2021 Transfer Season

But he's got 12 transfer out this year:

Engstler and Cardoso were huge losses. They may be getting some good players in but in my opinion, they’re still significantly in the red.

My goodness, Kardoso and Boston together will be very tough to stop
YES! I don't see anyone stopping SC. I'm interested in seeing how Dawn plays them. Again, it's like how and who do you stop?!?! They have soooo many weapons. I have a feeling that our former Longhorn(Destiny Littleton) is going to be one of SC's many X-Factors.

My goodness, I saw all these Baylor fans happy about the hire but the Baylor players don't seem to be in support. I think that assistant coach hire was the wrong move for so many reasons and it looks to be causing some damage to the team

My Baylor friends in my Sunday school class at our Baptist church are getting testy. Anxiety has set in for them and resulted in a real challenge of our biblical principles. Good. They need some humble pie after what seems likes decades of gloating. Wait. It HAS been decades since they jumped on top. I look forward to the fall and changing dynamics on basketball court AND in my church.

So... aside from the realy good pickup we made by getting Matharu, thus far there has been no blockbuster transfer to land on our roster via the portal. There's still a little over a month to go, but I'm thinking we won't be picking up anyone else it's such a player -- more specifically a "big."
That said, I don't know about the rest of you, but I am excited about the thought of having all the new players on the floor with Jo, Audrey, and Lauren as the veterans. It will be fun to watch and see what Vic, Dionnah, and the rest of the staff (whomever that ends up being) does with all the young talent.

Agreed but as of now I think our success depends on our freshman especially Moore. She will be out until August so I believe it's going to take some time for her to get adjusted and back in shape. Besides the Juco player and Ebo we really have no depth at the position. I'm hoping some players will enter once they get back to summer workouts in the next week and we add to our roster. I'm still excited nonetheless but really would like to add some depth and a big transfer before the season.

Partially agree. Vic wants to build a program that is perennially considered Top 10. But he will do it his way, not the conventional way. His first year team finished 17th in the final Coaches Poll, an incredible accomplishment thanks to the Elite 8 performance, so the program is already on that trajectory. No other 10-loss team finished as high.

I agree that a healthy Moore is a very important cog, but a healthy Gaston is just as important. (I'm not certain we can consider Deyona a freshman, but she certainly is from an eligibility standpoint.) Throw in Sikuzani and you have a front court nucleus that can compete at the highest level based on their mobility and hard-nosed attitude. I admit I'm reaching a bit with Femme because I have not seen her play, but I trust Vic's instincts that she is his type of post presence.

Let's face it, we won't find a prototypical, Jessika Carter-type post in the transfer portal this off season who is proficient on both ends. But we don't need one with the aforementioned players that are excellent program fits and match the style of play that Vic is trying to instill from one to fifteen.

Our biggest need is definitely at the 5.

Lots of good comments. I have resigned myself to living with the current roster......and IF I am surprised with a new “big” later, it will send me into euphoria. The roster is good enough to compete at the highest level if everyone stays healthy. To win at the highest level, still need that two way aircraft carrier at the five. Perhaps that player is one or two years away. Or not.

Are most of y'all writing off Precious? I don't know. I mean, I understand she is a project but it seems like she's in it for the long haul and willing to work hard (I guess there's still time for that to change though). I'm just curious to see what Coach can do with her. She may surprise us. :e-thinking:

If she wasn't in Vic's short term plans, she would have transferred to UTSA

I have tempered expectations for Precious in the near term - same with Femme. Femme has faced a higher level of competition but nothing near Power 5. I really liked a few of the things she did in the single game I got to see of her but she was rotated in/out frequently so she, like Precious, is going to need time to really get to the conditioning level needed. Lauren is going to get a lot of minutes early and will need whomever is playing the 4 (Deyona/Aaliyah) to really get up and down the floor because that's not her strong suit - from what I've seen, both can do that extremely well so I'm not as concerned on that front. If Lauren stays out of foul trouble, hopefully Femme and possibly Precious can contribute when she needs a breather.

Funny that mention Precious, because I was telling a friend that Vic wouldn't have kept her around just for keepsake. Apparently he feels she can be developed into some role of contribution. She had the best energy and attitude on the sidelines and I would love to see her be successful.

I completely forgot about Gaston:thumbup:

There typically is a HUGE improvement in a player’s second year. Even though Gaston didn’t get a full year, she know knows what it takes. For sure she has the talent and skills. It’ll be interesting to see if Moore or Gaston will have the 4 spot. I can see them playing the 4 and 5 together.

The problem is that they're both coming off of injury/surgeries so we don't know if and when they'll be ready to play.

After the first game in November that allowed the entire roster to get minutes (except the two injured players), I commented that there would be turnover with two of the healthy Aston recruits that did not possess the required quickness and mobility to operate in Vic's full-court style of play. They both would be productive players in a different, less physically demanding system.

This has nothing to do with how good a person someone is, or how much dedication they have to the game, or how much loyalty they have to Texas. It's purely physical athleticism. (Which, incidentally, is why I doubted Nancy Mulkey would be recruited.)

They are both still on the team. Refashioning an entire roster takes time and does not occur in a single season.

And it could be that those two are more of a fit for Vic than you/we thought. Vic's style of play is one that requires a total buy-in and a dedication to extremely hard work. Apparently these players possess those qualities or they wouldn't still be there, we just haven't had the privilege of seeing it... yet. Again, really looking forward to seeing the young'uns play and develop.

I should have also mentioned off-the-court considerations that determine roster makeup in the short term, but certainly not the mid-term or long-term direction of the program.

The game has never been so short-term oriented. I took great pride in seeing the shy raw big from Philadelphia that developed into a really nice player her junior/senior year. Aston and staff did a nice job with her. I am still for those type of personalities/players......maybe we have a few of those now plus coming in.

What makes this interesting is that Stanford was always a bit snooty (especially in volleyball) that they usually don't take transfers because most kids can't meet the academic requirements to qualify to transfer in.

Interesting observation. The academics at Northwestern are nothing to sneeze at, so maybe that factors into the equation?

Coach McEntire began to follow so I assume Texas has interest. Going to be a huge get for any team. She would thrive under Vic's style of play but we are guard heavy so it's going to be interesting to see how much we pursue.
