2023 Recruiting - WBB

Schaefers showing up in Mississippi tonight to support our All-American. Very nice that they did this considering she has already signed and Vic is busy trying to win a conference championship. My bet is either Madi or Gisella will be frosh of the year next season in Big12:

Congrats to Madison. This was the goal she mentioned in every interview I’ve seen her give this year. She had 26 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals in the 64-43 win. Named MVP.

 
I see that she's a wing. What are her chances of significant playing time next year? It will be her, Amina. Who else?

So, continuing in the vein of "stupid question" - Is your certainty based on need, or on her performance as a high schooler?

First of all @CreakyHorn my apologies if I came across rude... it was not my intention. I was coming from a place of excitement over the recruit, not judgement towards you. My certainty is an educated guess which is based on both her abilities and our need for her particular set of skills. She's got size, speed, athleticism, and is a more than capable three-level scorer (distance, mid-range, and at the rim). She has a college-ready body and can create for herself and others.

She's also a good ball handler and passer who can basically have the offense run through her when necessary. Those are all skills that transfer nicely to the next level and can be especially effective in Vic's dribble-drive offense.

Not only has she been successful in high school, but she's also spent the past two summers representing USA basketball as a member of the 16U and 17U teams.
Hoopgurlz has her ranked at #12 and previously had her quite a bit higher. All Star Girls Report has her at #4.

This is a big-time recruit. If she can play a lick of defense (without fouling) it'll be difficult to keep her off the floor.

While it's not an absolute indication of success at the collegiate level, those high school players who are selected for the USA junior teams are the elite of the elite. Players selected in the past include Celeste Taylor and Aaliyah Moore; let's hope Madison Booker brings it as a true freshman like those players did when they arrived at Texas.
 
Madison Booker was named the Gatorade Player of the Year (Mississippi) for the second time this morning. She also won the award in 2020-2021 as a sophomore. She will be the 2nd Longhorn on next year's roster to have won the award twice - Aaliyah won it as a junior and senior (Oklahoma).


The state’s 2020-21 Gatorade Player of the Year, the 6-foot-1 senior guard/forward had led the Mavericks to a 28-2 record and the 6A state championship game at the time of her selection. Booker averaged 20 points, 8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.1 blocks per game through 30 contests and was named Mississippi’s 6A Ms. Basketball. She is a McDonald’s High School All-American Game selection—the first girl from Mississippi to be selected since 2008—and she’s a member of the Nike Hoop Summit Team USA squad.

Somewhat encouraging segment during this interview with Vic yesterday. But nothing concrete. This interview raised hope in the optimists. Pessimists are wringing their hands over whether or not Sonya appears in various groups photos. Add poster warning us that there is "more to the story."

Exactly. Despite all Aston’s recruiting success as well as Vic’s, Booker is by far the most complete W/SF I can remember signing with Texas in a LONG time.

You are right and this one has exceptional perimeter skills... as in point forward type skills in a college-ready body.
 
She'll be replacing Shay (assuming she starts). How do she and Deyona work together? In what situations would she be down low? Mostly out on the perimeter, shooting 3's?

She has the game and body to be a major contributor right off the bat, but we also know how Vic is when it comes to freshmen. Hopefully she can come in and do all of the little things that he wants.

Celeste is versatile for sure.

I think Vic played her at SG when he had Joanne Allen-Taylor at PG, and at SF when he had JAT at SG and Lambert at PG; and Aston played her at SF because she had Joanne Allen-Taylor and Lashann Higgs at SG.

I always just considered those 3 guard lineups with Celeste guarding the 3 out of necessity. She could handle almost every 3 but when it comes to SF, I picture a slightly larger frame who can muscle a bit down in the paint based on the matchup with the defender. It's largely personal preference - what really matters is the coach recognizes where they can put a player to maximize their skillset.

Ideally your small forward is your strongest all-around player on the team... key word "all-around" in that they're a more than capable outside and inside scorer, defender, rebounder, passer, and ball handler. I can't remember the last time we had that situation. In fact, we've been pretty deficient at that position for a number of years if we're considering the aforementioned.

I think we may finally be getting that in Booker. We'll see how quickly she can adapt especially defensively. I'm optimistic but as @kurupt stated, passing Vic's test is not easy.
 
Just watched Booker in the scrimmage. She was one of the few on the floor trying to play within the framework of team play, and trying to let things come to her not overly anxious to get the ball and shoot. She did some very impressive things that you won't see in a box score... definitely ready for the next level. She reminds me of Tamika Catchings in a way.
