2023 Recruiting - WBB

Where’s Waldo (aka Vic)? Not sure if Laci Steele is a target but ProSkills is probably one of the top 2 DFW orgs and Breya plays for CalStars.

Here's my list of the 2023 recruits on Texas' radar. Feel free to add or subtract from my list because following high school girls' basketball recruiting is not an exact science.
  • Mikaylah Williams; 6'0" Guard, Louisianna (#1 ESPN)
  • Breya Cunningham; 6'4" Post, California (#4 ESPN)
  • Madison Booker; 6'1" Wing, Mississippi (#6 ESPN)
  • Sammie Wagner; 6'1" Wing, Texas (#17 ESPN)
  • Sayvia Sellers; 5'7" PG, Alaska (#30 ESPN)
  • Gisella Maul; 5'11" Guard, Texas (#45 ESPN)
To my knowledge, Sayvia Sellers has not been discussed as a 2023 recruit in this thread. Sayvia was recently named the Gatorade Alaska Girls Basketball Playaer of the Year. This season, she averaged 24 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 4.5 steals per game. She has offers from Utah, Washington State, Oklahoma, Arizona, Kentucky, Cal, Gonzaga, TCU, Tulsa, Washington, USC and Ohio State. I don't know if Texas has extended an offer to Sellers but she is followed by all three of our assistant coaches on social media. There seems to be mutual interest between Sellers and Texas, as Sellers has liked numerous Texas WBB messages over the past few days.

Although Alaska is a long distance from Texas, it's not unthinkable that a high school athlete from Alaska could choose Texas. Lydia Jacoby is from Seward Alaska and is a 2022 commit to the Tx Swimming and Diving team. She won the gold medal in the 100 meter breaststroke in the 2021 Olympics.
Sydney Carter started following Mikaylah on Instagram.

When’s the last time LA had the #1 player in the class? Wouldn’t think that happens very often. You know Mulkey has to be recruiting her hard wanting to keep the best player in the state, pulling her away would be nice.

Pulling a NJ girl would be tough but PG Hannah Hidalgo (1b) is right under Breya Cunningham (1a) on my wish list.

I already tabbed her nickname...Shorty. At 5'11, Gisella is the shortest player Vic has recruited in the last two cycles.

(Just kidding about the nickname.)

Please translate. Where was he and who might he be scouting?
From the tweet, looks like he was in Alabama. The twitter account belongs to the West Virginia Thunder coach. They're a fairly well known club but Vic also could've been looking at a player on the opposing team.

looks like he was seated next to Joni Taylor and Chelsea newton of A&M to his right and I believe that was Jhonnie Harris to his left
That flashed me back to that story he told about being refused entry to watch Russian players play because he was a man and they thought he was a pervert and then getting escorted by security into a room and stripped searched. Vic goes everywhere!

I don't watch high school basketball and know these recruits at all, other than reading the comments here. Will someone in the know give an equivalent of each 2023 pledge in terms of past Longhorn players? i.e. Player A will remind you of Celeste Taylor. Player B is another Brianna Taylor, etc....

I would say Maul's closest comparison would be to C. Taylor. Although not slow by any means, she doesn't appear to have the cat-like quickness and athleticism of Taylor but seems to be more skilled offensively.

After watching the videos…..there may be several players getting NIL from WBB. Harmon, Moore and others. I have a feeling she already knows how to monetize her position. She just might wind up being the face of Texas WBB.

I'm wanting a Rori Harmon shirt! While at the Big 12 tournament, there were Cyclone fans with Joens, Donarski, and Ryan shirts. I love Bridget Carleton and may just get her shirt.

I've tried to keep up with Texas high school basketball so am aware of Gisella. Player of the year in Texas. Obviously Vic sees her as a fit for his system and I am not going to question his judgement. That being said, I see that she's the 45th ranked player for 2023. An earlier post, I don't remember which thread, posited that until we start bringing in players in the top 10 (or 20?) we are going to struggle to be at the top. I don't follow high school basketball that closely so I would ask what does she bring that will take us to the next level?
