2021 Recruiting - Football

A must have and really Texas's to lose. He wants to block for Bijan again.

We definitely need the beef on both sides of the ball. Always. Every year. Ohio State has 3/4 of their defensive line verbaled for 2021. All three are in the ESPN top 100 including the number one ranked player.

Inside Texas on Tarik Black

Black played three seasons for the Wolverines with his best being his most recent. He hauled in 25 catches for 323 yards and one score. In his first two seasons in Ann Arbor, Black played in only nine games due to injury.

How he fits at Texas: Black is a big, talented outside receiver from Connecticut that was long regarded as the most promising talent in the Michigan wide receiver room until multiple injuries derailed his career. He’s big and has some speed, the latter point is still there after some injuries and he’s now 6-foot-3, 215 pounds with one season of eligibility remaining. At Michigan he fell behind Nico Collins and Ronnie Bell on the wide receiver pecking order in an offense that also regularly targets tight ends, so he’s moving on for a fresh opportunity. For Texas he could fit into a lot of roles and was in the regular rotation at a few different spots last year in Michigan’s new RPO spread offense. His most obvious fit is outside where he knows how to use his size to get to spots on slants and inside routes. He still has some deep ball threat to his game but he’s closer to being a possession receiver at this point. He’ll likely fit in either as a veteran opposite Brennan Eagles that can be in the right places or a back-up in the X that allows a younger player like Marcus Washington to compete for the second outside receiver starting job. With another year removed from his injuries, Black could be a punisher for teams that want to try and bracket Eagles. – Ian Boyd

Coach says: Strengths – Well-built and good height. Body has matured in a college strength and conditioning program. Good lower body explosiveness and first steps are decisive and quick off the line. Acceleration and straight-line speed appear about average. I am guessing +/- 4.6. Has a lot of usage as the field/Z but some boundary/X as well. Has a plan and executes against press coverage. Shows great change of direction and his old, unofficial shuttle times under 4 seconds would confirm this. Has very good lower body explosiveness and this is evident in his route running as he explodes out of his cuts. Not only a great route runner but a very good route seller. Has very nuanced movements to set up the defenders. Uses every bit of his frame against the defender. Available film shows soft hands and a natural catching motion away from his body. Always physical at the point of attack as a blocker and has above average highlights in that regard. Was an ESPN 300 player coming out of high school. Had a lot of athletic accolades at the high school level. Appears to be a good student as well and it’s fair to expect that he’s coming in as a well-spoken and mature upperclassman who can mentor the younger guys like Tre Watson did for the running back room.

Areas for Improvement / Concern – Frankly, he’s a question mark. Had one foot or the other broken in consecutive years and fell quickly down the depth chart that he stood poised to take over even as a freshman. Saw him get successfully harassed by smaller DBs at times. The physical traits are there which just don’t seem to have translated into real results at the college level. He’s a tale of “what could have been” for Michigan fans and it’s just not clear how much of this falls on the player, the QB play or the injuries.

How this affects Texas: UT needs a veteran wideout for the 2020 season. They need a guy that has played at a high level of D1 football and can bring a maturity to the wide receiver room. Frankly, Sam Ehlinger needs him. After LJ Humphrey and Devin Duvernay were Ehlinger’s go-to guys the last two seasons, the senior signal-caller needs a Tarik Black-type that can come in and stabilize a talented, yet relatively inexperienced WR corps. As of today, Black is quiet about his future plans, but we’ve heard from multiple sources that expect Texas to be right in the thick of things when he does ultimately enroll. Remember, it’s often difficult for a grad transfer to get accepted at UT, but Tom Herman has a penchant for finding those guys, like Calvin Anderson, Tre Watson, and Parker Braun. If Black can be a good percentage of what he used to be, this will help the UT passing attack. – Justin Wells

Wells and Nahlin are positive on Ash as a recruiter
...When you can get people to visit on their own dime from far away it's a positive early indicator. Jaylin Smith's remarks last week were encouraging, and I like hearing how he was straight up with Mukuba. That resonates with players and buys you time to truly evaluate. There's a time limit on this approach but you cross that bridge when you get there.

Calif DB Jaylin Smith working out with Chris Adimora - apparently we have a decent shot with Smith

Great news. I am surprised that Adimora has been so under the radar. He and Woodard (another below the radar guy) both showed out in the Alamo Bowl, even when they were not the principals in the play. Both showed great awareness, persistence and intelligence.

The LSU boards are claiming that the Brothers Brock have set up a visit there for the Texas game.

Seems like his top 3 are really Texas, USC, Oregon
And his SM has a lot of Duck stuff (and they do pay to keep guys in the West)
He looks better than Fatheree, although it seems like he mostly play OG in his film

This Arizona OT has already committed to Oregon

On Mukuba, Clemson thinks they have a good shot too
It's probably a good sign they like him as they seem to do very well with their player evals, especially defense

Makuba did a podcast with Mike Roach and he said he knows where he is going. The consensus now seems to be that he wants to go to Clemson.
But it looks like Clemson only has one spot for a S in this class and they are, of course, in on several of the top ranked safeties now. Plus, Dabo somewhat famously does not make accept a commitment until he has had the player on campus for a face-to-face. And who knows when he might be able to travel there?
So this one is up in the air for now

If you like podcasts, this one on Texas recruiting was pretty good

I had trouble embedding the link, but its on iTunes under "State of Recruiting"

New commit - a LB who can play in space (Aranda at Baylor really wanted him)
It's nice to have an LB coach again who actually puts some time into recruiting LBs

247 is doing another rankings update May 15th
Based on this recent 247 article, it looks like Blackwell will be moving on up
Stock up: 2021 linebacker prospects set for a rise
Morice Blackwell, Texas (35 OLB) – The thing that jumps off the film the most about Blackwell is his length and upside. He plays a lot of safety and he was extremely productive in the 2019 season but his body type and range are two of the traits that caught our attention in a rewatch of his film.

From the same article^, we are also pursuing these LBs as well

Andrew Jones, Louisiana (18 ILB) – ... Jones is an undersized linebacker but he’s an incredibly productive, active and athletic player in pads. Do yourself a favor and watch his film just for fun. Size is the only limiting factor for us.

Prince Kollie, Tennessee (33 OLB) – This is an East Tennessee kid playing very average competition but his film is outstanding. He makes plays on both sides of the ball in a lot of different ways and his physicality and natural strength is eye-catching. He’s seen his stock rise of late with college staffs too.

Jaydon Williams, Texas (49 OLB) – We love the twitch and explosiveness that Williams shows on film. He’s only been playing defense for a few games and he plays out of position on the edge so there is some unknown and some projection at play here, but the length and burst are undeniable. Williams recently named a top six with a decision coming in May.

Of these 3, Williams was probably an "either/or" with Blackwell -- the other 2 are still in play
And for some unknown reason, LSU is not on Jones (yet)

I was in small towns in Ohio and Michigan for most of my youth watching Ohio State, Pitt, Penn State, and Michigan. In my freshman year of HS, we moved to Houston, Tx and I could not wait to get there so I could watch the great SWC with Texas, Arkansas, and SMU as the head liners. What a disappointment when I arrived and started to read the Houston Chronicle because it was at this point that I discovered how bad the SWC was and how misinformed I was by reading the Michigan and Ohio press and watching those games on TV. Why this stupid story? The instate recruits read all kinds of negative things about Texas schools while the out of state kids get positive news. Hence, it is hard for local schools to recruit and easy for out of state schools to poach. Anyway, I ended up at Texas probably because of the great Earl Campbell. How the hell could I not go to the school that Earl attended?
