Augustin vs. TJ Ford

TJ was nails down the end making free throws. At this point you can't trust DJ to make those big free throws and that's scary when you can't trust your point guard. TJ could also get to the rim and draw the foul when the clock hit 5 seconds.

TJ was so great at finishing games because his defender couldn't stay in front of him. He didn't have a great shot but he could get to the rim at will and would got to the foul line all the time.

I'll never forget that OU game, in Norman, where he brought the Horns back from 15 or 16 to win. I believe that was their Senior Day also. Pretty much won himself the POY award with that game.

DJ is great no doubt, but put TJ on this team with Connor, James, Abrams, Johnson, etc and we might be undefeated. DJ isn't as good at hitting guys off the screen and roll as TJ is. He'd probably be averaging double digit assists with these guys.

I think it's too close to call (or too early to call at this point). I would say TJ right now because he led us to the final four. But depending on what happens in the tournament this year and whether DJ comes back, it will be very close.

Comparing just their sophmore seasons, DJ has scored about 4 more points a game, but TJ had about 1.5 more assists per game. They have nearly identical free-throw percentages. DJ plays a lot more minutes per game, which I think is often crucial for us. It's a very difficult call...

I wonder how many of you will change your tune after DJ leads us to the national championship this year ?????

Yes I predict this team is going to win it all.

TJ FORD!! EASILY!! He took Texas to the final four, was the player of the year that year(Augustin won't be), was smaller than Augustin, and had overall more talent as a true point guard easily. Augustin is a hell of a player and I think he is going to turn out in the mold of a D williams of Utah but for now TJ Ford for sure!

TJ... regardless of what we win this year. i'm not sure i've seen a player at any level anticipate as well as TJ. sometimes it seemed like he knew where a teammate was going before they did and he would have the ball waiting there for them when they got there.

What about TJ's defense? This was never a strong suit for him. DJ is a better defender. TJ had more steals, but DJ still plays better defense.

No question that TJ dishes the ball better, which on the offense end is a big responsibility of the PG.

However, DJ holds onto the ball better, which is another key responsibility. No sense in throwing the bullet pass if the other player is incapable of catching it. 2.8 TOs per game vs. 4.0 for TJ.

I frankly don't see how this is the slam dunk that everyone is making it out to be. If the statements were Tj by a hair, then I can agree. However, TJ and it's not even close makes no sense to me.

TJ was a once in a lifetime player because many of us had never watched a truly great player in a Texas uniform. Those guys tended to go play in places like North Carolina. However, since TJ and no doubt b/c of him, we have had two additional super special players with Durant and DJ.

Our standards have been raised, which is great and a testament to both Barnes and TJ.

TJ

I just watched TJ play tonight. TJ is just on a completely different speed than every one on the court. He makes professional defenders look as bad as DJ makes college defenders look. By the way, TJ is again 100%.

Correct answer:

"I frankly don't see how this is the slam dunk that everyone is making it out to be. If the statements were Tj by a hair, then I can agree. However, TJ and it's not even close makes no sense to me."

Having said that, I'll take T.J. as the starter on my all-time Horn team with DJ and JM as back-ups. And I was going to post the same thing Vince Ford did: it looks like T.J. is back healthy. The Raptors have two really good pt guards.

Here's crossing my fingers on continued good health to T.J... and D.J too for that matter

TJ played very good defense while at Texas. He was the better athlete, he was a better court general, he was much quicker, and got to the basket easier. DJ has a better shot, and thats it. TJ was a once in a lifetime player to us because he really was greatness, not because we hadn't seen a truly great player in a Texas uniform. Checkout who he beat out for the player of the year award, that disproves that statement. Because he was better than those guys that you said usually go to North Carolina.

Texas Wahoo,

Show me exactly where I said winning the Naismith award was true greatness. I never said that. I said he was true greatness because he was. My point about winning the awards, was to disprove something that was said about TJ being so great to us, because he was the first truly great player in a Texas uniform. I said that wasn't true because he beat out those other great players, that went to those other schools the poster spoke of. And you do remember who he beat out don't you. But don't put words in my mouth, that was a different point.

Texas Wahoo,

How do you define "better floor general?" There is no way you can say that DJ is a better floor general than Ford if by what you are going off of is that he is a better scorer? That defeats the ENTIRE purpose of floor general. If you want to say DJ is a better scorer say that, but don't confuse it with floor general, because that he is most definitely not the better candidate.

Texas wahoo,

Are you saying he only beat out the 2 players at Kansas because they split votes, I don't think so. And Carmelo wasn't hurt by any rule change, try another excuse. Dewayne Wade was a beast of a player. So I don't get the point of your last post. Was it to try and discredit me saying he won the award over some truly great players. If so, you lost that debate before it started.

misirlou,

I can see your point in a certain way. But that is not why I hold him in high esteem. I hold him in high esteem because he was truly a great player.

wahoo,

I don't remember anybody saying that he was as good as Michael Jordan and other players on that level. We said he was better than DJ. Then the comment was made that we hold him in to high esteem because he was the first great player in a Texas uniform. I then said that isn't what matters to me, but he did win the award over some other great players. So is still a truly great player, regardless of what team he played for. Nobody on this thread said he was greater than the greats at UNC and UCLA. So I don't even know why you said that, except to pull back a lil bit.

misirlou,

I actually feel that way about Michael Jordan. People will be scared to say anbody is better. If Kobe wins 2 or 3 more rings, people will still be scared to love him, because they are so in love with Michael Jordan. I actually heard a cat from SI say the samething.

I can dig that. But I don't know if DJ would have took that 2003 Texas team as far. We can cleo about it all day, but it's just that, cleoing. But we'll get to see how far he takes this team.
