2025 Texas Rangers

Bradford and Leiter with another solid outing yesterday as Cody went 4 innings and Jack went three. They combine to give up just two runs (both charged to Bradford) as the Rangers split squad beats San Diego. Both have spring ERA's in the two's and both have made strong cases to be significant pieces this season.

Leiter, Church and that other young guy are throwing flames now. It would be great to have that bull-pen stacked with 98-99 MPH arms with sliders.

I'm very excited about the year, but the Dodgers spending has really soured me on the game overall.

First,∙the Yankees need to be included in the above.

MLB's "tax" program is to blame. LAD and NYY did what the system allowed them to. The cap should be a hard cap. Increase it to a number, adjust it as needed, but the top number is the top number (like the NFL).

The MLB Players union will not let the above happen, but don't blame the teams for maximizing what is allowed.

I get that. The Yankees have historically bought players. The old Kansas City Royals or whatever they were called were basically their farm team. They bought Babe Ruth. Charles O. Finley tried to sell off some players but Bowie Kuhn stopped him.

Hey, they say, don't hate the player, hate the game. But if you excel at it, then my view is, you are the game. They went all out for Ohtani knowing the upcoming Japanese players would probably want to be with him. So they give him this enormous contract on deferral. Does it count against the tax this year? I haven't looked that up.

I just don't like. Get off my lawn. :)

Agree, don't blame the player - the system is flawed.

Rain in Arizona washed out de Grom's first spring start. It will be interesting to see if he is on the bump today or if they restart the rotation and we don't see him until his next scheduled appearance. Right now ESPN has today's pitchers as tbd.

Tony Clark is already predicting (posturing) a work stoppage in baseball in 2027. While the current system is not good for the overall game, all of the owners are still making money and the players that make it to free agency become generationally rich. And who suffers from this monopoly game? Its the fans, particularly those that are old school and simply want to enjoy the game on a somewhat even playing field.

Here are a few facts for all of us Dodger haters (Mets and the Yanks are also guilty) which magnify the failure of the current system. The Dodgers forecasted tax payroll for 2025 is $392 million which is ONLY $152 million over the soft threshold. As a result their tax bill will be approximately $142 million. Thus the Dodgers tax bill will be higher than the total payrolls of 15 other teams. Absolutely crazy!

Does Ohtani's deferred salary count or only when paid?

My short answer is some portion of the deferred amount is not counting against the luxury tax level. I'm not knowledgeable on the rules behind baseball's determination of what's included/excluded for luxury tax purposes. My go to source is Spotrac and according to them Ohtani's AAV (average annual value) is $70 million, his cash for 2025 is $2 million, and his luxury tax amount for 2025 is $46 million. Assuming these are accurate the Dodgers are getting a partial break on the luxury tax hit, but are achieving significant cash savings on a current basis.

As a point of comparison Blake Snell's cash for 2025 is $64.8 million (largely due to a $52 million signing bonus), but for luxury tax purposes his contract only reflects $31.3 million (I'm assuming the signing bonus, for luxury tax purposes, is amortized over the length of the agreement.

As I said in an earlier post.......monopoly money.

de Grom and Langford make their spring debuts today. de Grom pitches two innings giving up no hits and with 3 k’s. Langford is 1-2 with a walk and a run scored. Nice debuts all around.

Very nice debut by de Grom. Also note - Higashioka was the catcher today, went 2-3 with an RBI. He's hitting .412 so far. Appears he was a good acquisition to split catching duties with Jonah.
