Bob Costas Goes Off On Gun Control

I think I see part of the problem. Almost everyone sees themselves as the "good guy" just like every driverr sees himself/herself as the compent one who can text in traffic driving 80 miles an hour. Certainly there are a lot of good people who are competent and appropriately careful with guns. Just a few become unhinged at an unexpected provocation. A lot of murders are committed by folks who were genuinely "bad guys" for just a few seconds of their lives. Putting guns in too many hands, I believe, increases rather than decreases overall risk.

Interesting that the same day as the massacre in Connecticut, there was another attempted massacre in Oregon. However, the killer in Oregon, after firing off a dozen or so shots, was spooked by a man with a permitted concealed weapon and took his own life. Even though the crowded mall was a prime soft target only a couple of people lost their lives.

Soft targets are prime opportunities for crazies. We need to make them more difficult to attack. Gun laws may make certain people feel good about themselves but they will do nothing to stop crime and more likely will make more easy targets for crazies.
