Big XII Baseball Tournament

I like that we got our loses out of our system. I figured we would be mentally off after winning the conference.
We got to win a bunch now. It is baseball-- loses happen.
I'm concerned we could be dealt with a boiling hot Baylor as 3 seed though...ATM 2, Baylor -3 ! Texas Southern -4?

aggy has now won 3 games in the SEC tourney. I'm concerned we'll be playing in their regional.

They rarely, if ever, put teams from the same conference in the same regional. We could end up with aggy though.

The problem runs deeper than that. It is true that the Horns had little motivation in the tournament after coming off this last weekend's emotional high. However, a weakness in Pierce's "zen" is that he cannot get the team up enough to win on the road these last 2 years where he has teams that play not even .500 ball on the road. That is why hosting a regional is so important.

Look at this year's record.
In Big12 conference ----> 11-1 (home) vs 6-8 (away)
Overall ---------------------> 27-7 (home) vs 9-13 (away)

This is hardly unique to Texas. Counting the tournament thus far, as you did, only 1 Big 12 team has a winning record on the road in conference play (TTU).

I would not say we are great on the road, but we are not terrible on the road.

Take LSU as an example. Prior to the SEC tournament, LSU was 29-8 at home this year and 4-14 on the road. THAT is terrible on the road.

UT’s road schedule also included LSU, A&M, Arkansas, OU and Tech. Few teams in the country faced a road gauntlet like that.

Clearly, we played poorly at West Virginia and at Kansas State. However, road series wins @OU and @T. Tech demonstrate we can win on the road. I do agree we need to get better and more consistent at it. However, we are not hopeless on the road. I have seen this team improve from last year, so i have a feeling our road record, along with many other facets of our team, will improve again next year.

Regardless, we always want the regional home advantage if we can get it.

I can't tell if you're being serious, but I get the point. On Sunday, Texas was viewed as a hot team on the rise and the aggies as a team limping into conference tournament play. Now, the situation is reversed. While we may have played our way out of hosting a regional, they have played their way off the bubble. However, they remain an 11th place team that finished 4 games under .500 in their conference (even if it is the superduper-awesome-mighty SEC-SEC-SEC). The regular season should count for something. And that part about them playing their way off the bubble is the nicest thing you'll ever hear me say about that program.

We went 37-22 last year. We went 37-20 this year. We had a harder non conference this year, but performed better in conference play resulting in a Big 12 title. Our record is a 2 seed’s record. We have to hope the Big 12 title and strong strength of schedule might translate into a regional.

It seems unlikely to me that the Big 12 champion wouldn't host. We had a brutal schedule with 5 of our losses to RPI #3 & #2. But we lost way too many games to bad teams. We'll see.

Our RPI is sliding fast.....down to #23 right now. I’m not optimistic about hosting. We’ll know tomorrow....

Joe,

This is a subscription site. Can you summarize? What time will the 16 seeds/regionals be announced?

As of Friday, D1 Baseball had as regional hosts:
Florida
Stanford
Oregon State
Arkansas
Clemson
Georgia
Ole Miss
UNC
FSU
Stetson
Tech
Minnesota
NC State
Texas
Auburn
East Carolina

The last 4 out were Duke, UConn, USF and Coastal Carolina.

It looks like its going to be be close among several teams. For example, Auburn went 15-15 in the SEC and tied for 7th. Usually, a team needs a winning record in conference in order to host.

We are one of the bubble teams for the last 3 regional host spots which will probably come from among -- Texas, Auburn, UConn, Coastal Carolina and Louisville.

The bracket is supposed to be announced Monday on ESPNU at Noon

The Regionals will be played from June 1 through June 4

The Super Regionals will be played from June 8 through June 11

The CWS begins June 16

Thanks! Aren’t the top 16 seeds/regional sites announced later today? Then the full 64-team bracket tommorw?

Mad that Texas (conference champs) got a regional, or mad that they (11th in their conference) didn't? As for Tech, they've been in the top 10 all year.

poor aggy

I remember back in Gustafson's day, he all but conceded that he didn't care about the conference tournament, and that it was better for his teams to lose early and come home to get ready for the regional. He was proven right time and again. So this doesn't really worry me too much.

I never would have pegged this team for a CWS quality squad, and still don't. If they can get out of this regional, Pierce earned a bonus. If they get to Omaha, make it a parade.
