2022 Recruiting - Football

Since I am rarely right on much of anything these days, I would not be surprised if the scholarship juggling brainiacs in the athletic dept come up with a couple more. I have often wondered who is responsible for doing that work.

The numbers always end up short of 85. Usually due to players no longer on the team and not reported. For example I have conflicting reports that OL Tyler Johnson’s status. My view is that we always have more room for what we want.

Swoggler,

You analysis is pretty consistent with what I have found from, as you mentioned, limited information and lack of a single, comprehensive source. I would add only the following:

I have read in multiple places that 7 is the max number that can be taken over 25 for covid/transfer portals. I have also read in one place that they were discussing allowing a couple more, but I have not found confirmation of this. Sark making the press conference statement in November that they were looking at 34-36 was odd and seemingly off base, unless they approved the "couple more" they were discussing, or Sark believed they would approve it.

I worked through the numbers a few weeks ago and including CT and JW leaving and without any incoming, we appeared to have 28 available scholarships to give. There was some subjectivity to the process as not all the UT portal entrants had found destinations, but I assumed they would leave and change their minds. I don't remember who they were now, but there we a couple of others that I wasn't sure would/could return because of injury/grade rumors. I did not count them gone since there were no announcements, no portal entry and only rumor.

Through the years, I have noticed that even pretty brutal coaches (like Saban and Meyer) don't like to run off their young players who have not yet had the chance to develop a little unless they are trouble makers and/or are not buying into the system. They just can't tell who will work out and who won't that early, and to some degree, I'm sure they want to feel like they honored their commitment to the player and gave them a fair shot.

Sark, nice guy in person or not, seems to be of the mold of those types of coaches in this area who will run off players if he thinks he can upgrade. I don't think we have seen a football coach with this approach at UT, maybe ever. They would run off trouble, but not good, hard-working kids who were dedicated to the program but just were not as good as the kid being recruited. The portal has accentuated this issue and I think it will continue to accelerate the visibility of the approach. (It's going to become a cruel world for college athletes to offset the NIL money and loyalty free new world.) However, if Sark is looking to turn over 40% of the roster, he can't help but have to dive into that youth pretty seriously (unless he runs off all his starters which he obviously isn't going to do). I think it is going to cut deep into the bone, have to cut deep into the bone if these portal possibilities play out.

I'm very disappointed in the Dunlap deal, or not getting some OL help from the portal. Incoming OL frosh maybe better than poor talent on the roster, but they are not "good". We needed to seriously upgrade the OL this year to be able to keep selling the future. I just don't see recruiting success next year if we have another bad season. Herman sold the dream for a few cycles, but eventually the kids stopped believing. Sark needs the OL to be very, very solid, if not good in 2022. SMH. Maybe he knows of another coming to the portal, Hoping.

I hear it is more that we didn't pursue Dunlap. I have also heard they are all in on Devon Campbell (although he is an IOL) and don't want to do anything to dissuade him from coming.

you know, even with ags getting 6 of the top 20 players in the ountry in their class... alabama still had the higher avg player rating?

aggy 94.61
bama 95.19

that's funny to me. they still didn't totally win the recruiting war this year.

I believe you get 3 transfer options max. This would be his 3rd.
Too much baggage here. A physical freak but something amiss between the ears.

Seems Mr. McCoy also was a victim of the Mack Brown curse, which oddly enough seems to have continued on despite MB leaving UT.

I don’t know about everyone else but I’m on hourly alert waiting to learn anything about Mathis, Sanders and Williams. Any of the three would be a huge get. All three could be a bridge to something special this fall.

I’m in constant refresh mode too .. let’s get all 3
