2024 Recruiting - Football

We could spend a lifetime discussing the merits of 'stars'. Every year I'm reminded how much they really mean when we lose to a team full of 3* players...

My obligatory response is that stars matter regarding overall talent. Stars mean little when it comes to drive and heart and also coaching. At least 65% of first round draft choices have 4 or 5 stars coming out of high school while almost none have less than 3 stars. With a hundred thousand players to evaluate its easy to miss on a 3 star to rate higher, but once you go past that it's rare to make it. Josh Allen is ONE example of a totally overlooked player who is now in the NFL but he is not the norm. Many high star players flame out usually because of attitude and commitment.

At the college level winning is all about coaching and the right systems for the players that you do get. Georgia beating TCU by 58 is what you get with an elite coached team of 4 and 5 star players vs a good coached team of 3 stars. TCU had a few 4 and 5 stars too though.

While this is true, I never cease to be surprised by the number of players from D2, D3, and even jucos that are starting in the NFL. You see them almost every game. Another Josh Allen type example is Tyreek Hill, who his peers seem to think is the best player in the league. He started to Garden City community college, went to Oklahoma State, and finished apparently at West Alabama. While he might be except an exception, his story is really not that much of a rarity.

Of course you are right. There are roughly 250,000 graduating high school senior football players each year. Only about 350 players are graded as high star elite athletes. Of course it's highly likely there are 50+ of those 249,000+ other players who will end up getting drafted each year. The succes rate of high stars vs low/no stars is staggeringly higher but not a guarantee.

Over the last 10 years, no one is better at losing to inferior talent than Texas. Part of that was poor coaching, part was not holding players accountable and some was just luck. We havent had the fire really since Muschamp left. None of our coaches have that. Bo hollered at some folks but he doesnt inspire or instill fear/intimidation like Muschamp. Sark may have weeded out the player issue and I hope he does. I never want to hear a player was a problem. The coaches are paid big money to coach. If a player doesnt have the fire to win, then play the next man up and instill the fire to win!!

Pleasantly surprised that the Schobel kid is attending. That family has never had us on their Christmas card list. It is nice to see some exposure to Colorado County athletes particularly since his dad or uncle is the HC at Columbus.

How are the kolaches though? I smell an NIL deal waiting to happen.

Do they even sell kolaches?
Apparently not on the breakfast menu. 3 players in the NFL though.
