2023 Recruiting - Football

Not to be contrary, but that’s not what I see. The ball gets from his hand to the receiver (even if downfield) as fast as I’ve seen. He’s practically John Elway when he wants to be, and can just flick it with his wrist off balance for 30 yards when he wants to be Patrick Mahomes. The arm talent is insane.
I don't deny his arm strength and that he can make all the throws.
I am saying his throws are easier to catch because his throws are softer. Time and again I have seen QBs throw the ball so hard they go through the receivers hands. How many times did our receivers drop the ball yesterday? I can remember worthy dropping two coming back to the ball. Worthy needs to work on that. He has the weakest hands among the starters. once he does catch the ball he is electric. But he is overrated as a ball catcher.

PK 1 (with a shutout)
Akana and Venables 0
I figured this would bring you frothing at the mouth. I loved the shutout and was pissed Sark didnt keep the pedal on the gas. I remember Stoops pounding Mack back in early 2000's and still hate that. Sark was honorable and put lots of players in but they want to play too, not just run the clock. Wright got almost zero reps of quality but so be it.

On the shut out, blanking a team with no qb is not exactly what causes most people to puff out their chest. If the d continues performing then hats off to whomever is responsible. You love a loser like PK, I dont. He gets no pass for the worst d in UT history last year. Perhaps at the end of the year, you can congratulate him at yalls family reunion.

no matter how good or bad a coach is the players on the field have to play with heart and enthusiasm. To execute you have to have drive and enthusiasm and this is what we lacked last year in the second halves. It's kind of a mystery to me but we lacked heart last year. But I see a difference this year.
So the players need to take the blame also for the results.
We are getting to the point where we have quality backups if the starter is not playing well or with enthusiasm he can take the starters spot.

I am a firm believer when the 2nd team comes in they should play as if the game is tied. They need to try hard to score. This builds their psyche and a sense of gametime urgency and the opponent needs to stop them if they don't want the score to get out of hand.
Just the fact that we have our 2nd team in there is a concession to running up the score.
Every player needs to build sharpness, not to lay down on the field.

I totally disagree about Sark's philosophy on this.

I agree and I also see them being more physical this year then last...the DBs are sprinting to the ball carrier! PK or not the adjustments have been made. I'm not going to dwell on the past with the performance they have made the past couple of weeks.

The only thing that Sark did is not throw the ball. His ball carriers, Brooks and Blue, were running their tail off and I saw the line working it. To me, Sark was killing the clock which every coach does. Also, why not end the game as soon as possible to prevent unnecessary injuries. Just food for thought!

WOW!! It all seeemed to workout fot the win and get reps for many more players. Yes, we all would like to see more gas and we will when Sark is ready to gove more reigns to the younger players....guess he is not ready to do this, but will in time. I would have like to see Wright throwing some as well as Brooks and Blue running more and catching out of the backfield and see what B Thompson could do in slot or being a return man.....He is lightning!!! Babies arent born walking and ready for solid food. It is a slow, gradual process. All in the hands of coaches Sark trusts and I hope we can trust as well as learn to trust the ones Sark has trusted. I like SS!!! A few other coaches are still being transformed so maybe in time we will all like and trust them. Probably some did not trust DKR or Fred or MB but they developed winners. Patience and Trust!! I expect changes will come if / when they have not produced by their leadership.

So glad we all are supportive of this team! Wonder where we would be if QE had not been injured or if Card had not also been injured in the same game or if Card would have been 100% for games after Bama???

Maybe we all will attend the reunion!!!!

Thanks Poms and DCW for your supportive comments.

Why not throw the ball to see who can perform during gametime! Why not sharpen skills during a real game. If I were coach I would play to sharpen my players. That's my two cents.

I can see both sides to this argument. I remember Gilbert coming into the MNC not having thrown a pass all season. Or maybe only none that were in meaningful situations. Fortunately both our QB's have plenty of reps this year but Ewers is one roughing the passes from possibly being out for several weeks again. Wright needs to be prepared to lead the offense if we ever need him instead of just handing the ball off. I understand the sportsmanship aspect of it. We humiliated our opponent yesterday and another touchdown doesn't make a difference. I also see teams like Ohio state, Bama and ou ( in years past) putting up 60 and 70 points on other teams and no one complained a bit so there's no reason to think we would get hammered by the media for doing the same.

I actually do not have any issue if they did throw the ball or scored more points. I'm just sharing my thoughts on why Sark did what he did. I also don't believe one or two series is going to sharp Wright up. Example would be Milroe coming in last week for Young and then a whole week with first team to sharp up his game and he still looked like "poop" yesterday. Milroe is a much better athlete then Wright. I'm not arguing just sharing a few other ideas. Hook'em

I apologies to all this is a Recruiting thread and got distracted.

Regarding your first point, I would have loved to see the 2nd/3rd team horns lay a couple of more TD's on ou. Seeing 60+ to 0 would have pleased me.

Re: your second point. There is no doubt that ou missed their first team QB. We missed ours too for a number of games. However, the two teams that outscored us seemed to applaud their defense "holding" our offense sufficiently to win.
Ou did have a QB, he was their second string QB, just like Card was ours. We make no excuses for losing two games when he took most of the snaps.
And in my opinion we should not slight the play of our D for mud holing ou's offense because their 2nd team QB had to play. We SHUT THEM OUT. Skunked them.
No one expected our D to skunk ou. Certainly not the Vegas oddsmakers who had the horns favored by 5 or 10 points, depending on the day you made the bet.
I'm not saying our D is the 1985 Chicago Bears, but they played well, tough, and shut the land thieves out. A shut out is pretty dang good, even when a second the second string QB is playing, imo.

Very good points made by dukesteer (this is a recruiting board but it's been turned into 'on the field board or in the stands board) Not much regarding recruiting. X misn Texas, so true!, Horns deserve the acknowledgement of big win, Carryhorn also hit the nail dead center with comments regarding Card's play in 3 + games with physical issues as well as comments regarding D's performance....all of theis points to successin Horn's return to respect nationally but we all need to appplaud these efforts without being so critical!!

These great edge players don’t get enough love from sports writers in HS. Nor are there many off them. There wasn’t even a recognized ‘position’ until about 3 years ago. Not DL, not LB. Probably the single biggest difference maker if you have a great one. Think Ted Hendricks. Fast first step, good footwork, several different evasive moves. No DT, at 300#, has a chance to stay in front of this guy. Only offense to negate impact is misdirection, jet sweep, screen. All medicines cause more problems than solved. Give me a mad-*** Billy Walton and keep your fat-*** Nolens. One wild *** running around in the backfield is money!

Per IT, CB Malik Muhammad of Dallas South Oak Cliff is "likely" to be in Austin this weekend.

QB Arch Manning and other commitments will be in town as well.
