor's handling of QB Brewer's repeated concussions (Rhule and Baylor deserve all the flak they're catching about this):
After suffering another scary hit, is it time for Baylor’s Charlie Brewer to consider retiring from football?
Baylor QB Charlie Brewer avoids major injury, per Matt Rhule
5 takeaways from Baylor’s Sugar Bowl loss to Georgia: A bad call by Matt Rhule, mental mistakes cost Bears

Cal -- The Bears are looking to fill their OC spot. Names with some buzz: Mark Helfrich (former Chicago Bears OC), Rob Likens (former ASU OC), Mike Sandford, Jr. (Utah St. OC), Jedd Fisch (LA Rams assistant OC)

Florida St. -- Josh Storms (Memphis S&C) comes over with Norvell as the Noles new S&C coach.

KU -- Ben Iannacchione (Wyo. "head of sports performance", former Youngstown St. S&C) is the new Jayhawk S&C coach.

Louisiana Lafayette -- Cajuns coach Billy Napier plays the admin like an accordien and squeezes another extension through 2025 as the highest paid coach in his conference.

Missouri -- KU S&C coach Zac Woodfin is now the Missouri Tiger S&C coach. Bush Hamdan (Washington OC) is now an "Offensive Assistant" for the Mo. Tigers.

Ole Miss -- as reported above, Kiffin hires DJ Durkin (former Maryland HC) as an assistant, Chris Partridge (Michigan Safeties) as DC, and Joe Jon Finley (aTm TEs).

aOSU -- Corey Dennis (aOSU "Sr. quality control" person) takes over as the new Buckeye QB coach.

So. Florida -- Pat White (Alcorn St. QBs) takes over as the RB coach for the Bulls.

TCU -- Doug Meacham (former Frog co-OC and KU OC) will rejoin the Frogs staff. It's unclear whether he'll be the OC, co-OC, or something else.

UNLV -- Scott Baumgartner (New Mexico WR) takes the reins as the UNLV WR coach. Cameron Norcross (Vandy OL) is the new UNLV OL coach.

UNLV is also advertising for a voluntary intern in S&C. So any lingering musclemen out there who think you know a lot about S&C--here's your chance. There's no monetary compensation, but perhaps they might throw in some casino coupons for prime rib dinners, free drinks, gambling chips, and off-night shows.

USC -- so you think USC is feeling entitled? Check out this headline from the Los Angeles Times: Plaschke: Oregon wins Rose Bowl with players who should be on USC or UCLA
"Column: Oregon wins Rose Bowl with players who should be on USC or UCLA"

NFL -- nobody wants to coach the Cleveland Browns. They're apparently reaching out to Urban Meyer now.
