Cale Gundy resigning from OU Football

I have a friend from way back who is in the family and says this was not the admin but BV.
Thanks for the insight, Bubba - can you provide any additional details?
IMO - if Venables wanted to make a change in his coaching staff, couldn't he simply make the change? Normally an incoming head coach is given the freedom to hire his assistants and dismiss the holdovers from the previous head coach. If BV wanted to make the change, why didn't he simply tell Gundy to seek employment elsewhere? If he wanted to keep Gundy, that was certainly his privilege to do so - and now it's resulted in a (forced) resignation. Somehow this just doesn't compute.

It happened on Friday morning. I think this is all to keep it from being a distraction to the team that just had their second practice and to keep from fighting it long term in recruiting.

^Do your sources indicate any more info forthcoming from the University?
No. It happened in a meeting room before practice. Practice took place and it was barely noticed. BV has preached since December that "no one person is bigger than this program". This highlights that. As much as Cale had done to help stabilize things no one is bigger than the program and it teaches the kids that, like Big Jake said it - "your fault, my fault, nobodies fault, X happens". Injuries will happen, players will quit, coaches will do x.

I think Gundy was a good coach. I think he was an outstanding recruiter.

Bubba
If it was such a "no one is bigger"deal why wasn't it handled when it happened?
How did it take days to go from barely noticed to "Oh no, such an egregious act can't be tolerated"?
Do you think this was all BV?
As HHD pointed out BV could have gotten rid of Gundy months ago.

Certainly the results back up that statement. I wonder where he will go - any thoughts that he could go to OSU and work for Mike?
I'd guess he plays golf for a few months and then goes back to coaching. Hell, if Saban is smart he'd "rehab" him.

Well based on the info that is out now including your info it looks sketchy.
Maybe when more info comes out it will be clearer.

Funny you trying to deride my questiong of this. Why?
Do you really think it was all on BV?

That’s what a funds insider reports. I like deriding you.

HHD,

I have no idea under what conditions Venables was given the job. When Bob said he wanted to retire, he put stipulations on that retirement - the new HC had to be Linc, and Bob's assistants had to be retained if they wanted to stay. If those were not met, Bob sticks around.

Did Venables have similar conditions. It is awfully quite in the Dust Bowl. Phone service is worse than after the Moore F-5

Why does there have to be more to the story? Just him uttering the word at all is sufficient to me to fully explain what happened. We have mostly all lived in this culture for the past while, have we not?

BV's conditions, I believe, were: Get me $EC for facilities. Get me Jerry Schmidt back. Get me $EC to spend on coaches. Get me $EC staff. The number of staff has increased SIGNIFICANTLY since Riley left.

BV's other condition was: Don't say the n word, if you're white.

If as Bubba told us BV had a problem with Gundy and the resigning was" BV driven " why didn't BV include it in his $EC demands?

why didn't BV include it in his $EC demands

1) He wanted the job and didn't think he could get it under "his conditions".

2) Bob was in a position to have his demands met; Venables was not

3) Venables is that type of chicken-**** son-of-a-*****; not to be trusted

I don't think Gundy is high enough on the list of coaches to be on some list of "must haves". I mean, he surely wanted him on staff because of his recruiting connections and his offensive swiss knife capabilities. He's coached everything but OL on that side of the ball. Just like he wanted to keep DeMarco Murray, Bill Bendebaugh, and even a few of the defensive coaches that followed Riley.

Gundy was entrenched and had a mess of kids in Norman.

Bubba,

Thank you. I was just notified that you were having Amazon deliver the 48 pack of Charmin to my trailer.

:beertoast:
Charmin? What do you think Biden pays me? I roll with Angel Soft! Keep your blinds open to watch for the truck.

There was some "reporting" that they had differences 10ish years ago. I think that was people making up crap. Cale and BV were both VERY high on Bob's list.

I think that's implied in most worksites.
It at mine…..
2 friends called each other that and were fired the same day.
Both really good black kids. It’s BS.

Meaning….. they made a mistake. Correct them, let them learn and move on.

I have always thought he was a bit phony. His public statements after this give me no reason to think differently. OU and Bob needed a quick fix when LR ran out like he did and the portal door was wide open. Quick fixes can be a real crapshoot. Here’s hoping.
