2020 Recruiting - Football

I wonder if this is an indication of the coaching staff's thoughts on our chances with Braun or the other Grad transfer offensive linemen? I really wanted Braun. I think he could have been a difference maker inside for us next year. Do we have any idea how many slots we have left for this class?

I dont know how they look at it. Even though Willie is a JUCO he is not ready to play like the GTs and older JUCOs we are talking to. He will probably needs two years before he is ready to start. Whereas Braun/Proctor would be starters in 2019, otherwise we are not offering them. So its not really an apple to apple comparison. Which i guess means it makes more sense to look at Willie compared to our 2018 and 2019 OL recruits. At least that's how I see it.

I read something from Inside Texas where they suggest this is the equivalent of signing OL Andrew Coker, had he not decided to remain with TCU.

Something else Ive been looking at lately is the 2021 OLs. While the 2020s are pretty exciting and it already looks like we are going to land a great OL class, the 2021 OLs may be even more impressive. That class is really stacked and we are all over them.

I was thinking of it more from a numbers perspective, that if we knew we were going to get one or more of the grad transfers, we might not have had room for the JUCO.

Some EJ Holland of 247 --

" .... Like (Johnny) Wilson, many high profile national recruits are giving Texas a hard look. Just look at the new Top247 rankings. Of the Top 15 recruits in the country, Texas is firmly in the mix with four from out-of-state — linebackers Justin Flowe and Sav’ell Smalls, cornerback Kelee Ringo and tight end Darnell Washington. Of course, Texas is also right up there with in-state five-star Zachary Evans.

There are already some Texas Crystal Ball picks in for Ringo as UT is the only school he has visited twice during his recruitment. Don’t be surprised if Flowe gets some picks as well once he makes it to campus this spring. Both Smalls and Washington have stated they would like to visit Texas this offseason as well.

But it doesn’t just stop with the true cream of the crop. Texas hosted elite California running back Kendall Milton, who is ranked No. 22, over the weekend. Arizona running back Bijan Robinson checked in and No. 26 and plans to see Texas at some point in the next two months. The aforementioned Wilson, who is ranked No. 32, loves Texas and has the Longhorns in his final five.

Texas has already played host to Michigan offensive lineman Justin Rogers, Oklahoma defensive back Myles Slusher, Arizona defensive end Jason Harris, Tennessee offensive lineman Chris Morris and Oklahoma wide receiver Javian Hester. All are ranked inside the new Top247. The Longhorns are also in line to receive spring visits from guys like Arizona defensive back Lathan Ransom, Arizona linebacker Damian Sellers, Washington running back Sam Adams II, Louisiana defensive lineman Jacobian Guillory. Again, all are inside the new Top247.

By the way, Texas already holds a commitment from Missouri athlete Mookie Cooper, who is ranked No. 122. Herman has made it clear that he is going to find the best talent. Period. And he’s doing just that."
"...Louisiana defensive lineman Jacobian Guillory..."

If that guy executes well on the field, they'll have to start calling him 'Jacobin Guillotine.' Glad he's giving us a look.

Makes sense. I hope we still get a few of the GTs, especially Braun. I trust Hand and Herman not to offer some slouch--they've done their due diligence before making an offer to Willie and apparently like what they see. While our quality on OL was excellent for the 2019 recruiting cycle, our numbers are a few short. Willie helps.

Some quotes from DE Alfred Collins (Bastrop Cedar Creek) --

“Texas is still No. 1. I haven’t been down there in a while, but I plan to go back soon. I grew up a UT fan. I just like (Tom) Coach Herman and the school.”

“Coach Giles is open. He’ll listen to you. He’s a good coach. He’s a good dude. I like him.”

“ou (is Texas' main competition). They have good coaches. They are funny and fun to be around. They are good people. I like them.”

Very good player. Not someone we want to see going to ou.
Alfred Collins, Cedar Creek, Strong-Side Defensive End

Here is TFB on the DL targets

Defensive Line
Vernon Broughton (Cypress, TX)
Alfred Collins (Bastrop, TX)
Prince Dorbah (Highland Park, TX)
Princely Umanmielen (Manor, TX)
Alec Bryant (Pearland, TX)
Branard Wright (Dallas, TX)

To say this cycle’s defensive line talent is good would be a massive understatement. Texas is sitting in wonderful position with a good handful of the aforementioned names. In person, Vernon Broughton is one of the most physically intimidating prospects this cycle has to offer. Texas is sitting out front for Alfred Collins as well. Texas has gotten Dorbah and Umanmielen on campus quite frequently so far, however they will have to fight off Oklahoma and other regional schools for either of their services. Dallas Carter’s Branard Wright is one of the few true defensive tackles in this class, it appears that LSU is the clear leader for him at the moment, though he was on campus for the Junior Day last weekend.

Here is TFB on the S targets

Safeties
Chris Thompson (Duncanville, TX)
Xavion Alford (Shadow Creek, TX)
Bryson Washington (Houston, TX)
Darius Snow (Hebron, TX)
Jerrin Thompson (Lufkin, TX)
Lathan Ransom (Tucson, AZ)

It’s going to be an exciting cycle at the safety position this year. Chris Thompson is one of the best safeties in the country and has very high interest in the Longhorns. Xavion Alford was on campus for Texas’ Junior Day and has had some very impressive outings at recent camps. Bryson Washington will commit in July which plays well for the Longhorns who are right at the top of his list. Lathan Ransom is another out of state guy to watch, he is also tight with Kelee Ringo as well.

CB Jalen Kimber (6’1, 170) from Mansfield Timberview is visiting this weekend on an UOV. We offered back in Dec and made his top 10 list a month later. He is the son of a college track sprinter and appears to have inherited the speed gene

He was shown as 6'2 at the last regional camp
