It's natural to assume you hire one "assistant" to replace a departing "assistant" coach. But, what I'm noticing now (Chris Beard and Mike White) is that they are hiring head coaches from mid-major programs to join their staffs as assistant coaches. Salaries for Texas assistant coaches can be higher than those of head coaches at lower level conferences.
While I don't admire a lot of things Kim Mulkey does, she did this years ago. It helps bring in a lot of coaching experience to your staff. Or, he could hire a head coach from a JUCO.
Regardless, it needs to be someone who fills the voids left by Johnnie's departure; whether that be post development, defense, recruiting, mentor, confidant, etc.
