1. Earl Campbell - Tyler John Tyler - simply awesome
2. Vince Young - Houston Madison
3. Tommy Kramer - San Antonio Lee (Two Minute Tommy)
4. Elmo Wright (I loved the end zone dances - he was the original - from Sweeny)
the best i played with in HS:
Reggie Barnes (OU, Steelers, Cowboys)
the best i played against in HS:
Barry Foster (Dunc),
Roderick Walker (Nimitz),
Jessie Armstead (Carter),
Derric Evans (Carter), and
Reggie Finch (MacArthur)
of those running backs, Rod Walker was by far the best. Too bad he broke his leg his senior year. He would have been the next great back at UT. he was almost untouchable in HS.
I’ve seen a number of these f-ballers, but oddly enough on nights they’d soon forget. Like Curtis Dickey of Bryan when Temple beat them at pyle in 1975. Man, 40,000+ for a district game.
The best I ever saw was Steve Clements for Huntsville in the 1989 5A Regional against Lake Highlands at BU stadium. LH scored late to take the lead, but left just under two minutes on the clock. Dad and I both knew LH had left too much time on the clock and SC took Huntsville down the field and won it 36-33.
(My) Honorable mention-
Kenneth Davis
Brad Dusek
Ricky Sanders
RT
Terry Kirby and his cousin Chris Slade
Kirby was a RB and broke the state rushing record against us in Virginia. He was a beast with the ball.
Slade was a DE that was muderous on teams.
Both went on to have good pro careers, especially Slade.
Warren Mcvea, Running back, later played for KC chiefs
Cedric Benson, texas, bears, and bengels
Jack Mildren, Midland hs, college at ou
Bobby Boyd, Garland high school, ou, pros, cardinals and
eagles, I think.
Super Bill Bradley, Palistine HS Texas, Eagles
Ned Bolcar-Phillipsburg N.J.- Parade All-American. CBS Def. Player of the year. ND Captain of last Nat'l Championship ('87). Nicest, quietest kid off the field. Absolute beast on the field.
Jim Clymer (Phillipsburg) Parade AA. played TE at Stanford. big-time size and speed.
Tim Brewster(Phillipsburg) second TE on team with Clymer. Clymer got most of the attention but Brewster had awesome hands. I thought he was better than Clymer. Went JUCO then to Illinois then coached somewhere in college, I think!
Dat Nguyen-Rockport-Fulton-Absolute beast. Dripped with intensity even in HS.
Matt Millen-Whitehall HS Pa. Horrrible GM, stud player at all levels, though.
Willie Wilson-Summit N.J. HS. (yes, he of the KC Royals) best football player that never played beyond HS. Amazing speed, moves, and quickness. He had an awesome career in MLB but I think he was a better football player, as do most from his hometown.
Eric Foreman-Corrigan-Camden. Poor man's Vince. Shame he didn't just stick at LB but insisted on being a QB at UT from what I hear.
Cory Redding-watched him in the HS All-Star game play LB. It was obvious that UT was getting a pecial player.
Chrsi Whaley-Madisonville. big, strong. I have no doubt he will be a very good player at UT.
Keith Dorney. Liberty HS Pa. SHowed the AA potential he realized at Penn state and All-Pro ability with Detroit while dominating a very good Eastern Pa. conference.
Quan Cosby, Mart 2000
Cedric Benson, Midland Lee 2000
Tommy Jones, Crane 1968
Tommy Jones caught 83 passes for 1215 yards that year (83) was the single season record for any class at that time. He also intercepted 20 passes that year, which was 5th all-time in 1968. Tommy did this in 10 games, as the team went 9-1 and did not make the playoffs! BTW, this IS the same Tommy Jones that you will find in the State Tournament record books tied for first with 51 points against Ft. Worth Kirkpatrick in 1969.
In one single season in San Antonio we played Jerod Douglas (set 5A rushing record in 93) Priest Holmes and Wane McGarity. I think ND Kalu played on that same Marshall team as Priest, as well.
Tony Darden and Malcolm Mckensie (Holmes) were pretty good too.
Craig James--destroyed SA Churchill in the 78 semi-finals. He even kicked extra points!
Cody Carlson--Baylor and then the Oilers. He played at Churchill first. I remember when Baylor beat UT at UT with Carlson at QB during the lean mid-80s.
