Coaching News and Rumors

Kelly may not have much longer in Baton Rogue.
If they could find a replacement, he would be gone. That is a great job for the right person but has lost some luster nationally.

I still think that Kelly is the primary candidate in Norman, but 'm not sure that president up there knows there is a ND or that Kelly coached there. He's all about the money, saving it and raising it for things other than football.

Surely there is someone in Norman who is sane enough not to let that happen.

However, if that were to happen, it would take 6 to 8 years after they eventually fired him for ou to fully recover (provided of course they do not follow one bad coach with another bad coach like Texas did).

I get that SEC programs are good jobs, but I never got why LSU is such a good program. The state does put out really good D1 recruits. But Baton Rouge isn't a great destination. The school isn't strong academically at all. Just tradition and NIL money I guess?

Why is it such a good job? Money they commit to it?

They do have one of greatest gameday atmospheres in football. It has always far exceeded ours until Chris got here. People would arrive Wednesday to grab a tailgate spot. No way you make it from your car into the stadium sober or without gaining ten pounds. Academics? Have you ever met or heard of an athlete that went to LSU for the academics? Any athlete ever flunk out of LSU?

It's a party school. Growing up in a town that was large percentage coonass, I can tell you those people can turn a trainwreck into a party. Don't ever ask "what's in it". You'll like it.

Louisiana & Mississippi are not large states, but a research check a few years back had them #1 & #2 in per capita D-1 signees. Hence, they come to Texas and go to Florida.

Then, of course, there is the "unmentionable". (No, it ain't money)

Ole' Mack is stubborn if nothing else. He did wonders for UT. What happened to him was the same as what happened with Landry. The time had come to move on but they hung on and were treated disrespectfully by many of the fans. As soon as they were gone, their legacy suddenly reappeared and they became the legend that they were. It's unfortunate when they hang on too long, but the money and the ego-gratification of being the man (plus working with the team) is addicting. I get that. He's Mack Brown, but nobody wins forever. Look at Jimmy Johnson. He could never recreate what he did with Dallas. The Cowboys coach is also struggling. He won a Super Bowl, but he just doesn't have it (of course, Jerry is to blame for much of that debacle). The magic is not immortal.

bystander,

To quote a great friend & longtime Longhorn insider talking about Mack Brown, "He's the most hardheaded son-of-a-***** you've ever met".

I guess UNC learned from us, and he had no "recruiting trip" to go hide on.

Obviously I'm no insider (hence the bystander moniker) but you could tell from his press conferences. I still remember this one:

He seemed very thin-skinned too. Not that I'm not, but it was interesting how offended he would get.

I guess he can always say, "I'm no quitter."
