Coaching News and Rumors

I never attended Lamar but used to drive through the campus to get to my grandparents house.

Lamar has some great schools - engineering, education, and accounting, yet it remains an after thought. The only school in a town that at one time had 21 players on active NFL rosters shuts down its football program.

The only job this guy will move up to after Lamar will be Hampshire Fannett or Hardin Jefferson; maybe Kountz or Kirbyville. Just not a good move.

FWIW, I advised them when they started the back up. They actually had Dirt Winston on their list.
Who did you advise them to hire assuming you weren't sworn to secrecy?

Three coaches with strong connections to Texas HS

1) Darrell Dickey - great coach from Texas HS coaching royalty; I'd steal him from A&M to be our OC.

2) Les Koenig, Jr - Texas HS coaching royalty, QB 12 miles down the road at Hampshire Fannett taking them to the semi-finals where they lost to Johnny Johnson and Lagrange.

3) Ray Woodard from Corrigan - played at Texas and NFL. Won championships at Kilgore JC and Navarro JC. FWIW, I told Dr Thorton at Kilgore to hire Ray.

he pantyhose story is true. Decades ago when girls wore hose every day, they were being "shredded" as they walked across campus. Mobil Oil was blamed, but we thought maybe Texas Gulf Sulfur was to blame. Strangely, the phenomenon never reached Mid County, home of the world's largest chemical complex.
My wife and I both got jobs there working for county and state medical agencies. We moved to the "Golden Triangle" from the DFW area. It was a shock to our systems, to say the least. We met many people who had attended Lamar, and some of the faculty.

Billy Tubbs was coaching Lamar Basketball, and took them to the NCAA. That was their athletic highlight. The team was solid.

Mike schultz should've never left TCU for Illinois to begin with. He took Lamar to their first ever playoff last year and then gets fired this year.

Darrell Ray makes more at AnM than Lamar could pay and doesn't give a shiit about either of the 2 schools and doesn't do anything at AnM but have a title of OC.

But I agree about the part of his genes and his OC ability.

Sadly, I lived in Beaumont for almost three years a few decades ago. The smell from the refineries is enough to cause any rational person to leave on the next train, plane or bus out of town. If one is not rational, then the crop dusters the city hired to spray (from the air) the entire town for mosquitoes which are so thick the swarms have killed small mammals, and driven grown men mad, should be enough.

And finally, I will never forget when my wife was told not to wear nylon stockings if we went to a Lamar game, because the residue from the chemical plants outside of town drifted to the stadium seating, get on the stockings if she sat down, and eat holes in them.
We left as soon as we could.
That is why it is called Bumout for a reason.

Johnny & Edgar Winter, Jerry LaCroix, Janis, Jivin Gene, The Fabulous Boogie Kings, but by that time all the casinos were closed down.

I think thats right Sabrehorn about Darrell Ray at Utah St. Id take him in a minute to be our OC but you know that wont happen.

It should tho, after all he IS named after DKR. And his daddy Jimmy, Sr had one of the best defenses ever in college at North Carolina. And it didnt hurt having Lawrence Taylor and about 8 other all pro players on that defense. Recruited by.......Mack Brown.

Arkansas -- Barry Odom (formerly Missouri HC) is being vetted as a potential new DC under Sam Pittman.

Arizona St. -- Zak Hill (Boise St. OC) likely to take over as the Ariz St OC.

Boston College -- Jeff Hafley (aOSU co-DC) pulls into the lead for the BC new HC. He has 7 years of NFL coaching experience.

Colorado St. -- Louie Addazio (the new HC's son) and Corey Dennis (Urban Meyer's son in law) may join the Ram staff under new HC Steve Addazio. Urban Meyer was a consultant to CSU in its hiring process. Can you say blatant NEPOTISM? And we thought Tom had a tendency to go with his friends when it came to picking (and retaining) his coaches...

Florida St. -- Adam Fuller (Memphis DC) joins his old boss Norvell as FSU's new DC.

Ole Miss -- Jeff Lebby (UCF OC) will be Kiffin's new OC.

USC -- a large segment of Trojan fans remain very unhappy with the decision to keep Clay Helton on as HC, and they are quite vocal about it. It's civil war among the USC fans. The Greeks are sacking Troy. According to insideusc.blog, "USC [is] Now Last In Pac-12 Recruiting." USC is now running 81st in the nation in recruiting (out of 130 teams). USC is typically in the Top 10, and often in the Top 5, in recruiting.

There is plenty of intrigue and conspiracy theories blaming the administration (Folt, Bohn) floating around. Football fans lament USC's attempt to become "another Stanford" and focus on SJW stuff. Remember, USC is historically a giant SMU (rich, preppy, cheaters), with a great football team, located in the South Central L.A hood. Another rumor is that Bru McCoy wets his bed and kicks his dog (that one may have started on Hornfans.com).

The Supposed #1 Athlete in the Nation -- Bru McCoy
sddefault.jpg

Actually rated the #1 athlete in the 2019 recruiting class. Jordan Whittington rated as #2 athlete in the class.
According to some rating services perhaps. He certainly hasn't made any waves his first year in college as one might expect the nation's "#1 athlete" to do.

At least Jake scored 6 touchdowns as a true Freshman.

I will make this as simple as possible for you:

Both Bru McCoy and Jordan Whittington were ill or injured and either never played or only played a few plays in the first game of the season, respectively.

It is totally impossible for any athlete to compete when one has either a debilitating illness or a crippling injury. Ratings do not affect illnesses nor injuries. Such illnesses and injuries are unpredictable. Performing as an athlete is directly and intimately determined by one's health.

Capice?

Bru McCoy was way overhyped coming in, and left a very poor impression on a number of his teammates, including Coburn.

Whether Bru was overhyped or not is a matter of opinion.
The reason for the alleged "very poor impression" may have a lot to do with:

It is totally impossible for any athlete to compete when one has either a debilitating illness or a crippling injury. Ratings do not affect illnesses nor injuries. Such illnesses and injuries are unpredictable. Performing as an athlete is directly and intimately determined by one's health.

I have seen this strange rumor on Bru's illness posted on a couple of internet sites. Didn't he live in the dorm?
"Talk that Bru McCoy's mystery illness was Legionnaire's disease contracted from his A/C unit at Texas, which would explain a lot about his sudden decision to leave and 3+ month sickness."

I would think if there is a grain of Truth in that rumor that others would have suffered also. As far as I know, there is no record of any other cases. In fact the doctors at USC could not determine a cause initially. So I can't believe they're that bad that they cannot identify Legionnaires disease right off the bat.

Boston College -- Jeff Hafley (aOSU co-DC) takes over, it's official. A rumor is floating around are that Ken Niumatalolo (Navy) was pursued, but BC couldn't convince him to leave Annapolis.

UNLV -- Marcus Arroyo (Oregon OC) gets the UNLV HC job. Arroyo gets $7.7 million over 5 years, and recently upgraded facilities. This basketball school is making a push to get on the football map and challenge for the Mountain West title. Arroyo will still coach the Oregon Ducks' O during the Rose Bowl. UNLV is coming off a 4-8 season, tied with San Jose St. and Fresno St. for the bottom of the Mountain West-West Division. He'll be able to pitch a fun city and new facilities to recruits, and the competition isn't very tough. He may take the Rebels places.

As an off-topic aside, UNLV certainly has one of the more photogenic ADs out there in Desiree Reed-Francois. Reed-Francois was on the UCLA rowing team. Rumors say she was on the map when USC was searching for a new AD, but she didn't get it--that's the Trojans' loss.

Early Wins: William & Mary’s Huge & UNLV’s Reed-Francois

Below is Mike Bohn, who was recently named USC's new AD (allegedly over Reed-Francois and a number of others). Well, you can certainly say it was no beauty contest...

The post about Bru is followed by a post saying Dave Aranda is a strong candidate for the UNLV job.

Lots of credibility to that site.

FWIW, Legionnaires disease was diagnosed by a team of infectious disease doctors from around the country, all of whom spent weeks in Philadelphia researching the problem. The lead was Dr Phillip Johnson of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Ariz State — hires Zak Hill (Boise State OC) as its new OC. Looks like a sound move there.

Rutgers— hires Jim Panagos (Minn DL) away from the Gophers to be its new DL coach. While technically this is a lateral move, on the surface, it sure looks like a step down. There is probably something else going on here folks... I haven’t found any remotely credible inside scoop on this puzzling move. Personality clashes, desire to be on the East Coast, $$$ (now or future projections), he really likes the Rutgers HC, Minnesota told him to start looking, who knows? Looks like a win for Rutgers. They need all the help they can get.

One down one to go. I still think we land Harrell if he was staying at usc they would have announced the extension like they did Helton.
