2024 Texas Rangers

4th of February - too quiet on the Jordan Montgomery signing. Hope the GM is close to wrapping up the deal - Rangers need him, and by all reports, he wants to be a member of the Rangers.

Not Rangers related but I see Houston signed Altuve to a big deal that makes him in all likelihood an Astro for life. But for the cheating scandal that he was probably one of the least culpable for, he would be a Derek Jeter/Big Papi/Adrian Beltre type player who during their last few seasons would have everyone respecting and liking them in spite of who he played for. Sadly for Altuve he wont get that same treatment as he winds down his career.

Anyone got intell on Montgomery contract status? I've seen nothing in the DMN or elsewhere recently about him.

Since the probability of Worster doing either of ^^^ is less than zero, the rest of us will have to settle for Bally (see the attachment).

We have enough Hornfans Ranger zealots in the Metroplex that we could go for a suite. Of course, it goes without saying that those of us who are retired and on a fixed income would join in the suite with only a nominal contribution - the folks who are still working obviously have more resources to apply to the suite rental. :)

Meanwhile, back at the ranch - Pitchers and Catchers report to Surprise next week. Is there a news flash waiting to happen regarding the signing of Montgomery? Sure hope so!

I think the Rangers had a number for Montgomery based on the Bally's deal and whatever that number is Scott Boras isnt going to like it. Then its a decision do they sign Montgomery for more knowing that in August he could be your number 4 or 5 starter (presuming the clear top 3 are Eovaldi, DeGrom and Scherzer and Mahle is probably your 4) and your paying him like your first/second starter. Or, do you suck it up and hope that Eovaldi and Gray are a strong enough top two and that Heaney, Dunning, and Bradford are solid enough to get you to July until the pitching reinforcements arrive. Monty's playoff run last year and the injury concerns around DeGrom and Scherzer in particular make this a really tough decision. If you know that DeGrom, Scherzer and Mahle are coming back fully healthy and strong that is one thing but you really don't and for all you know, 1, 2, or all 3 might not make it back at all this year or you might get limited use and they get injured again. Chris Young has a lot of unanswerables with this decision and Boras won't help with the money side of the equation.

Chances are one of DeGrom and Scherzer either will not be effective or will go down hurt again.

Davis is going to have to pay Montgomery.

Excellent insight, FWHORN. IMO, expecting all three to come back, avoid further injury, and be fully effective is probably too much to hope for. If two of them do so, you're probably beating the odds. So the remaining question for CY - is a contract for Jordan a good "insurance policy" to protect against not getting the big three back in mid-season? If one of those doesn't pan out, the Montgomery fits as #3; if two of them aren't ready to go, the Montgomery fits as #2. A big contract for a #2 is not a bad deal; if he were the #4, then the contract price may be too large. As you stated, not an easy decision for CY - but one that needs to be made pretty quickly.
And the corollary to that question, looking from the player's side - is there another team out there that can meet the number Boras has in mind? It's Spring Training time this week, and the other clubs have already made their Free Agent moves - does anyone have the flexibility remaining to take on another huge contract for a starting pitcher? Maybe Montgomery doesn't have a lot of other choices - and Boras might have to be flexible negotiating with the Rangers.

Article up on ESPN+ on Rangers not "resting on their laurels." It is behind a paywall so I haven't linked but it includes a quote from CY essentially saying he doesn't think there are many additions coming to the Rangers roster at this point though he will keep an open mind. Since the only real issue left is Montgomery that has to be pointed at Monty and at Boras. CY also goes on to talk about financial responsibility in light if the uncertainty of the tv deal in future seasons something that was only just resolved for 2024 and is a huge unknown going forward. Given that uncertainty, it's hard to see the Rangers getting to a number Boras will tell his client to accept but then again, I am beginning to wonder if there a market with Boras' preferred number. At this point, the best case might be Maybe a 1-year deal with Monty based on a known quantity of the 2024 tv money and if Scherzer, DeGrom and Mahle come back you aren't locked in to more than this season. Crunch time for this issue is just about here.

I like your line of thought here, FWHORN. A short-term (one- or two-Year deal) could be a good insurance policy for the team, and it would leave Jordan in a position to become a FA again while still fairly young and marketable. I agree with you - I'm not sure there's a long-term deal out there for Montgomery (from any team, not just the Rangers) at the price point Boras is seeking.

Monty or not, it looks like the Astros get back on top. Scherzer is pretty much done, deGrom hasn't had a 90 day continous active stretch since 2019. He's 36.

I still think deGrom should be a once a series closer. It's all you're getting out of him innings wise without watching him disappear after a few weeks. Letting Chapman go was a big mistake

This is what all in looks like in terms of the cost:

This is what we got in the post season. A good result:

Now, both are gone.

So we changed providers last week. Our ATT Uverse pkg. carried Ballys - Rangers last year.

Our Spectrum package does not show we will get Ballys in 2024.

Any of you get Spectrum? If so how did you get Ballys - Rangers in 2023?

Woo, I hope it works out for you. We switched to fubo for ranger games last year. Positive = ranger games (ballys) and pay $50 less per month than directv. Negative = switching channels is a damn chore. Football Saturdays can be frustrating. But if you're not switching channels every minute, it's the way to go

The injury bug has really hit the Rangers again this year with Jung now down a couple of weeks. At least it's only February and if there is a silver lining it's that the Rangers are dealing with these now and not in May. That isn't to say that the threat of more isn't real and this Texas lineup may look very different month to month if they keep losing players at the pace they are on.

Incidentally, I have given up on Montgomery. I understand the Rangers' thinking, I disagree with it, but I understand it. Spring training opener is less than a week away.

We have Spectrum with Bally (Channel 36/318) on the Spectrum system in Addison.

Thanks Viper, I tried those channels. Me / us poor souls out here close to the Red River dont get either Spectrum channel in McKinney like you rich folks in Addison!!

If this holds and I cannot view the WORLD SERIOUS CHAMPIONS TEXAS RANGERS in 2024 without channel ju-jistsu and extra cost, I'm gonna get Dr. Evil ANGRY!

WorsterMan, you could do as we discussed earlier in this thread - go rent a suite for us for the season. I'll be happy to contribute $5 per game toward the suite rental. :)
