2024/25 Portal Transfers

LOL. Smu.... like other schools its size, will mostly fade into mediocrity within 5 years.
Cannot the freedom to change be accommodated by forcing a one year ‘sit out’. NCAA is capable of enforcing that and it satisfies player freedom issues. One open transfer immediate eligibility, then next one is a sit out. Limit 6 years to play 4. The usual injury exemptions remain in place.

Might help a little but the root problem will always be the huge differences in money and ability to pay. We've created an NFL system with no caps or limits.

Not that one. That one would prevent student athletes from transferring between the Fall and Spring semester, which is the most logical and convenient time for anybody not playing in a late Bowl Game or playoff game.
With so many bowls affecting so many players maybe extend the portal time between semesters a little

Sydir Mitchell entered the Portal. We can't afford any injuries to the d-line in the playoffs. And will need at least two maybe three d-line incoming portals for rotational depth. Hope Terry is the real deal. He and January will be called on a lot next year.

He announced. Hasnt filed the paper work yet.
This one has been slow stewing for a year so no surprise.

Also.... Some rumors of Blue eventually hitting the portal.

4 DL’s? Not good. On Blue I had the same thoughts while, for some reason, reading the write ups on Barron and the award he should have won. My thought is he (Blue) and Sark have had some real straight talk about the fumbles. He’s a talent I hate to lose, glad it’s not my call.

We'll find replacements
Blue would have hit the portal in the fall if Baxter and Clark had not gotten hurt.

Per OTF, two punters the staff is looking at right now are Purdue's Keelan Crimmins and Utah's Jack Bouwmeester.

Once in a blue moon. I'm concerned that an unregulated market will essentially result in a long-term royalty or oligarchy in college football - 12 to 15 teams with almost all of the good talent. Money now rules, it seems. Some schools might survive with occasional 3 stars or a few 4 stars who blossom late but they won't stick around. Within 10 years, we could have dominance every year by big money/huge fan base "helmet schools". Maybe I'll be wrong but I think we've opened the door to that possibility.
And I think it's kind of turned it into "NFL lite" in terms of transitioning the game from relational to transactional. Someone who can do both of those things will be king, and I don't necessarily think it will always be the blue bloods.

I think Cignetti at IU is a good example of this. No one considers IU a football power. But one year with:
1. A brash HC who can build relationships
2. A portal group of 35+
3. NIL promises galore
4. A weak SoS but no one cares if you only have 1 loss
... basically turned IU into a CFP team while everyone else blinked.

If anything, I think it REALLY forces teams to start accepting the new reality and trying to use a similar model.

North Carolina transfer OL Howard Sampson told IT today that several schools from Alabama to Michigan are reaching out, and Georgia has already offered.

He's most interested in hearing from Texas since he's originally from Humble High and says he and Kelvin Banks, Jr. are "like brothers."

We'll see how long Camelot lasts. I'm sure it will usher in a Golden Age.

The folks that choose the portal dates must either be as dumb as rocks, or
perhaps they desire to diminish the game.

They have either completely ignored the impact of the December window on the playoffs, or simply, they oddly believe that the ability of the players to make a change right before the playoffs — to have complete autonomy— is more important than the integrity of the game itself.

You have to wonder if anyone actually thought this through. You have teams that play their guts out to have a chance to play for a championship, and then because of the early portal window, those same teams can have their rosters devastated before they play, obviously compromising the significance of the playoffs, and compromising the game’s integrity.

Hard to believe.

Why is it hard to believe? They work for the NCAA which means they are too dumb to get a government job.

I recently compared the NIL to NFL free agency and my nephew who is an attorney in Austin corrected me. His fiancee is an attorney specializing in sports and entertainment. He said the process to become an approved agent for NFL has a strict licensing requirement and there are protocols that must be followed. He shared there is nothing of the sort for NIL currently and anyone can become “an agent” for NIL. He’s just gotten into it and says it’s the Wild Wild West with no guidelines on percentage for agents, etc.

Crazy times.

Good stuff.

Here’s a situation that might present an interesting test case. What would preclude a player in the portal now, from signing with his new team, and playing in a playoff game, this season?

My question is, if a school chose to use that player, what power would the NCAA have to disqualify that team if they used their new player, and won their playoff game. After all, it’s all about TV revenue. So would they disqualify a team if the networks wanted to see the ensuing contest?

As of now, there seem to be few of any enforceable rules.
