38%

I believe we had a revolution over FAR less of a tax burden. Granted, much of that could be attributed to the lack of representation that the colonies had at the time.

I think an argument can be made that the amount of taxation relative to the amount of representation is still skewed. As the poster noted above, how much of our tax money is being spent on past spending - which occurred before many of us had any say-so in the makeup of the govt? Add to that the social security taxes that, I know, I will not receive when I retire AND the massive social programs that are doing nothing but placing the lower class in a neverending cycle of poverty....

I know we need the military, police, roads, schools, etc... However, I can think of large chunks of the federal and state budgets that I wouldn't mind seeing cut.

38% of what the average American earns is a fortune by historical standards and is more than the average human earns now. We must seriously consider the possibility that we have become quite spoiled in terms of the services and support we expect from our government. Otherwise, most people on the planet live in countries with GDPs that are too low to pay for all the government help people deserve, even with 100% GDP committed to paying for them. This despite centuries of increasing productivity. Apparently only in the latter 20th century did a select few countries start to produce enough to meet people's natural rights.

The wealth spent by American government per capita (all levels) exceeds the average wealth humans create. Remember that next time someone claims the government is underfunded.

Stupid question - but are you all calculating your tax rate based on how much you pay as a percentage of your:

Total income,

or

Adjusted gross income

or

Taxable income?

And which one is considered the correct way to calculate it?
