2021 Coaching Carousel

It's natural to assume you hire one "assistant" to replace a departing "assistant" coach. But, what I'm noticing now (Chris Beard and Mike White) is that they are hiring head coaches from mid-major programs to join their staffs as assistant coaches. Salaries for Texas assistant coaches can be higher than those of head coaches at lower level conferences.

While I don't admire a lot of things Kim Mulkey does, she did this years ago. It helps bring in a lot of coaching experience to your staff. Or, he could hire a head coach from a JUCO.

Regardless, it needs to be someone who fills the voids left by Johnnie's departure; whether that be post development, defense, recruiting, mentor, confidant, etc.

Part of the issue at OU was people felt Sherri hiring her son as an assistant was not a good look, especially considering all the experienced and qualified coaches there are to choose from.
OU is king of nepotism. I believe softball head coach Patty Gasso is trying to set up her son as her predecessor when that day comes.

But the coach is responsible for winning. They should have the latitude to hire whomever they sit fit to accomplish that objective because ultimately their job is on the line

I neither agree nor disagree with the outcry about the nepotism thing. I'm more of the opinion that each situation is its own situation. Ya know?..

I'm happy for her! She will turn that program completely around. I pray she doesn't take any coaches from the staff with her especially coach Lovato. I wonder how much of an impact this move will have on transfers. Mississippi state players to be specific
I was thinking the same thing..about the assistants but our assistants are pretty well paid and I wonder if Auburn would want to paid money like that with WBB

Auburn hired a coach who has never been a head coach before; doubt they are paying a Top 25 salary.

Doesn't sound like Dionnah is joining her at Auburn:

Supposedly Rice WBB HC Tina Langley was Auburn’s first choice, which makes sense given her experience as a HC and her ties to Alabama, but she turned down to job. Ecstatic that Harris is getting this opportunity. She has more than paid her dues coaching under Yow, Blair, and Vic. Lots of winning has taken place with her on the bench.

I wonder if that means Langley will take over Washington or Oklahoma. Is Jackson-Durrett still under consideration for Oklahoma. Unsurprisingly I’m sure much of their attention was given to the men’s position.

Latest from the OU WBB message board:
Take it for what it’s worth but I was told about 10 days ago that their target(s) were still playing (Read: Texas). Then I was told by a really good source yesterday that they are focused on Dionah. I bet this is wrapped up by Tuesday.

It would be tough to lose two assistants, but would wish them well.

Yep. But unfortunately it was inevitable. At this point I'm more worried about trying to keep the recruits/ players that are already signed to Texas in the fold more than what transfers Texas may be able to get. Especially if they do indeed have to replace both of their top assistance that are the post and guard coaches.

If the information stands true, then level up Lovato to Johnnie's position and salary and the impact of losing those two is minimized somewhat. Lovato is a hell of a coach and recruiter herself.

Elena is one of the best recruiters in the country. She needs to be a priority to keep around. Especially because she has ties to the state of Texas. She definitely needs to be promoted and if we were to lose another coach we need homerun hires. I trust Vic to make the best decision possible on any hiring aspect

Interesting that Langley decided to go to Washington. I think Oklahoma is a better job. With her off the board it seems even more likely that Oklahoma ends up with Dioniah. Rice is also a decent job with an advantage in academics.

I tried all weekend to get some info on the OU situation. I was told Cori was offered the job mid-week last week and turned it down. Langley was being undecisive. I agree with you, I would have taken OU. They have some talent. Washington will be more patient with her though. She may not want the spotlight of a job like OU.

Washington and Oklahoma are similar because neither have a natural recruiting base to recruit from. The difference being that Oklahoma boarders a state with a ton of quality talent and Washington doesn't.

Are you wanting me to believe that the female Mormon potato farmers in Idaho and/or the tree huggers in Oregon don't produce a plethora of basketball talent?

Thing that has me puzzled by OU is they have the money, fan base and talent to bring in a top notch coach and for some reason have put wbb on the backburner it appears.

I agree. In my opinion Oklahoma should've been able to attract a very good head coach from another school, not an assistant .

Personally, I would have called Wes Moore (NC State), who is from the DFW area. Of course, he's the wrong demographic at this point in time.
I don’t buy the “right demographic” argument (especially at OU) nor would he have considered OU with any genuine interest. NC State is arguably the best WBB school in a triangle/tobacco road area that has a great AAU presence stacked with talent and a program that is competing at the highest level. Why leave that to rebuild an OU program with no natural recruiting base and one that clearly has no interest in supporting WBB at the same level as NCST?

I agree about reaching out to Wes... he's a great coach! Probably wouldn't have been able to pull him away though.
