2022 Recruiting - Football

Big time CB from GP North Shore - already been offered by Saban -- been publicly pining for an offer from us - now he has it -- potentially a 5-star

No 5 Stars either? Something is rotten in Denmark.

I tend to agree. But there is time for it to change - as new film from this season comes in. IMO, the single biggest factor is that the local/regional experts need to forcefully argue for the Texas kids in their meetings. Also, remember they did not make Tyler Owens a 5-star (he was not close to 5-star status in their original ratings) until their very last update for that that class, after his extreme measurables and track dominance were known by all.

Yeah, probably too early. But if you get a chance find Bijan's freshman season on youtube, watch it. His talent is obvious.

But why have journalist's lobby for Texas high school players? I am sure Herman knows who the good ones are and he will get those who are a fit in the UT program.

Yeah, Tyler was a 3 Star when Herman found him. T'Vondre Sweat and Hookfin also, I believe. I never could quite understand why he took Kennedy Lewis although he had good size. Then Herman said he had run a 10.6 100M and Herman had timed him 4.4 in the 40 yard dash. Same with that linebacker from Florida, but now he is getting compliments as a freshman. Oh, and Van Fillinger, still a 3 Star. What?

Because that is what 247 is. A collection of guys who follow high schooler players closely. (that sounds pretty funny, doesn't it?). They have different guys covering diff states and regions. It's a little like baseball team scouting departments - some of the scouts are better than others. And there are regional and national guys, and cross-checkers, and so on. Then they get together and collectively make these player ratings. I think they limit the amount of 5-stars every year to the number of first round draft picks. And, sure, every year there are a handful of no-doubt, 5-stars upon whom all agree. But what about the rest of them? How many high school seniors are there playing football every season? (I know there is over 1M total players every season). It's an imperfect science for certain, just like the NFL draft itself (look at all of those misses, by the real pros). And, truthfully, I am not sure how we could expect much more than what we get. There is only so much money in that business model, and it gets spread around pretty far (think of the travel expenses alone). Lastly, I would argue on behalf of 247 that at least they have a uniform methodology. This cannot be said about all of them.

Speaking of Tyler Owens
