Willie Mack Garza-Refugio Hands down. Played offense and defense. I they wouldn't have scored so many points before half he would have some of Ken Halls records.
Wesley Roberts from Palo Duro was a stud and so was his teammate Greg Sellmeyer.
From that same period James Mayberry from Tascosa was a great player.More recently saw aaron Humphrey, Kendall Briles, and David Thomas completely own games.
George Cumby. Sadly, he went to ou, but he was a stud. He played at Brownsboro ( my old school ). His senior year he was too old to play by U.I.L. rules and played at T.K. Gorman in Tyler. Oddly enough, I always thought his older brother, Mack, was better, but in those days the big boys didnt recruit the small schools as much and Mack fell through the cracks. Still had a nice career in JC ball and UNT
Bill Bradley - Palestine High Shool, Palestine, Texas
Great multi sport athlete in high school. Came to UT and was the starting quarterback until James Street took over to start the wishbone era. Went on to be an all pro defensive back with Philadelphia. Great punter too. I actually tackled him once in a game in which his team won by one point and went on to win State title in Class 4A in 1964.
Heck, I had an interception off Tommy Kramer. I won't mention the three TD's I witnessed personally. But proud to say there were 12 other completions that night I was able to keep out of the end zone. Still chase Richard Osborne and Pat Rockett in my dreams occasionally and they were exceptional, but Tommy was on another level by himself.
I know that some of you guys haven't gotten out much in the past on Friday nites. My best players are in no particular order....
Earl Campbell ( would win heisman today )
Joe Washington ( kid was special )
Garrett Gilbert ( think about it )
Billy Sims ( I know I know )
Curtis Dickey ( aggie )
Steve McMichael ( played mlb at Freer 2a....ouch )
Charles Waggoner ( started in front of James and Dickerson prior to getting hurt at SMU....and yes he was a freshmen when they were )
Donald Guillot ( all around ath. at Port Isabel HS ) went on to play baseball at Pan American and broke the NCAA record for stolen basis in one year ) Don't laugh Pan Am was a power in the 80's.
Back in my HS days, it was Craig James. I think he averaged just over 10 yards per carry. Ironically, the best football player at our school went to SMU as a RB. You can guess how many carries he got with Dickerson and James in the backfield. To make matters worse, I don't think he even got a free trans am
One of the most exciting I ever saw was Herkie Walls running the option as a QB at Garland High. I saw him about 4 times his senior year and he made everyone else look like they were running in molasses.
Ja'Mar Toombs, laugh as you may but i grew up with him going to Pine Tree until Kilgore got his mom a job. Nobody could stop him from what i remember. Would've been alot faster if he hadn't broke his leg in junior high, never walked the same.
Matt Stafford, saw him play his sophomore year against Kilgore in the playoffs at Rose Stadium in Tyler
I'll probably get ripped for this, but Graham Harrell was among the more accurate passers I ever saw in HS.
Also, on the more obscure front: in the mid-80s, Corsicana had a RB named Bill Jones who was a man among boys. I think he went to SWT for a while, then emerged in the NFL for a few years.
The proverbial man among boys-Norm Buliach of La Marque. What a player...running back, I think he played linebacker or db on defense, kicked off, returned kicks. He singlehandedly destroyed my high school one year (Ball High), scoring in all three phases of the game.
He was injured almost his entire college career at TCU, I believe, then played several years for Miami in the pros.
Cedric Benson was another great high school player I personally saw play-didn't see a lot of the other greats, but most of them have been mentioned on this thread.
