Baylor @ Texas 02/27/2023

Substitution patterns were indefensible. IMHO this one is on Vic. Yes we have injuries but he pulled Faye early and quickly. Amina was tentative from the beginning. She will be really good one day but it wasnt today.

I have absolutely nothing good to say except that Jones had 15 points and 13 rebounds, so I am going to say absolutely nothing except that Jones had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Their shots were bouncing in and ours were bouncing out. DeYona was basically dragging one foot after she was injured and probably under any other circumstance would not have gone back in the game. She was in pain it appeared the rest of the game

They picked a bad time to have a really bad game--bad in all phases. Taylor Jones was all we had for a significant stretch in the second half and she had to fight for everything she got. Correct me if I'm wrong (I was at the game and sometimes when I think about it later I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly--it stinks getting old) There was a point when the game was still close where we got a steal and Rori was going for a layup, the crowd was going wild. Somehow she went up to lay it up and didn't let go--didn't get a foul or a bucket and was called for a travel. A huge momentum swing and a lot of enthusiasm sucked from the room.

Whatever is going on, played out in the post game presser. Anyone have the video, because what’s coming out on Twitter doesn’t sound good.

Despite all of the comments in the post-game presser about lack of effort, Vic caught himself at one point admitting what I think is the biggest truth:
(1). That we held them to only 26 second half points; and
(2). The problem was our lack of scoring - and he admitted fatigue probably had something to do with that. [Yeah, no sh*t].

If this game was played on Wednesday (or if we didn't have 4 other guards out injured, and another one taking a year off), I'm pretty damn sure the outcome would have been different. Those three guards that we have had to play 40 mins (Shay almost did) at OU, and chase around the #2 offense in the country, and then were asked to come back and do it again on 48 hrs rest. Baylor played 5 guards tonight and they only had to play Tech (in Waco) on Saturday. That's a big difference. We'll be ok for Saturday because we'll be rested and at least get Jak back to spell some minutes. But we really need to get Sonya back by tournament time, or these depth issues at guard are going to kill us.

I'm more worried about this team after hearing some of the comments in this press conference than I was after the poor performance. I guess they probably critique each other's performances after every game and the ones getting criticized don't take offense. But Rori's comments in particular seemed like throwing her teammates under the bus. We couldn't hear the questions, but it seemed like someone asked about it because Vic said something like they were just being accountable. Sounded to me like they were holding others accountable. Again, that may be fine in the locker room, but I'm not sure it helps the team to talk about it to the press.

She is hurt. Morris is gone for the year I guess

we have no playets
I don’t think Morris is out for the year. I don’t think she will be playing until possibly the ncaa tournament or big 12 tournament. Texas does seem to downplay injuries. I’m now worried about Gaston and her back.

We didn't play well and lost. We struggled against Baylor with a number of contributing factors which led to our defeat. I understand the disappointment everyone feels but as bad as we feel, I am sure the players and coaches feel worse about their performance today. Hopefully we will get some much needed rest over the next several days, allow some injuries to heal, and get refocused for our last game leading into the Big 12 Basketball Tournament. We are 13-4 and still control our own destiny....our goals are still within reach. Today was just a setback. I believe this team still has a lot of fight left in them as they continue to deal with and overcome injuries. I expect our team to rebound from this defeat in a positive way.
The crowd (10,763) was great today; it was nice to see the Austin community come out to support the team and the Neighborhood Longhorns Program. I also loved the Senior Day ceremony for Femme and Anissa.....what amazing young ladies! Their heartfelt messages brought tears to my eyes, as did Vic's caring message about each one of them. It's always nice to win, but athletics is so much more than just about wins and losses. It's also about human relationships and the experiences and memories. We are fortunate to have both wonderful ladies and coaches representing the University of Texas. Hook'em!

Obviously we were pretty bad in all phases. To me, our defense was especially troubling. They drove around us almost at will. So many of their points were in the paint, and we couldn't do anything about it. Keeping your player from getting to the basket is fundamental basketball. It is about foot moment and angles. This is not so much a premium in the high pressure game Vic runs, and it showed bad tonight. Our efforts at help side didn't help much. Our pressure did not get many turnovers that I remember. I think most of their turnovers were nonforced. The whole thing was a bummer.

This game was demoralizing, but we will come back. The team that played against OU Saturday night is not gone. I think we were so elated at Saturday's performance that we were taking Baylor for granted. It would be nice to get Morris back, but who knows.

Joe Dallas,
We sorely miss JAT and her outstanding defensive work. I hope Vic finds some way to upgrade the quickness department before next season.

(1) We ran into a very physical team that had a goal of making every foul hurt or put you on the ground. We are not a very physical team. Refs went from allowing the play to calling out everything to allowing them to play. (2) It is impossible to win a game when you have 2 1/2 shooters because Baylor did not need to guard 2 players on the floor. Baylor took Gonzales out of the game by staying in front of her the entire game. The lack of a bench is a serious issue. Substitutions are not the issue when no one on the bench can score. (3) The Baylor coach is not good at going with the flow of the game. When 5 has half the points why would you not run the team through her the entire game. When you are shooting 50% 3s, why are you not setting up more 3s. They should have won by 20. Baylor outschoolled us at our home again. Hats off to them, but we have to be better. (4) An important factor is that Baylor has our number and for some reason we play better and they let up at home. But here, they played for their coach and her job. Incredible. Baylor fans did not show up here. It is a mental thing. We play them scared and they play us with the desire to knock us to the ground every play. (5) Harmon probably had a concussion and Gaston hurt her back seriously. Those fouls were not even reviewed at the monitor by the officials. Taking Gaston out of the game had a major impact on the outcome. (6) Incredible senior night celebration and a majority of our crowd stayed behind. Class act. I know people complain it was at the end of the game but it is so hard to do it at the beginning against an opponent like Baylor in a ESPN2 game.

Fatigue... the toll that it took to destroy OU on Saturday with no depth showed itself last night. That said, I have to agree with Rori in saying that if she and Shae can play the way they did for 40 minutes on Saturday then turn around two days later and AT LEAST put forward the same level of effort and intensity, then post players that I won't name should have been doing the same.

Although Taylor Jones didn't play the whole game on Saturday, she played a lot and was tough... and was tough again against Baylor. There is no excuse for poor effort. The fatigue may make you less effective, but at least put forth the effort. I'll say it again, if you're going to advance in the NCAA's then that's what will be required. Suck it up. That's all anyone is asking.

We lost this (and more than a few other) game(s) in the off-season last year. Vic needs to make sure that doesn't happen again. Yes, perhaps this is way more injuries than he could have anticipated, but we need to at least start with the premise that we will have 7-8 healthy guards when the season starts. We already knew going into the season that there would be 2 guards sitting due to rehab, and one that left in early July. I get that Kyndall's issues likely were not anticipated. But that is 4 guards lost before the season even started and almost 1/3 of the roster. That can't happen again.

I was at the game. Vic and Faye had a big argument on the sideline and she never came back in the game. I think Vic is a great coach, but he had a bad night too. He pretty much watched impassively when I believe he needed to show some emotion to try to fire up the troops. He just seemed resigned to their fate early on.

I just don't get the letdown this team had. It seems like the Oklahoma win should have spurred this team forward. Like "hell, yeah" we've got this!

Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other team. Baylor played hard and quite frankly, acted like they wanted it more. UT came into the game short handed and off a big win. All that can be a factor. If this game were played Thursday we would probably have a different discussion.

I saw that exchange too. Faye only played for 9 minutes and was pulled immediately upon making a mistake (she had 3 TO's and missed a defensive assignment(s) on Littlepage-Buggs). IMO if Vic would have given Faye a chance to play through her mistakes, she may have been an effective sub for Gaston who was obviously struggling with her back/hip injury in the second half.

Faye has an incredibly short leash with Vic. One mistake/one foul and she's pulled.

A friend and I were just discussing this morning that... "I bet you Vic doesn't allow himself to be in this position again if there's any way he can help it." It seems he thought he had good quality depth at the guard position, and that there would be plenty of minutes for all and nobody would have to play 40 minutes night in and night out. But then two that would have been playing major minutes and contributing a lot were lost.

Lesson learned... with the transfer portal the way it is now, STOCK UP. Roll the ball out and let them earn their minutes. If it's too hard for them that way, then they NEED to exercise their portal options. But never try to get by with "just enough" guards (or any other position for that matter).

I'll say this about OU... their players seem to have bought into the TEAM concept where individuals don't feel they have to be on the floor the whole time. When their coach substitutes freely it doesn't seem to be an issue, and they don't drop off a whole lot because all their players are getting a good amount of minutes. That keeps everyone's legs relatively fresh and also facilitates experienced depth.

Faye came in and threw a ball into the stands when trying to get it to Taylor. He took it out on her rather than the team. Clearly, Faye needed to go back in the game. We came within 3 several times and simply could not take the crowd energy and score a bucket. I did not see the TO that could have helped to refocus the team.
