2020 Recruiting - Football

TFB has a new post called "Big News Likely on the way."

"Just a heads up, there is likely to be some pretty major news coming out later today that could impact Texas…in a good way. I’m sorry to be the, “I know something but can’t tell you” guy. But when this news drops and again, it’s likely to happen today, you’ll know it was what this was in reference to."

What did I miss?

They are now saying news might not break until tomorrow
The latest rumor is
McCoy
. But that is hard to believe

If he can successfully argue that he commited because of Kliff Kingsbury and he would not have done that had he known then he may be able to get a waiver or is that wishful thinking?

He might not have signed the official form, but the form that binds the school.

Willis Mackey would have been a great test case. Started and RB at Washington as a true freshman, and kicked our *** in the Sun Bowl. Then he registered in Austin one morning in the following fall, then registered in Norman that afternoon, but played RB at SWT that year.

Mackey went on to get his degree in San Marcus, his Masters at Prairie View, and his PhD from A&M. Was Superintendent at Navasota, Port Arthur, and Judson ISD, with a brief stop as assistant superintendent at Beaumont.

If Fenves was president of USC, I'd buy that, but the people funding that private school at Figueroa & Exposition aren't nearly that stupid.

but ..... this is a Rivals West Coast reporter

The way the transfer portal goes is that it is the school who puts the name in, not the player. The player first tells the compliance officer or "other authorized athletics administrator" and they then have 2 business days to make the entry. They cannot block the request.
,
So .... maybe .... he did make the request and people found out, but USC is going to use those 2 full days to try and talk him out of it before they have to make the entry?

Lastly, there was an LATimes article about an emergency BOD meeting at USC

This is EJHolland of 247 from tonight --

"I was told to keep quiet about it, but our USC reported that Bru McCoy is considering entering the transfer portal. Now that the cat is out of the bag with 'the big news,' here is what I know.

— McCoy met with the USC staff and compliance earlier today.
— McCoy entered the day with intentions to enter the transfer portal.
— I'm not sure the exact details of the meeting, but if McCoy did end up filing his request to enter the portal, there is up to a 48 hour window before his name is entered in the portal.
— McCoy is still not in the portal. He could end up staying at USC.
— If McCoy enters the portal, Texas will have the best shot to land him.
— Texas has not been in contact with McCoy. That would be considered tampering"

So he'd have to sit out a year right since he went to class?

I think that is correct, unless he were somehow able to secure a waiver.
Then again, since this news broke prematurely, maybe some mysterious USC bagman will magically appear on the McCoy's doorstep? It's not like it has never happened before

This is one of those situations where I think he would get a waiver to play immediately. He never signed a LOI and that mucks up the water a bit for the NCAA so my guess is if he transfers out of USC he does so as a free man. My opinion on this comes from what happened with the Baylor kids after the Briles situation.

.....

Here is an article about new NLI waiver procedures
79% of the football requests were granted in the last cycle
The biggest reason being coaching changes. Although those were mostly head coaches, while here we have Coach Bro leaving (who has still not been replaced at OC)

" ..... A request for immediate eligibility can now be granted if the transfer was due to “documented mitigating circumstances that are outside the student-athlete’s control and directly impact the health, safety and well-being of the student-athlete.”

There is a lot of wiggle room in there for discussion...."

Revamped NCAA waiver policy helps transfers play right away
