2024 Texas Rangers

Per recent Evan Grant articles in DMN, I'm optimistic the Rangers will get Garcia and Montgomery signed. How soon?

They'll get it done with Garcia prior to the date for the arbitration hearing. Suspect Boras will drag out the Montgomery negotiations until just prior to the report date for Spring training (about a month from now).

Aroldis Chapman to the Pirates. I cannot say this surprises me as I always expected him to be priced out from the Rangers and at 10M plus, he got far beyond what the Rangers were willing to pay.

Chapman to Pirates, per reports

The 8th-inning heart attacks will have to come from some other arm in the pen.

Exactly. No way the Rangers would cough up that much for him. He definitely helped the Rangers this past season, but IMO he was never viewed as a long-term acquisition. There are better places to spend $10M a year.

Yes and at times you never knew which Chapman you were going to get.

^Gallo was once regarded as "can't-miss" - and the Rangers certainly gave him enough opportunity. It's a shame to see him fall short of the potential he was hyped to be.

Well, we're now about two weeks from pitchers and catchers reporting - and I haven't seen any reports of other teams trying to sign Montgomery. I'm thinking that the Rangers are deeply into negotiations with Boras. Hope we see some news quickly.

Rangers get their 7th/8th inning guy to pair with Sborz and set up for LeClerc.

David Robertson to Rangers, per reports

Interesting that they paid 10-11M when the talk all along has been not spending big numbers and they passed on Chapman for the same or maybe even a little less. Not sure what this means for Montgomery or if it means anything at all when it comes to what will happen on that front. Times is ticking down to spring training so we should hear something soon on that one way or the other.

FW, I think the Rangers just got tired of Chapman's inconsistency.

Finally, a vetran pitcher who doesn't sign while hurt.

Viper, you are right that Chapman was always a heart attack waiting to happen and that had to play into the decision. I suspect also that Bochy has a type and Robertson meets that fit (as does Montgomery so hopefully that is worth a few more dollars thrown at him to get it done).

The Rangers have almost done enough this offseason to set themselves up for a run but Montgomery is almost make or break for the first half of the season. Texas is getting huge reinforcements for the second half but we could all be holding our breath every fifth day (for either Bradford or Dunning) and hoping that there are no injuries to starters like last year so that the Rangers can hang with Houston and Seattle for the first 3-4 months particularly if Montgomery isnt on the roster.

Agree, FWHORN - but I think it goes further. Montgomery is a solid long-term part of the rotation, even when the walking wounded return. He certainly boosted the Rangers last season when they really needed the boost.

I don't see how Robertson is an upgrade over Chapman . At 39 his arm is living on borrowed time, too. Paid too much for too little

For inconsistencies, think about the bullpen before Chapman got here and how much better the pen was after his arrival.

Jankowski running it back

Travis Jankowski returning to Rangers

Still no resolution with Adolis and still crickets on Montgomery but everyone else in MLB apparently thinks he will be a Ranger. I swung by a Yankee fan site (and yes I had to shower afterwards) and they are convinced he wants to be a Ranger and that Boras is using other clubs to drive up the price for Rangers and not good faith efforts to have another club actually sign him.

Well, we're now about two weeks from Spring training. I have not seen any reports that link Montgomery to other teams, so I must assume the Rangers are in negotiations with Boras. Maybe we'll see an agreement this week. It would really help solidify the starting rotation.

How does it exclude some of the regional networks?
Evidently, Diamond Sports (Bally's Parent and the organization in bankruptcy) had at least three different regional contracts. One was for most of the teams, one for the Yankees, and one for Texas and Clevland (it is not clear if this was one contract or two separate identical contracts). The Yankees pulled out last season. The "Amazon" investment was for everyone other than Texas and Clevland.

DFW Sports radio saying that Seager will be back by opening day against the Cubs and given that is two months away this isnt panic time yet.

From reports, it looks like the Rangers will be stuck with Bally for 2024 for 85% or so of what Bally paid last year. Davis made enough money in 2023 that a 15% TV haircut is immaterial, so sign Montomery and get on with it.

You guys getting ready to lose to the Astro’s this year?

The Rangers in August may be incredibly different from the Rangers in April through July and the real question is will Texas be close enough to Houston and Seattle (don't sleep on the Mariners they will be very good this year) to take advantage of the major upgrades that will come when Scherzer, DeGrom and Mahle become available and the long relievers that have had to hold down starting roles can go back and firm up the bullpen. The Rangers still have an offense that can score but it is hard to believe they will do so in the historic fashion they did last year covering up a ton of pitching issues/injuries that otherwise should have kept Texas from doing anything. So that's a long way of saying yeah I think most Ranger fans are realistic that Houston starts with an advantage and it could be a long year. Still that won't take away any of what may be a several-year-lasting high that we all got last fall with that magical World Series championship run.:texasflag:
