Calm, Rational, Realistic Post Game Thoughts

I've taken a few days off to let this marinate and have read the entire thread. Bottom Line: QE hasn't thrown a good deep ball since Alabama "last year". I'm ready to pull the chute on QE. Guy went from a 1st rounder to who knows? Kid is made of glass and while I cheer like hell for him, Arch needs a shot!

I'm not quite there on QE. He's still our starter.

That being said, he hasn't looked right since Michigan. If he's still hurt, he should sit until he's really well again, then step back in.

I rewatched the first quarter and had these thoughts:
1. The o-line did not look bad in the first quarter. Ewers had time and a pretty clean pocket, but the initial coverage was good by Georgia. The receivers didn't appear to do anything to help Ewers out after they weren't initially open.
2. Three big misses/mistakes by Texas changed the complexion of the game. Wisner drop was huge as the nearest defender was thirty yards downfield. He may not have made it that far because Ewes kinda floated the ball to him and the Georgia lb and de were recovering, but if he catches it he may have been able to accelerate away and the play would have been well inside the 20 if not a td.
3. Ewers horribly underthrew Wingo when Texas was on its own 7 or so. Wingo was leaving the d-back and a good pass out in front could have been a td but certainly would have been a long gain. There was pi called but a long completion would have done so much more.
4. The hit on Ewers causing the fumble was a break down in pass protection. Blue stepped up in the middle to take on a linebacker that the middle of the o-line ignored leaving the corner with a free shot. Ewers, who has been struggling with pocket presence since his injury, was not the same after that hit. It all went downhill from there.

QE, the Michigan or Alabama version, is our best QB, and near elite. But unless he plays at that level — and he hasn’t come close since Michigan — he should be replaced.

I think most of us used to believe that because of his experience, a good, but not great Quinn was the better choice. I don’t believe that anymore. What Arch has not yet learned can be more than compensated for by his ability to throw the long pass, and his mobility to get out of trouble and run.

For weeks, I believed that the issue with Quinn was his lingering injuries, both the oblique and his hand. While that may have been the case, it seems obvious now that the issue is as much about confidence and mechanics as it is anything else. I love the kid and want to see him do well, but as a program reaching for the stars this year, we have to go with our best option. Attempting to accommodate a clearly subpar player at the position, for whatever reason, is not in the team’s best interests.

I'm surprised the proclaimed Quarterback Whisperer can't get QE to be more consistent and develop him to be able to hit a wide open receiver in stride 20 yds down field.

Great Post Dukesteer! I know we're not built as a RPO offense but QE needs to show he can either be more accurate especially downfield or bring in Arch who actually provide a run threat.....and a deep ball.

I’m thinking the GA D and our Oline’s inability to handle their Dline has a lot to do with Q’s performance. Plus, I trust Sark’s decision here. Sure, I’d love Q to be an uber slippery, athletic QB but he’s not. Dude can sling tho when given adequate protection.

Ya think?

There’s the rub, he can hit in stride but OL has to do its job, at least halfway do it.
Nevertheless he’s missing some that are open in his reads, that’s my biggest concern for QE. Against Ga not confident Arch would be able to rescue us but I understand the argument.

The operative question is, was the issue Quinn, the OL, the play calling, and how much of each. Sure, all of the above, but…

Based on the assessments I have seen and read ad nauseam plus my own eyes, I’m going to put Saturday’s poor performance at about 75% on Quinn.

Some analysts, and some ex coaches, typically very hesitant to criticize any one player, have been atypically critical.

“Whether it’s an injury, mechanics, or courage, I don’t know. What I do know is the way he’s executing at the quarterback position is not good.”

Duke,

I want the kid to be successful and be a first round pick, but for whatever reason, he did NOT make some easy reads Saturday night
