2018-19 Season Discussion

After watching the scrimmage, I got to wondering if the players practice the Mikan layup drill/reverse layup drill. They would probably have to do so on their own since I don't see it happening during drills.

watching a four and a half media day special on the PAC 12 WBB teams on PAC 12 TV. Wish the Big 12 offered something similar.

Aston said today that Holmes will definitely be back. And that Prince has not been ruled out for the season yet. That Prince will need to decide but has had a good recovery and that at some time later she will need to decide whether to come back or not. I am torn. Would be nice to have her back for last 1-2 months but also nice to have her for a full 4 years. Aston would not estimate when either comes back.

Good press conference and lots of good information. One thing that stood out was Aston intentionally brought up Audrey Warren as one that will surprise folks. She and Underwood will share forward minutes now with injuries to others. Also was really high on Danni in that she talked about her being a gunner with no conscious...…..can really shoot the ball. Aston seems to really like the team but says that the team we see early will not be the team we see late...……...improvements, freshmen, and player(s) returning. Got me all amped up to hear how the scrimmage goes Wednesday and then for sure the weekend scrimmage with Arizona or Arizona State?

As the self-proclaimed President of the Lashann Higgs' fanclub (no offense to @JoeDallas ), I was disappointed that Lashann wasn't mentioned in the press conference.

Oh well, I trust that Lashann's headlines and accolades will come once the season starts.

Noticed no mention of Higgs. However, there was little or no information shared on several players. With 2 big injuries having to be discussed, I am ok with no news for Higgs and then she have a big year. She is critical to this team being highly successful.

Loved the press conference. Really liked the talk about Jada and Audrey! Two of my favs. :yippee:
I do think Coach meant to say that they will play at the PF instead of the SF as she mentioned several times as they will take up the slack with Joyner out early in the season.

Really excited to see the team in action in games.

I think the scrimmage will be against Arizona. But I could be wrong. :smile1:

I wonder who/where Coach had to go recruit? She mentioned that she had to do that later today.

Watched the press conference. Thoughts:
1) annoyed that they didn't provide microphones for the reporters, again. They had fixed it recently when I and other tweeted to the SID, but now again forgotten.
2) annoying when reporters ask the same question that was just addressed by coach

With current trends, I think it may be ill-advised to count on a player with the talent and size of Prince to use her fifth year. By that I mean that it appears that leaving after four years to begin a professional basketball career, even if the player has remaining eligibility, may become common for players assured of a pro basketball career. The even larger trend is the graduate transfer. I do not view the decision to transfer as a graduate student as any statement about the original school. A player may just want a new experience in general, a different basketball experience, a different academic experience, or a new social environment.

Starters for the are

Hey Kurupt I did attend the scrimmage and the Potluck dinner!
Let me preface my thoughts on the scrimmage by saying the girls played against a boys team. The guys were bigger, faster and much more athletic than the ladies. And they didn't hold anything back. As a result I don't think we got to see a fair assessment of how good the team can be. But that said, the players I thought stood out were: Danni Williams, Lashann, Jatari, Sug and Audrey Warren. I was not very high on Danni Williams until I saw her play and all I could say is wow! She is Basketball savvy, has a great shot, and I would't be surprised if she doesn't end up being the Senior leader of the team. Lashann did her slicing & dicing thru the defense but it was tough to get her shot up against the boys. Jatari looked really strong with her shot but it was almost impossible to get many rebounds against these guys. Sug is clearly the floor leader. Audrey really impressed me with her toughness. She is going to be a contributor before the year is over. The bad news is Joyner was wearing a boot and I heard she would probably not be back playing with the team until Thanksgiving. They are hoping she will be able to play in the Florida tournament. Olamide was also nicked up and did not participate. Only 10 players participated in the scrimmage. Joyner, Olamide, Sedonna, and Shae all watched from the sideline. The other Freshmen, Charlie and Joanne, looked like Freshmen. A little confused and overwhelmed. Chastity and Destiny looked solid. Destiny showed flashes with 2 great drive, dribble and swoosh shots in the fourth quarter. They both looked seasoned as Sophomores but seem to rush things a little. Coach Aston commented that the scrimmage was 2 to 3 weeks earlier than most years so the group was not near where they will be closer to the season beginning and they were not in game shape yet. This was evident in the second half of the game.
The Pot Luck dinner was Great! I love all the different dishes people bring. We had about 60-70 people there. Wish we could have had more. These girls sure deserve it. We are going to have another really fun year watching these girls play.
Great Recap. Another thing to consider: players are not going to risk an injury during the scrimmage so they don't play as hard as they do during a real game. The energy is also totally different than a game. It is more like a practice. Coach Karen stops and tells players what they are doing wrong, loudly, so that all the fans can hear.

If that's the case, I can't wait to see just how physical they are in a real game as they were flying around and it was very physical and tough. Bet Audrey among others had the bruises to show that.

As I looked over this picture:

I went left-to-right in my mind:
Evil Witch ->Who? -> Angry -> Who? -> Poodle -> Trying -> Who? -> Angry!!! -> Yay!! -> Angry

Coach mentioned Charlie would be getting a baptism earlier than expected. I took that to mean she and Midi will be sharing PF....we'll see. No doubt a bunch of experimentation will occur to determine if we can keep the rebounding numbers up while playing shorter players.

From watching the Wed scrimmage and from what she has said, I think Jada will be starting the season at PF with Audrey as her primary backup. While I expect Charli to play some PF when Coach wants to go big, I think she and Mide will back up Jatarie at the five initially.

At least they made it easy to crop out that disgusting thing in yellow by putting it on the end.

Good interview with Coach Aston. She addresses taking the program to the next level and the departure of Tina Thompson.
