2018 Recruiting - WBB

Finally found some individual stats for Sedona in the game against Mexia and, wow...

"In a closer than expected game on Friday night vs Mexia, Liberty Hill’s Sedona Prince showed how she can leave a physical imprint on a game: 14 points, 23 rebounds, and 14 blocks. This production is key to their Region 3 repeat."

Some good news in light of last night's disaster - Liberty Hill defeated Wheatley, Sedona with 20 pts, 16 rebounds, 5 blocks.

I am for sure open to some good news on sunday.......while we await some good news from beating KState on Big Monday. I for sure will look forward to watching SP at the state tourney on TV. Digressing for 5 miutes........is this the "Houston" Wheatley team? If it is....it brings back memories of I think 1968 or 1969 or 1970 when the great Houston Wheatley boys teams(Dwight Jones, etc.) dominated the state for years. I stood in line at Gregory for 4 plus hours to get tickets. It was Houston Wheatley against Dallas Thomas Jefferson. That was when integration was in its infancy and it was the all black Wheatley against the all white TJ Rebels. Gregory was split 50/50 and was filled to the rafters and was raucious. Wheatley won and scored over 100 and TJ was in the 90's. What a game! It was the best used undergraduate time (skipping class Physics EE). Guess I have divulged my approximate age now. If this isn't the Houston Wheatley school.....then sorry to waste five minutes of your time.

Glad Sedona's Liberty Hill squad will be at the state tourney.

Other talented players whose teams advanced to San Antonio:

- 2018 Zarielle Green of Duncanville; really wish we could get involved with her

- 2018 Charli Collier (UConn) of Barbers Hill

- 2017 Vivian Gray (Fort Collins) of Argyle

- 2017 Chennedy Carter (A&M) of Mansfield Timberview

- 2017 Didi Richards (Baylor) of Cypress Ranch

-+Both Duncanville and Mansfield Timberview were behind in the fourth quarter yesterday. Green for Duncanville and Carter for Mansfield stepped up big to bring them back. I think both teams will be favorites to win in their classes.........but it does show that they are beatable. So perhaps some good, close games this year.

Sedona and Liberty Hill advance to state championship game with 49-45 win. Sedona with 17 points and 16 boards.

Was at the game and was very surprised how little Sedona played with her back to the basket on offense. She lived off of the 8-12 foot turn around shot and hit one 3. She only had one put back off of an offensive rebound that I recall. She was a huge force in the middle on defense and that's where she got most her rebounds. It was a Great game though as Liberty Hill came back from 7 points down with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter to win.

A little video from the game:

First team getting to see Zarielle Green and Didi Richards in a game. Green reminds me of Sheryl Swoopes in so many ways. Richards has a lot of skills; she has hit several soft jumpers, is a good free throw shooter, and has the length to defend well.

Tough break we couldn't hold on to Richards' commitment. And, unfortunate we aren't in the picture for Green as she would be a perfect replacement for Ariel.

Both are silky smooth.

Argyle beat Liberty Hill 40-30 today in 4A
Canyon beat Mansfield Timberview by 2 points in 5A
I think this is something like the 3rd year in a row that Argyle has beaten Liberty Hill in the state tourney - the past 2 years it was in the semifinals. Sedona had 10 points, 13 rebounds in the low scoring affair.

On a completely unrelated note, saw that Nazareth won their 21st class A state title over the last 40 years earlier in the morning. My father's family was from Nazareth and I lived there a few years as a kid. Small farming community of around 300-350 people absolutely lives for girls' basketball.

Rellah and Chasity named to WBCA All-American team. I will be very interested to see Rellah's official height when she gets here.

Women's Basketball signees named WBCA All-Americans
Rellah Boothe and Chasity Patterson are among 10 WBCA All-Americans nationally.
Mar. 06, 2017 Women's Basketball

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas women's basketball signees Rellah Boothe and Chasity Patterson are two of 10 high school basketball players nationally who have been named to the 2017 WBCA High School Coaches' All-American Team, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Monday.

The 10-member Coaches' All-America team in each division is selected by a committee of WBCA member coaches in that division.

Boothe and Patterson comprise the nation's No. 3 recruiting class, according to ESPN.com. Boothe is a 6-foot-3 forward from Ocala, Fla., and Patterson is a 5-foot-5 point guard from Houston, Texas. Earlier this year, both were named McDonald's High School All-Americans and will participate in the Jordan Brand Classic.

Boothe, the nation's No. 3 overall player and the 1 prospect at the forward position, is a versatile left-handed player who can excel at any of the five positions on the floor. Blue Star Report rated her as the No. 2 player in the class of 2017.

Last season as a junior at IMG Academy, Boothe was named a Naismith Trophy Third-Team All-American. She averaged 22.7 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game and 1.6 steals per game. In a game against Fort Myers High School last year, Boothe scored 41 points and brought down 20 rebounds. She was named a USA Today All-USA Third Team selection and was named to the USA Today All-Florida First Team.

Boothe was a member of the gold medal-winning USA U18 team at the FIBA Americas Championship this past summer. In the championship game, Boothe set a Team USA tournament record for free-throw percentage, shooting 9-for-9 from the charity stripe.

Boothe played the first two seasons of her high school career at Potter's House Christian in Jacksonville, Fla. As a freshman, she averaged 19.1 points per game, 10.6 rebounds per game and 2.2 blocks per game, helping her team to a 32-6 overall record. As a sophomore, she posted averages of 20.7 points per game, 13.8 rebounds per game and 2.7 blocks per game, directing her team to a 38-5 record and the National Association of Christian Athletes national championship. In 2014-15, she was named a MaxPreps Fourth-Team All-American.

Patterson, the nation's No. 4 overall player and the No. 1 point guard prospect, recently eclipsed 3,000 points for her prep career and, in her first three years of high school, helped lead her team to a 96-12 (.889) record. She is known for her floor leadership skills, her athleticism and her threat as a scorer.

As a junior in 2015-16, Patterson averaged 24.5 points per game, 5.4 steals per game and 4.8 assists per game. She was a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-State selection and was the District 21-6A Most Valuable Player. Named to the All-Tournament Team of the state tournament, Patterson led her team to the state semifinals with a 36-2 overall record. She was named to the All-Greater Houston first team. In a game against West Brook on Jan. 26, 2016, Patterson impressively recorded a triple-double with 24 points, 12 assists and 11 steals.

As a sophomore, Patterson averaged 21.5 points per game, 4.1 steals per game and 3.9 assists per game. She was a District 21-6A first-team selection and led her team to the regional tournament. In her freshman season of 2013-14, she was named the District 21-6A Newcomer of the Year and a TABC All-State selection. Patterson averaged 15.7 points per game, 3.2 steals per game and 3.1 assists per game. Her squad tallied a 28-7 record and advanced to the regional quarterfinals.

Seems to me like we also need pure shooting guards in 2018. Are we getting them? I've never seen Routt or Lolo Davenport play, but they are not that highly rated by Hoopgurlz. Neither is Vertenheimer. None of them are in the ESPN top 100 prospects. They all get a scouting grade of 90. Sedona by contrast is given a grade of 97. ESPN isn't the final answer, I know, but...

I don't know about Routt and Davenport, but Vetenheimer is definitely a shooter!

There is no HG top 100 for 2016 yet. It is still the super 60 list, and no doubt that's going to change a lot when updated. Some in the current top 60 won't even make the top 100 when the list is revised, and some others will be added. Both Davenport and Routt are elite guards, and along with top 10 Prince are the foundation for a tremendous class. And agree, Smith, Egbo and Veitenheimer would all be great additions for 2018.

I have seen Veitenheimer and Davenport play but not Routt. I would say Veitenheimer is the only shooter in the group and rate them......1. Veitenheimer 2. Routt. 3. Davenport.

Well, not being able to land elite shooters with length like Didi Richards and Megan Walker for 2017 really magnifies that need for 2018; I'm still holding out hope that we are able to add that type of player for 2017, but it would have to be a JUCO or international player as there don't seem to be at unsigned from the high school senior class.

Chasity definitely brings great all-around shooting to our roster; but, not the length to play out on the wing. I know Rellah can score, but haven't really seen her labeled as a "shooter"; I think she's more of a power player and wont' spend a lot of time behind the 3-point line.

For 2018, I don't think Shae Routt is know for her outside shooting. But, it is so hard to find stats on her since she transferred to Austin Reagan a couple of years ago. She seems to have great length at 6'2; I just don't know enough about her skills to predict which position she is best suited for in college. If she doesn't bring great perimeter shooting skills, then she could be a tweener like Jordan Hosey.

As for Lolo Davenport, I don't know either. Most lists have her listed as a Wing, and not a shooting guard. At 6'0, she has good size for a collegiate perimeter player, but not an interior player. Most articles I've read indicate she is playing inside for Plano; that's not uncommon in high school as the players 6'0 and over tend to play mostly inside due to their height advantage over other team. But if she is being brought in to help fill Ariel's void, then I sure hope she has perimeter shooting and ball-handling skills.

Veitenhimer could definitely add more perimeter shooting to our roster; I don't care if she is only 5'7. She seems to have a very good mid-range game, and that really helps against zone defenses. And, having natural point guard skills is always a great asset. Hope we can land her.

I wouldn't say 30% from BTA is really a "shooter" but as a point guard, Veitenheimer has other skills that really make her stand out. That percentage may be misleading depending on her team. Davenport is definitely not 6'-0".....I would say 5'-10".....maybe 5'-11". She is stocky which allows her to be effective playing inside. She can play on wing but I don't believe is quick enough to play there against most college teams, I think she is a tweener similar to Hosey. The game I saw she scored 7 points against a quick but small team and didn't stand out. Her ball handling was iffy. I would bet Routt at 6'-2" isn't a real shooter either. I don't see the shooter on the commitment list for 2018 yet.

I did notice the 30% 3-point shooting; but Tatum also jacked up like 200 attempts, I believe. So, the threat is there; if she were to come here, I would hope she would have more wide open looks and make better shooting decisions based on the offensive sets. From the video I've seen, she has the mid-range shooting which not many on our roster have; she can stop and pop. I believe Chasity has that skill, too; and, it is desperately needed.

I think Chasity will be able to bring similar skills as Brooke; she might even be more offensively talented. But, for the 2017 and 2018 players we have coming in, none seem to be the logical replacement for Ariel; that really has to be addressed, IMO.
