Avery Johnson Fired

I lost faith in Avery after the Golden State series last year. When you win more regular season games than any team in the history of your franchise, you don't change what you do best when you play the #8 seed in the playoffs. You make them adjust to you.

except Jerry Jones didn't have the balls to fire Parcells.

Cuban = dumbass
Maybe his team would be doing better if he didn't do that stupid *** deal to get the over paid under performing Kidd!!!

Johnson is better off. His resume is better now and he can work for someone who is sane. Also if he lost the teams respect or attention it is because he has been undermined by Cuban.

my understanding is the kidd deal was ALL avery's. he paid for that deal w/ a first round loss and getting **** canned.

I will be shocked if Avery is an assistant anywhere next year. Surely he'll get a HC job.

He did some amazing things here. There is no doubt we needed his emphasis on defense. But it hasn't worked. We couldn't get stops when needed, and now the offense is weak too.

While I agree it was time for Avery to go, I firmly believe this team over achieved over the past 3 years. Look at the roster. They don't have anyone on the team who can routinely create easy shots for themselves or others. They don't have a respectable low post scorer, and they don't have a lock down defender. Dirk is amazing because he knocks down tough shots consistently, but make no bones about it they are still very tough shots that he usually takes.

The fact that this team won 67-15 last year is totally amazing in my eyes. Think of all the other teams in NBA history who have won as many as 65 games or more. Their rosters were much more talented than the Mavs last year.

Cuban had to get rid of Avery due to the team basically getting tired or his control-freak mentality. He's a lot like Parcells in that after awhile his personality and coaching style had to wear on his players.

Avery had to go. You can't win with more 30 somethings than 20 somethings (unless they are truly gifted/motivated - see Boston Celtics). Low post scoring and defense are a must as well as another slashing threat (Howard has completely abandoned the type fo play that got him into the All-Star game). You also need a young lock down defensive guard to go against the speedy PGs dominating the West. Harris was that player and Avery sent him packing with his insistence for Kidd. The coaching lapses were also shocking at times as has been indicated by preious posts on this thread. However, who the heck does Dallas go after nowas HC?

I'm not saying Harris wouldn't have guarded Paul/Pargo better than Kidd because he's younger and quicker, but he's not exactly a "lock down defensive guard" either.

Is it just me or does Avery's personality seem much more suited to college ball? I think he will spend next season as an assistant. He sort of got fast-tracked into the HC job, and I think he might have missed out on some experience.

He will get another coaching job this year. If not then next year for sure. He is a good coach, but the split had to happen. Both parties were tired of each other.

my prediction is that he will be the Bulls next HC in next week or so. I think he's been working on his next job for the last half of the season.

So Cuban is a dumbass?? Well he must be doing something right.

In the 12 years before cuban bought the team in 2000 they were a paltry 324-628 with only 1 playoff apperance which was a 1st rd sweep by Portland in 90.
Since then they are 458-199, making the playoffs every single year and a finals appearance.

Avery is a good coach but probably a bad fit for this team, he will have a HC job w/i 2 years again.

I agree that there needs to be a shake up and that the Kidd trade wasnt very smart but i am confident that Cuban will have a team that will challenge w/i a few years.

As long as Cuban's still the owner they could be competitive next year. He is an Owner that will not sit still and is not afraid of making big deals. Now, if he decides he's had enough and takes off for the Cubs, then all bets are off for this franchise...

Actually, I'm not sure if I agree with the sentiment that the Mavs overacheived, but I can understand it.

At one point they had Nash, Van Exel, Finley, and Dirk all in their starting lineup, and then they lost 3 of those guys and yet if anything they got better.

I am a Mavs homer, but I thought what Donnie Nelson and Don Nelson did to the mavs roster between 2003 to 2005 was genius.

They completley changed over a 2003 Mavs team that had the best record in the league and made it to the Western Conference Finals. While that team was good that lacked the athleticism and size down low to ever beat San Antonio or Los Angeles.

By 2006 a completley different team made it to the Finals. Dirk and Adrian Griffin were the only two players that were constants.

The big difference I see between now and 2004 is that the Mavs don't have anywhere close to the assets they had in the Summer of 2004.

I would try to trade some of this dead weight for some draft pciks.
This team can get good again by drafting some Josh Howards, Marquis Daniels and signing some sleepers like DeSagana Diop and Brandon Bass.

Signing these washed up, has beens like Malik Allen, Juwan Howard and Eddie Jones is one of the reasons this team was pretty poor this year
