2020 Recruiting - Football

TFB thinks we get another this week (not named either Alford or Jordan)

And here is Texas247 on this question. The names they give are Ty Jordan, Alfred Collins, Quentin Johnston, Javian Hester and Josh Eaton

Speaking of aggy, here was the take by aggy recruiting expert Hammy on the commitment of Sam Ehlinger, back in the day

It's so wild that we have the 6th ranked recruiting class in the country and we've missed out on the Top 5 players in the state! 4 of those guys are 5-stars.

Rank Player Pos
1
Zachary Evans
North Shore (Houston, TX)
RB
2
Demond Demas
Tomball (Tomball, TX)
WR
3
Jase McClellan
Aledo (Aledo, TX)
RB
4
Drew Sanders
Ryan (Denton, TX)
ATH
5
Jaylon Jones
Steele (Cibolo, TX)
S

Having a Top 20 player from out of state in Bijan really helps. But we've got such a strong, quality group of Top 100/250 commits.

Honest question here because I get almost all of my recruiting info here and dont really do lots of research. How hard did we go after these guys? I feel like Herman is going after a very specific body type and athletic ability for each position. He doesn't seem to care where they come from. I mean I can't imagine anyone is happy about losing out on 5 star players in our own back yard, but as slow as the commits have come in he's not out there throwing out offers to just everyone like some schools do.

I just read about Noah Sewell. He's undecided. 5 star, big fast ILB and coachable. ATM is trying to get him, why not us. It's not like we need LBs or anything.

Another WR on our radar. He is an in-state who committed to tOSU early. Now in contact with us -- high 4-star Jaxon Smith-Njigba (6'1,188) from Rockwall. According to the 247Comp, he is the #8 player in Texas and #10 WR nationally. We havent spent time in here on him because he committed to them back in Nov 2018. Coaches probably should have started earlier on him, dont know why we didnt.
He has a good 37” vertical and terrific 3.91 shuttle. The comparison is Sloan Thomas. At Texas, he would be an X or maybe an H.
Sometimes the distance starts to wear on these early commits, we will see. Inside Texas thinks we can flip him with a good season.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Rockwall, Wide Receiver

"Owns above average size with a solid build. Technically sound receiver with good size and massive production against strong competition in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex playing against teams in the largest classification in Texas (Class 6A). Adjusts impressively to the ball in flight. Shows encouraging hands-catching consistency. Fairly quick off the line and effectively subtle in downfield routes. Often gets defender leaning and sells the DB one way to get separation. Possesses adequate top-end speed verified in a combine environment. Flashes impressive lateral mobility that manifests in his ability to get yards after the catch in the short and intermediate levels, as well as the screen game. Can line up in multiple spots in the formation. Drives on routes to leverage defenders into bad spots. May test a bit faster than he plays at this stage in his development. Can improve quick-twitch explosiveness, particularly in close quarters. More of a speed-builder than a burster in straight-line situations, which could affect separating ability against college DB's. High-production receiver with great consistency and a likely high floor and potential to develop into NFL Draft prospect."

Hester says he wants to take his time and so forth. I get that, but at the same time you have to consider 2020 spots at Texas are a vanishing breed.

Who on this board isn't paying their subscription dues? Let's go, people. everyone knows more subscriptions, higher rankings.

One of their main guys, Farrell, is biased towards ou. I dont think he cares about us or aggy. Rivals is probably the worst of them.

Just remembering the good old days when you slip them some dead presidents and unranked kids got ranked and ranked kids suddenly got better.

Excellent question. It’s probably not a very simple answer, and case by case.
I often wonder if the staff, and leaders on the team weigh in on certain guys. 5 star player, but a 5 star jerk.

No doubt Herman judges character and buy-in to the program as components. He does not want prima donnas nor team cohesion disrupters in the program regardless of their talents. It was a team effort against OU and Georgia, not individual stars, that secured the victories.

So the most recent 247 Hornscast/Podcast with Mike Roach sort of addressed some of this.

The part of it dealing with this topic began with the 2020s and updates on TJordan, QJohnston, ACollins, JHester, Eaton, Alford, and LVBunkley-Shelton. This seems to be who he thinks we will close out this class with. Roach thinks we will have 2 or 3 new commitments by this time next week. He said he thinks our class will rank somewhere in the 5-to-7 range nationally.

Then he came with something of a caution about how Texas recruiting has changed and fans who follow it will need to adjust somewhat. He says its "all according to plan" and "they know what they’re doing." When recruiting activity and momentum slows, as they are going to, fans need to remain calm (lol, like we always do, right?).

The sudden momentum we have seen in the last 2 months did not appear out out nowhere, this was always their intent. Our coaches want to go hard on recruiting in July and August, which allows themselves the time do the full evaluations. Then they make their hard push for commitments. They want to fill up the class as much as possible before the start of the season, so they can focus on the season during the season.

He also said that Texas high school kids are starting to believe in Herman and they now see that he has a plan. And so this kind of pattern of somewhat early recruiting success in this condensed time period is the new pattern. We should see this same evaluation tactics and timing for the next few cycles at least. He also added that our guys are not worried about aggy/Fisher whatsoever. We think we will win the majority of battles for in-state kids head up with aggy.

My sources are telling me its Quentin Johnston. HUGE!!!!!

Princely is aiming at being an EE
I thought this story about him was fake news because it just sounded too unreal - but people are now repeating it on the radio
Princely Umanmielen spiked a volleyball in Jimbo Fisher's face at their "pool party"

And the latest with Alford is that the video is done or about done and they think he will announce Friday

Aggy on Texag just now realizing that Herman is eating Jimbo’s lunch across the state. Yes, they got Demas and Jones, but getting their butt kicked every where else.

Mike Roach is at Temple watching practice
Here is some clips of WR target Quentin Johnston - moves well
Also a couple CBs in for us recently -- including the Fong
