2019 Recruiting - Football

I would think parents have more influence on where a recruit goes as does a high school coach. Or do high school coaches influence the parents more than the university? Not saying head coaches should ignore high school coaches, but I think mom is who you want to make happy.

I would say it depends on the recruit and the coach. Some kids are extremely close to their coaches. I know when DW Rutledge was at Judson, whatever he said was Gospel to his players and parents. When Gary Green was at San Antonio Sam Houston he funneled a lot of kids to Baylor because that was where he graduated.

Here is a little more on 4-Star Rodas Johnson who is supposed to be visiting this week. He is originally from Texas, but moved to Ohio in elementary school but with a father who is from Texas. They are both Longhorn fans.

He plays on both O & D in HS but will probably play the DL in college. Johnson holds offers from the likes of Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin, ou and others. He is supposed to be in state now visiting relatives so we are trying to get him in with everyone else. We will see.

4 star DT Rodas Johnson --

"This (Texas) is my home. Ohio is just where I live".

Back when I was being recruited as a track guy from what would now be a 6A school, here is how the mail went - University to high school; high school secretary to head football coach; either then into the round file if the coach was pissed at the University (or still pissed at me for not playing football) or back to the secretary for delivery to me (I know because I was dating the secretary's daughter at the time). Fortunately, I made my own contacts at the schools I was interested in.

From what I hear from my son and daughter's husband nothing has changed.

Tell us more about your son and daughters husband. :fiestanana:

Sorry :yippee:

Commitment from the camp alert -- LB Marcus Tillman Jr. (6’1, 220) of Orlando. He is a 3- or 4-star depending on the service and is in the ESPN top 300. Was committed to Florida but backed out back in Jan. Has offers from Clemson, Ohio State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Louisville, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State

I'm thinking two more, I'm hoping one is from Davis and one is from one of the West coach Polynesians.

It is sort of interesting our two biggest LB commits are from the east and west coasts

Anyways, back in June, newest commit Marcus Tillman measured 6’1” without shoes, weighed 218 and ran a 4.27 shuttle. And he measured a 76 inch wingspan.

Plus, he will be an EE

S Tyler Owens (6'2,202) of Plano East getting multiple Texas CBs
He is also a candidate for LB/rover
And reportedly he won the fastest man contest at the camp
https://247sports.com/Player/Tyler-Owens-46049296

We did offer S Tyler Owens, of Plano East
He hit an 11-2 broad jump this season and also ran a 10.34.
Some film highlights embed in the tweet \/
FWIW, Wells likes Owens better than Lewis Cine

Same for Nahlin

Here is IT on Javonne Shepherd, OT – Houston North Forest

How he fits at Texas: Shepherd is a massive human being who played in an offensive scheme that regularly asked him to find and connect on targets in space on outside zone runs. He performed that task with relative grace and ease, which speaks to his athleticism and potential as a left tackle in the college game. Between his quick feet and length, it’s very difficult to to get somewhere on the field that Shepherd doesn’t want you to access. His limited opportunities to play bully ball look really promising but at tackle for Texas he’d still get a lot of fun opportunities to block down on LBs at the next level, a role he should thrive in. – Ian Boyd

Coach says: Strengths – Excellent frame and size for the tackle position. More toned than fat. Long arms. Out of his stance quickly and smoothly. Excellent hip and knee bend. Shows numerous blocking styles in run game. Hand placement is usually very good. Keeps his feet moving while engaged. Able to effectively pull on the counter play and shows some good second level blocking ability. Good motor sustaining blocks well downfield. Never loses a strength battle and has good understanding of leverage. Areas for improvement – Acceleration seemed limited on a couple of plays but this seemed an inconsistent finding. Pass protection film is limited. Haven’t seen him defend against a double move. Foot speed is adequate but only seems to barely get out in front of the quick screen. This may be an issue against faster collegiate players.

How this affects Texas: Big, strong, and barely scratching the surface of his potential. A left tackle in potential, a right tackle in reality. He’s got the feet, strong punch, and disposition to hold down the blind side. He’s a little raw ..... – Justin Wells

Such a huge get for the university. Can't say enough about this one. And to hear the kinds of comments we've been hearing out of recruits on Herb Hand bodes extremely well for the future of the program. Hand has been great for UT so far. Welcome Javonne. You get bonus points for making aggie cry.
