Ant Hill

Hahaha, you reminded me Rick when I was in HS on my pitiful team I played exactly that, LB and guard. Me, at maybe 165 lbs, playing guard! I can assure you I never pancaked anyone and one game I think I got killed - except that I’m still alive, sorta. My career at lB lasted a complete game and a half (or so). I think I got credit for one tackle by default. But all in all I did love HS.

I think the number convention can be traced back to two way players. Often, the linebackers were guards and centers. I think Nobis was the center on offense if I remember correctly.
Hence linebackers were usually wearing 50's and 60's.
Good insight Rick, thanks for pointing this out.

In all my years of following football, I have NEVER heard of a fan thinking a number was "goofy".

We have had some players that were goofy enough to have worn 25 1/2 if they could have. That said, I don't give a **** what any other schools or teams do. At THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS wearing that jersey is one of the highest honors a player can receive, some have deserved that honor, some may be questionable - then there's Brian Jones.

With that, I invite you to put me on "ignore"
Well, now you have. Some jersey numbers are universally recognized and accepted as cool, i.e. #s 1, 3, 7, 10, 11, 12, 20, 21, 22, 32, 33, 34, etc. Some numbers not so much, i.e. #s 15, 17, 27, 31, 37, 38, 43, etc. Some numbers are atrociously goofy and typically relegated to the scrubs that will never see the field. #60 is a goofy number. It's too bad such a great player and UT icon wore such a goofy number.

Derek Johnson rejected #60 when it was offered to him. He said he wanted to start his own legacy. He wore #11 while at Texas.

The last regular wearer of #60 was Brian Jones, I believe. The greatest #60 I ever saw live was Britt Hager. Doesn't he still have the record for total career tackles?
DJ was wise to reject #60, not even he could make it look cool. His PR agent probably helped him invent the "start my own legacy" excuse. I'm willing to wager the grand total of UT players requesting to wear #60 is exactly zero. It's a goofy number.

First, I don't think you ever played a sport that had you pick a jersey with a number on it. Agree with Sabre that there are no "Goofy" numbers. But congrats on being the first person in the world to place those two words together!

Players pick a number based on personal preference and within the numbers scheme that goes with the game such as football. Typically the preference comes from who was your football hero at the position you are hoping to play. AS SUCH a lot of kid's playing linebacker wore #60 during the time NOBIS played.

Also, I will bet you a million dollars that every new linebacker recruit that showed up on UT campus (after Nobis graduated) wanted to wear #60. One of the reason's it was set aside until a player played 'well enough' to deserve it was because the coaches didn't know who they should let wear it.

I think YOU are a goofy number. {<;
I solemnly swear to protect and defend the #60 for Tommy & myself against all enemies; foreign and domestic.
However, I do recognize your OCD hatred of the #60, and since it is a mental illness recognized by both the AMA & APA, you are forgiven.

You would be very much wrong.

I'm sure that was the case in the 60s and maybe into the 70s, but news flash, that was 50+ years ago. If #60 is such a popular jersey number, please provide a list of premier college and/or NFL LBs that have donned the vaunted #60 over the past, oh let's say 25 years. I'm quite confident the list will be brief.
UT should retire #60 to spare anyone else from having to wear it. It's a goofy number.

Poor Doak Walker having to go through the mediocre life wearing a "goofy" number. Unquestionably the greatest run in Texas HS history (as so anointed by the great Bill Ellington) was performed by a kid wearing a "goofy" number. Viper, do you think the people in Garland thought Gordon or his number was "goofy"?

You're not making "conversation", you are showing your overwhelming ignorance, the fact that you are not now and never have been a student of the game, and my best guess is either an Aggie, State Penn or Colorado fan, as those are the only fans I have run into with such great insight.

I believe that DJ did wear # 60 in at least one game, perhaps the 2005 Rose Bowl against Michigan.

Tommy Nobis was the embodiment of the core of Darrell Royal football and loyalty. There are other jerseys which should probably be retired, but NONE more deserving than #60.
IMHO the fact that # 60 has not been retired brings more attention to Tommy Nobis – one of the greatest Longhorns in our glorious history – then would be the case if the number had been retired. Certainly in recent years, only a handful of players have been given the opportunity to wear number 60, and only (I believe) for one game. Didn’t Breckyn Hager wear it for a game?

SN,

I agree, but he can't be so dumb as to not understand that some things in life are not messed with. The first two rules of life:

1) Know who you're ******* with before you **** with em

2) Know the things you can and the things you canNOT joke about.

When it comes to jersey numbers, any kid that puts on any number for the Burnt Orange and white is near sacred. If they are going to play for or be a part of a team bringing honor to The University of Texas, I take serious exception to some clown trying to make it less than it is.

Hook Em

Far from ignorant, I'm quite the expert on my own opinion. That's what I'm doing here, sharing my opinion. IMO, #60 is a goofy jersey number. You continue to confuse my comments about jersey #60 with somehow disparaging the career and contributions of Tommy Nobis. That is not the case.
It's okay to disagree Sabre, no need to sling insults.

Duke,

The University did indeed "retire" #60, as well as 22, 10, 34 (although Ricky wore "goofy #37" a couple of times, 12, & 20.

Unlike other schools (SMU), the jerseys continue to be used. Never figured that one out even though I got a 45 minute explanation from Deloss

Sorry to have to correct you again sir, but I stated #37 was "not so much" as in, meh, not great, but not horrible. #60 is goofy.

It might be said that disparaging a number that is revered and important to the Longhorns history was the first insult slung.

Well,I might as well get my 2 cents in here. #60 should be a revered number to all longhorn fans(especially old folks). Just like # 20 and 34 and 16.

I'm sure you are also an expert on your own a-hole. Go back & check your 1st few posts on the topic. Your are NOT expressing it as "IMO", rather you are expressing what you consider factual as such.
So, I revert to MY original opinion that "you are a goofy number."

LOL. So on an internet bulletin board site, you need an "IMO" disclaimer for you to understand it's someone's opinion? That's as goofy as the #60 on a football jersey. IMO, that is.

I was playing pee wee 6 man football when gale sayers was a rookie. Someone said his # should have been in the 20s, #40 was for DBs. That didn't make sense either

The kid that said that was ten years old

And as such, I maintain my assertion that YOU are a goofy number.
