2020 Recruiting - Football

TFB on Kendall Milton --

" .... Kendall isn’t just a phenomenal football player with high ambitions off the field, from the first time I spoke with him and his father last year, it was clear he has high goals for himself in the business world. As such the Texas academics stood out to him, in particular the business school. In fact when I asked him about any substantive differences between his visits, so far, he said, “The only real difference is Texas has a strong business school – stronger than other schools” ..."

Some Sam Spiegelman (Rivals) on DE Vernon Broughton -

"IN HIS OWN WORDS
On Texas: “They’re doing a good job of making bonds with me and creating a family feel. That’s it.”
On (aggy): “They are talking to me every day and really getting to know me.”
On (ou): “I’ve been talking to Coach Riley and all of them. They’re all cool people.”
* * *
Is there a leader? “One of those schools is doing a little better (job) than the other. I’d probably have to say Texas.” Commitment timeline: “I’m going to make a top five during the summer and a commitment probably later on in the summer.”
* * *
The cat is out of the bag and Broughton confirmed that the Longhorns currently lead for his services. That’s not to say that (aggy) can’t gain ground over the next few weeks or a visit up to Norman would not shake things up a bit. However, Coach Tom Herman and Oscar Giles have put in a lot of early work with the four-star defensive end, and it’s paying off..... This decision is less about football as it is about the style in which coaches court him and his family, and that is an area that the Longhorns are winning. While he’s eyeing a summertime pledge, it would not be surprising if the Rivals100 prospect shut things down even earlier than that."

We've gone from the lazy latter days of Mack's recruiting, and the mixed bag of Strong's recruiting, to this. Great job staff!

Why did Parr drop so much?

He is still top 200 national. But I think he got beat some in drills at the UA camp. Which is a bit unfair given the DLs have the clear advantage. He had some good moments too (see below). You could tell he was guarding his face and head with no pads/helmet (something I would do too under those circumstances).

Ty'kiest Crawford up 359 spots to #69 (now #10 in TX)(6'5,318 OT from Carthage)...

By the way this guy was Baylor's first and only commit but just de-committed from them on the eve of this ratings jump. Supposedly looking at Piglet and FSU now

Interesting that it doesn't appear we've offered. Guess we like the other guys better? (Parr, Lindberg, Majors) I realize we can only take so many OTs, but maybe some of these could move inside?

We are commonly in recruiting battles with OU and aTm for rivalry reasons. Those things can be familial, school friend, locational, image of program, etc. They are what they are. We have recently lost recruiting battles with Stanford and Notre Dame. From a purely $$$ value standpoint, those are understandable. We should hope to compete with Stanford for the best and brightest. They've made a living in that space. We will lose recruiting battles with Alabama, Georgia, and Clemson because of their recent success. That we can overcome by remaining focused on winning the first two battles. Seldom do we see a recruit considering Texas AND LSU, Ole Miss, Arky, Free Shoe, etc. Being sensitive to this being an open forum, we probably will not win most of those battles. For other reasons than those previously mentioned.

Why did Parr drop so much?

Inside Texas does their own in-state rankings. They would rank him 24th in state. Just ahead of Ty'Kieast Crawford --

24. OL Logan Parr, O'Connor - Texas: Good body mechanics and size for the interior. Uses hands very well. Good feet for guard. Like Majors he's interior specific and could play center. Also like Majors, he's always looking for work -- don't stand around the pile.

Inside Texas has Lindberg as the top in state OL (the new 247 rankings has Garth as the top OL) --

7. OL Chad Lindberg, Clear Creek: Not quite a dancing bear but a mauling one with good enough feet to give right tackle a go. Powerful run blocker with ability to play low. Pretty good in space.

11. OL Jaylen Garth, Port Neches-Groves - Texas: Understanding growth trends -- how far a player has come in a certain amount of time -- is often telling. Garth has told the world in the last two years he's going to work to improve as a technician as well as work in the weight room. He has the potential to be a very athletic left tackle who looks more like an athlete than a big ugly.

20. OL Jake Majors, Prosper - Texas: Very high floor thanks to great technique and the one trait that you either have or you don't, nastiness. Understands leverage and aiming points which allows him to play bigger than he is. The main question is, what's his ceiling? Could be a center.

Here is Charles Power (natl 247 guy) on the Garth ranking bump:

"The spring and senior season are big for evaluating offensive linemen, given the position's more gradual developmental nature. Much of this update is based off of the junior season. In Garth's case, he really impressed with his fluidity in his pass set and moving at the second level. He already has a smooth kickslide and gets nice depth in pass protection. He also has some nice strength and finishing ability for a prospect who is young for the class."

Here is more 247 on the rises for Garth and Card

" ..... The Texas class is benefitting from some the movement with Port Neches-Groves offensive tackle Jaylen Garth climbing more than 150 spots to No. 38 overall, making him the No. 1 offensive lineman in the state and the No. 5 overall recruit in Texas.

Lake Travis quarterback Hudson Card made a move up 16 spots in the rankings and now finds himself inside the top 100 at No. 91 overall. Even though Card and Garth are the only current commitments who are ranked among the 100 best prospects in the country, where the other three future Longhorns are ranked shows that Texas has five quality prospects in the fold.

Jaylen Garth
New Top247 Ranking: 38 | Old Top247 Ranking: 191
How He Helps Texas: Jaylen Garth represents a significant head-to-head win over Texas A&M for a prospect who, based on this update, has a chance to emerge as a five-star type talent by the end of the cycle. One cycle after landing as (presumably) safe of an offensive line prospect as the Longhorns have recruited in a long time in Tyler Johnson and two high-ceiling tackle bodies in Isaiah Hookfin and Javonne Shepherd, Texas should be able to hit on a couple of these prospects and emerge with some legitimate blue-chip talent along the offensive front given what’s being acquired between the 2019 and 2020 cycles.

247Sports on Garth: “The spring and senior season are big for evaluating offensive linemen, given the position's more gradual developmental nature. Much of this update is based off of the junior season. In Garth's case, he really impressed with his fluidity in his pass set and moving at the second level. He already has a smooth kickslide and gets nice depth in pass protection. He also has some nice strength and finishing ability for a prospect who is young for the class.” — Charles Power, National Analyst

Hudson Card
New Top247 Ranking: 91 | Old Top247 Ranking: 107
How He Helps Texas: Even though Longview’s Haynes King and Fort Bend Marshall’s Malik Hornsby are ranked ahead of Hudson Card in the latest update, Herman and Tim Beck have seen their faith in Card (who had one varsity start at quarterback under his belt when the Longhorns moved on him) rewarded. Card was ranked by the 247Sports staff as the top quarterback at the Under Armour Future 50 event in January and considering he’s averaging over 6.1 yards per carry in his career and was a 1,000-yard receiver as a sophomore, the current regime’s 2020 quarterback take is a tremendous athlete who has some ceiling left to reach behind center.

247Sports on Card: “Card had a very productive junior year at Lake Travis in his first year as a starter, as expected. The majority of our top quarterbacks were highly productive both through the air and on the ground and took their teams deep in the playoffs. Card impressed with his creativity, versatility in operating on and off script and ball location. More than anything, he just needs to keep progressing his overall game while continuing to add good weight.” — Charles Power, National Analyst

Some comments from Mike Roach of 247 on the new rankings --

5. Resurgence in the trenches
The last few years have been barren up front, but 2020 promises some excellent talent on both the offensive and defensive lines. Twelve front line prospects check in for the Top247, and three of them are already Texas commits. The Longhorns have been able to string together classes based on what the state produced, but they could potentially feast on the bounty in front of them here.

7. Big drops
As the rankings solidify, it’s normal to see drops as others move up. Perhaps the biggest was Duncanville safety Chris Thompson Jr., who fell over 100 spots nationally. Thompson is interesting because he is such a strong fit for other programs that his ultimate destination will decide how good he can truly be. The tumble of Fort Bend Marshall quarterback Malik Hornsby (No. 78) was more likely an adjustment to the huge jump he made in the last set of rankings. Logan Parr’s fall could be conceived of another adjustment to a player ranked very high early on in the evaluation process.

8. Longhorns primed to add more high-end talent
Of the players in the Top247 inside the state of Texas, I’d classify the Longhorns as being in a really good position for Zach Evans (No. 10), Ja'Quinden Jackson (No. 42), Prince Dorbah (No. 103), Quentin Johnston (No. 117), Alfred Collins (No. 126), Xavion Alford (No. 128), Chris Thompson Jr. (No. 153), Troy Omeire (No. 154), Jalen Kimber (No. 182) and Josh White (186). Of that group, I’d say it’s likely Texas can land more than half and establish their class as one of the best in the country again.

9. Who should be higher?
With any rankings process, there will be disagreements. In this instance, I think that Chad Lindberg, Ja’Quinden Jackson, Vernon Broughton and Chris Thompson Jr. are a bit too low. ....

10. Who should be lower?
On the flip side, I think that Jaylen Garth, Ty'Kieast Crawford and Malik Hornsby checked in a bit too high. Garth and Crawford are the opposite of Lindberg with their tremendous ceilings, and they have the power to make an evaluator look like a genius or a fool down the line.....

Some EJ Holland of 247 --

" .... Like (Johnny) Wilson, many high profile national recruits are giving Texas a hard look. Just look at the new Top247 rankings. Of the Top 15 recruits in the country, Texas is firmly in the mix with four from out-of-state — linebackers Justin Flowe and Sav’ell Smalls, cornerback Kelee Ringo and tight end Darnell Washington. Of course, Texas is also right up there with in-state five-star Zachary Evans.

There are already some Texas Crystal Ball picks in for Ringo as UT is the only school he has visited twice during his recruitment. Don’t be surprised if Flowe gets some picks as well once he makes it to campus this spring. Both Smalls and Washington have stated they would like to visit Texas this offseason as well.

But it doesn’t just stop with the true cream of the crop. Texas hosted elite California running back Kendall Milton, who is ranked No. 22, over the weekend. Arizona running back Bijan Robinson checked in and No. 26 and plans to see Texas at some point in the next two months. The aforementioned Wilson, who is ranked No. 32, loves Texas and has the Longhorns in his final five.

Texas has already played host to Michigan offensive lineman Justin Rogers, Oklahoma defensive back Myles Slusher, Arizona defensive end Jason Harris, Tennessee offensive lineman Chris Morris and Oklahoma wide receiver Javian Hester. All are ranked inside the new Top247. The Longhorns are also in line to receive spring visits from guys like Arizona defensive back Lathan Ransom, Arizona linebacker Damian Sellers, Washington running back Sam Adams II, Louisiana defensive lineman Jacobian Guillory. Again, all are inside the new Top247.

By the way, Texas already holds a commitment from Missouri athlete Mookie Cooper, who is ranked No. 122. Herman has made it clear that he is going to find the best talent. Period. And he’s doing just that."

And there it is
I thought we would wait until post-Braun visit

I wonder if this is an indication of the coaching staff's thoughts on our chances with Braun or the other Grad transfer offensive linemen? I really wanted Braun. I think he could have been a difference maker inside for us next year. Do we have any idea how many slots we have left for this class?
