Chris Beard is coming

Well, Cunningham may not look like much on the stat sheet, but he's a really good player to have.
That is what I hope Benson can also provide: a Cunningham type of "all effort all the time" guy and all around pest. But I have to say I can only trust that Beard knows what he is doing here, because I don't see anything to be excited about.

This is a real big get folks. Mitchell brings a lot of production from the Center position. The front court is now super-solid. The guards' shooting is cold some night--feed it to Mitchell. He also hogs the boards.

I can't see how this could possibly get any better!

Last year: 18.8 ppg, 7.2 rebounds/game, 51% + shooting

"Mitchell is a two-time All-Atlantic 10 Conference Team selection and was the 2019-20 A-10 Newcomer of the Year. He was great for UMass last season, averaging roughly 19 points per game, seven rebounds, two assists, one steal, and two blocks. And he shot 52 percent from the field, 38 percent from beyond the arc, and 77 percent from the free-throw line.

A lot of the advanced metrics do a good job of highlighting how impactful Mitchell was for UMass too. He registered a sparkling career-best 8.3 box plus/minus last season, 26.8 player efficiency rating, .215 win shares per 40 minutes, and a 61.3 true shooting percentage."

"Freshman (2019-20): Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, the sixth in program history and the first since 2004 … Atlantic 10 Second Team, the first UMass freshman to be named to an Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team since Marcus Camby (1994) … Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team, UMass' first selection to the rookie team since Chris Lowe (2006) … Six-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the most for a UMass rookie since 2003-04 … Finished the regular season with five straight A-10 Rookie of the Week nods, the most in team history and the most for an Atlantic 10 player since Rhode Island Lamar Odom (1998-99) … Entered the Atlantic 10 Championship sixth in the conference with 17.1 points per game this season and second in scoring in league games (19.6 ppg) behind only A-10 Player of the Year Obi Toppin from Dayton … Finished 56th in the NCAA, and third among rookies, with 206 field goals … On Mar. 4, he broke the UMass freshman record for made field goals in a season, previously held by Jim McCoy (193, 1988-89) ... His 548 points were fourth in the nation among NCAA freshmen, and eight away from breaking the UMass rookie record for points in a season, also held by McCoy (555, 1988-98)."

Agree on Jericho. But Beard has to move forward starting now.

He can't be left holding the bag on missing on a big man.

Smart move

Jericho's inside defense is spectacular. Mitchell scores a lot of points, and grabs plenty of boards.

I think it’s in Sims’ best interest to stay; even more so now that Mitchell is on board.

Beard will create offensive schemes to get both on the floor at once.Tre is a great scorer and this will open up more opportunities for Sims to score. Opposition must pay attention to Tre.

Sims will be coached up on both ends of the court. He’s so athletic the sky is the limit for him. With Beard scheming plays and coaching real defense Sims will benefit $$ come NBA draft day should he stay one more year.

Sims got an agent. He’s done.

IF Beard maximizes his contribution then I will be very happy he returned. Ramey is a junkyard dog type of player, and Beard loves those guys. The challenge will be to keep Ramey from going into a funk when things don't go his way.

He must have really enjoyed his trip to Austin if he decided to cancel all other visits. I'm really hoping we land him as our final piece to this already stacked roster.

Austin isn't the Austin of 20 years ago, but still a good place to be. However, it does lack the topless beaches of Australia.

Jesus. Talk about putting in work. If Chris beard does as well on the court coaching as he has in recruiting, he is going to blow away Shaka Smart and it won't even be close.

He can blow away Shaka by winning one March Madness tournament game. I am expecting this in year 1.
