'The problem with A&M is that it thinks it's a really big-time, elite program, but it hasn't really done enough on a consistent basis to actually be a big-time, elite program. It sort of falls into the UCLA/Michigan State category of having all the tools, but suffers from being the little brother everyone likes to pat on the head and isn't taken seriously.'

Dare I say, poooooor Aggy!?

I'm honestly not sure Michigan State and UCLA deserve to be in the same category as A&M. I realize they are talking purely about football, but UCLA and State's men's athletics programs carry some clout whereas A&M really hasn't done much when looking at the big picture.

Overall, UCLA's and MSU's athletics programs are far superior to aTm, but this is just about football. I think they're comparable: Tier 2 programs, just above the Purdues, Stanfords & Oklahoma States, but well below USC, tOSU & UT.

Does Notre Dame's 0 conference championships in football take away from their program? How about Penn State? They do not have many either.

I think the comparison mentioned by some posters really was meant to focus on Men's sports. Since the Directors Cup includes women's sports (where A&M gets most of its points), those rankings are not really relevant here.

I truly hope that bob ag is either one of you with an alias or a Jr. High child. Because either way, that was hilarious. Even aggy fans don't believe they are elite. Flash in the pans once in awhile or prolifically cheating for a decade, their only great decade. That about sums it up, bob.

A&M's athletic program has no business being mentioned in the same breath as UCLA. UCLA was the first NCAA school to hit 100 national championships.

Even if we are talking only football, I don't think they are in the same league. UCLA is clearly second to USC in football, but has had some legitimate tradition since WWII. They've had some really good players go through there and were very close to breaking through to a championship under Toledo. IMO, UCLA is a program that just needs the right coach to really break through, even with Carroll across town.

A&M will never be big nationally in the same way. Doesn't matter who is in Austin or Norman, the only way A&M could sniff a national title is if they bring FedEx back and pay even more than before. There isn't any way they are getting enough athletes to their cow college to win a title otherwise.

My personal opinions:

When I read things in the national press like:

1. A&M ranked" #48 " out of
66 bcs schools.

2. Mike Sherman ranked " dead last " as a football coach.

3. " Division I coaches will think twice when A&M comes calling, after the raw deal Coach Fran received".

4. A&M ranked " #9 " in the Big12.

5. Or the most devasting to me is when A&M is never mentioned at all in " any discussion of the half dozen top Big 12 teams ".

Somehow I get the impression that the national press thinks more of "Outhouse" than "Powerhouse" where A&M is concerned!

And unfortunately, now they are right on!

That will all change very soon as Byrne, Turgeon and Sherman are gone.

You know, most of the time I try to ignore miller58's posts, but it's really bugging me. I can't figure out if he is a self-hating aggy, or one of you in disguise.

In reply to:

"There are no words that can describe miller 58. He is hated by all. He is definitley not one of the good guys."

I suppose this is because he didn't drink the aggy kool-aid and he does not keep with the party line. Perhaps some of his free-thinking objectivity & honesty about that program is painful for the aggy faithful.

Dionysus- yea, Im an idiot. Its early.

rhorn-Paint it how want it but OU owns the big 12 conference.

Miller 58 is not an Aggie. That guy wants Fran to still be coaching.

Bob,

The very fact that you have to go to the mountaintop to tell the world your school is relevant in the discussions is Q.E.D. against your theorem.

Your team is not, and never will be, a powerhouse. Deal with it.
