Of the four debate moderators (3 presidential and 1 vice presidential), the one I was initially most concerned about was Candy Crowley, who will be moderating the debate tomorrow night at Hofsta University in New York. I am also concerned about Bob Schieffer in the last debate, as it is my sense that both of these reporters have demonstrated a clear bias in favor of Barack Obama through their reporting over the last four years. Of course that does not mean that they are incapable of conducting themselves in a fair and objective manner. But it does raise concerns.
Well, it appears that with regards to Candy Crowley, both the Obama and Romney campaigns have registered concerns about comments that she has made that suggest that she intends to take on a much more central and intrusive role than the Commission on Presidential Debates has intended for this town hall format debate, which is supposed to be driven by questions from an audience of likely voters selected by the Gallup polling organization.
This isn't good at all. The moderators of these debates should try to stay out of the limelight to the largest extent possible, leaving the candidates to engage each other, and in this case the audience with regards to their questions. But of course my biggest concern is who Candy Crowley may favor and provide benefit to if she takes on this kind of unwantedly aggressive role, which I cannot imagine being anyone other than Barack Obama.
