Best option QB ever?

McBath was the starting QB against OU in '77 before he went out in the 1st Qtr with a season ending (and ultimately career ending) injury, soon to be followed by the backup John Aune. That's the game Randy McEachern came in to lead UT to victory and finish out the season.

From what I remember, McBath came back the next year, then decided to pursue medical school instead of coming back for his senior year and is presently a well known surgeon in Houston.

McBath did play 4 games as a freshman in 76 and we were still running the bone. That was DKR's last year. Earl was injured much of the year and QB was our achilles heal from the get go. We had Ted Constanzo, Mark Cordaro, the finally Mcbath who won 2 of the 34 games he started. Mcbath did return from his 77 knee injury in 1978 and led us a 42-0 victory over Maryland in the Sun Bowl that year.

I'm gonna nominate Donnie Little as well simply because next to Earl he was my favorite player.

I believe our Sooner friend is correct about Frazier not being a true triple option QB.

That said, Marty Akins has always been an underrated Wishbone QB IMHO. I saw the guy play and he knew how to work the offense.

AF QBs like Morgan and Dowis and the current Falcon HC Troy Calhoun were all terrific as well. But one of the best triple option QBs ever was Nolan Cromwell at Kansas. I've watched film of that guy and he was great. The Jays beat OU in 1974 with Cromwell at QB. OU still hasn't figured out how to stop him.

Alan Lowry beat Alabama in the 73 Cotton Bowl.

The Sooners are correct. Nebraska never ran a true "triple" option. The FB getting it was a called play usually by the QB audibling at the LOS.

I believe Frazier was a 49% passer but did have a very good TD/INT ratio and also had a pretty good QB rating which takes into heavy account the statistic yards/attempt. Still, Frazier could make some great passes but just as many didn't come within 5ft of the WR.

I still think the best part about Frazier was his ability to run the offense (ala Tom Brady). He was a true coach on the field in terms of his mastery of the offense, players strengths, and using all the tools available to him. He was the maestro.

Brook Berringer did replace him as a Jr. but I'd argue strongly but he didn't run the offense that Frazier did. The option was all but gone under Berringer relying heavily on the power run game with a heavy dose of play action passing. Before Berringer's unfortunate death he was projected as a 2nd-3rd round pick at QB...as a backup QB.

Whomever mentioned Scott Frost as an good technician of the option was spot on. He had LB size (6'3", 230lbs) so he delivered much more punishment then he received. Frost also made very good decisions. The punishment NU doled out in '97 was crazy due to the Frost's size and their starting RBs (Alexander 6'1" 265lb w/4.4 speed and Buckhalter who is the #2RB with the Eagles at 225lbs).

I loved Street and Akins and Phillips, and even Donnie Wigginton, but, sad to say, I think the Sooners had the best wishbone QBs... Holloway, Lott, Mildren, Watts, even Charles Thompson were all great.

When it comes to the "Best option QB ever", I think you kind of have to define it a little. If you're talking about the wishbone triple-option, then I think it's pretty close with a lot of the guys mentioned throughout the thread. If you're talking about other kinds of option QBs, then Frazier would fit in there and be at the top. If you're including the zone-read option, then there's nobody who's really close to Vince Young.

If you're just talking about the very best college football player who ever strode upon this earth, then, well, once more it's Vince Young.

Oh, and although picking the best wishbone QB ever would end up a pretty close battle, if you decide to pick the very best wishbone fullback ever? It's no contest... Anybody who doesn't pick Earl is just not being serious...

I realize most of the discussion has been focused around I-form option and wishbone option, but what VY ran at Texas was an option offense. It was just run out of the shotgun instead of under center. Using this reasoning I have

1a. VY
1b. Frazier
