Alumni Game 2-1-25

We've got a lot of good batters at catcher. For each game, 1 can be at DH, with the 3rd at 1B or on the pine.

Thanks for putting something together on the alumni game Chop.

Good stuff, I had my eye on Riojas, thought he might be able to contribute and extremely good news about Mercer, I was hopeful for even a slight return to his previous self. If i remember correctly, he showed untouchable form in the fall of 2023 prior to his injury and would have figured into the starting rotation. If he is fully back, we may have a much better staff than I was thinking.

The Chamberlain kid is a surprise, I don't think Borba will get beat out of the DH role unless Borba goes to 3B, Borba looked like he was getting real comfortable with college pitching near the end of last season. Chamberlain earned some situational at bats in my book though or a spot at DH on Tuesdays. If Borba goes to 3B, Chamberlain and Rodriguez could rotate in the DH role. I have a lot of possibilities running through my head right now, too much to type but centered around 1B, 3B, C and the DH. Assuming Winfield and Gas have the other two spots in the outfield locked down then look for any and all changes to be around these four positions as the coaches play with the pieces to find the strongest combinations.

This team has the makings to surprise a lot of folks in the SEC this year. This isn't going to be a rebuilding year.

Yep.

Chamberlin was a pleasant surprise. Dude can swing a bat.

Same with Winfield--we see why he's penciled in to start in the OF.

Riojas meets and exceeds the lofty press and scouting reports preceding him. This dude is one stud pitcher.

Everybody knew Mercer was a star before his injury. Looks like he's back in form.

Oliver Service showed some good defensive catching and some not-so-good defensive catching. (so did Galvan last year...) He's one I really hope we develop and do NOT cut. Massive upside at bat. Per the unverified eyeball test--his bat swing looks a lot faster than our average player. A very athletic catcher. We've got catchers dropping out of our pockets this year, so Service is probably still a developmental guy again this year. But, this year, he may catch some mid-week games or some late innings when we have a big lead. We need to develop this guy and keep him on the 40 Acres.

Farmer looked good out there. He would start in a normal year. We're loaded with good OF bats this year, as we should be. He'll get a fair amount of playing time.

Was at the game yesterday and the one thing for sure is the pitching staff is different...in a very good way. They were big, looked intimidating and hit their spots. I didn't recognize most of the names, but this staff did not look the same as what we have had the last couple years.

The infield looks like a bunch of pros with Flores at short and Schuesler now at 1st and two newer guys at 2nd and 3rd they looked really solid.

Didn't get much of a feel for the outfield, but man this team looks good.

Navarre throws a long looping curve ball.
I'm not exaggerating here. Any longer or more loopy and it would look like American Legion ball. He does land it with a fairly high degree of accuracy. So this weird looking beast that is his curve ball may be a ++ pitch.

Volantis is a strikeout pitching machine. He'll be seen a lot on the mound this year. Maybe a Sunday starter? Or better???

Rerick is a big ol boy from N. Dakota. He throws really fast, but he may need some work on his control.

Some visuals:

Extra base RBI hit with a play at the plate. Really nice work at the plate by Catcher Oliver Service.

That was McCreery on the mound.

"On the mound, freshman Dylan Volantis set the tone from the first pitch. Volantis pitched three innings and held the Alumni to one unearned run on just two hits.

Junior right-handed Ruger Riojas followed with three dominant frames, highlighted by a strikeout of Hamilton.

Right-handers Aiden Moffett, Jason Flores and Drew Rerick teamed up to toss the final three innings. The trio of arms limited the star-studded Alumni lineup to only one hit the rest of the way."

(they forgot to mention Rerick's walks, but ok. He throws very fast.)

"In the second inning, Chamberlain crushed a two-run 404-foot blast to put the varsity team ahead, 2-1. Chamberlain's laser left the bat at 109 mph, sending the more than 5,000 fans onto their feet."

"Texas freshman catcher Cole Chamberlain won the game's MVP after hitting a two-run home run in the second inning. Freshman infielder Adrian Rodriguez also hit a two-run home run, with his coming in the fifth inning."

Riojas is pitching at 1:13 -- 1:30.

That big dude on the mound getting shelled is Rerick.

Chamberlain's big shot is at 0:24

Volantis is #99--handling the first 3 innings very well.

Rodriguez HR is at 1:24

Oliver Service's good play at the plate starts at 1:42

Hey, we made the baseball X feed. That's my daughter in black and I'm right behind her. Mrs Vol Horn is blocked by my daughters arm.

Agree on Oliver Service, definitely want this kid to stay here till he gets drafted, i think he's going to be a great player for Texas.
