#10 Texas versus #6 Mississippi State

I'm not questioning Karen as much as some of you, but I do agree completely about player movement. I really love a motion offense. Get yourself open. Don't take a spot and stand still. I've noticed Charli looks good at breaking across the lane, but she hasn't gotten the ball much yet

I'm finally watching the game. I don't care if a player won't play defense for 40 minutes. We need to keep and play any player that can shoot the ball and make the basket. It used to be defense wins championships; but now it's Making shots wins championships and o yeah if you're a defensive sound team that helps too. You basically need 5 scorers on the floor at all times. So at least if they are standing around on defense and missing defensive assignments, we know we can go to the other end and SCORE!

UCONN preaches OFFENSE, OFFENSE, OFFENSE. Look at NDs offense and Stanford usually has a great offense. I like Iowa St. offense too. They are always moving, moving, moving.

Coach A just watch the aforementioned teams offensive schemes, learn them and teach them. We know they work. No use recreating the wheel. There's a plethora of UCONN grads you can hire to come and teach it. LOL!!!

O and the game is only going to get faster as the years progress. So look to recruit fast, poised, in shape players over 6 ft. who can shoot and make baskets.

Come on Coach A, you got this!

My take on this game, MSST is a hard team to play, we are aggressive, physical, and well coached. The constant pressure applied by our players wears out and frustrates most teams. Texas came into this game undermanned due to key injuries and that made it even tougher to contend with the pressure. Texas is a good team and Coach A is a quality coach. Support this team by showing up at the game, that will be good for Texas WBB and the sport. Good luck in the future and hope to see you guys at the big dance!

Thanks for the perspective. I expect Miss State to be a FF team this year. Outside of the Horns, they are my favorite WBB team. Good luck the rest of the way...

jmsdawg, does Miss State have a fan forum. I wasn't able to find one and would like to read it.

I disagree about allowing slack on the defensive end. UConn does not play players who do not play defense. Can Auriemma hide a player on defense who is not capable of being a great one-on-one defensive player? Yes he had to do that with Kaleena Mosqueda Lewis. (Having Breanna Stewart helped.) But, TEAM defense is absolutely required. I agree Auriemma will take the greater individual offensive player over the greater individual defensive player. Vic Schaefer might make a different choice but he seems to be doing alright. Taking or keeping a player who WON'T play defense for 40 minutes? No. If it turns out a UCONN recruit is unable or unwilling to meet the work and discipline requirements, she is generally gone by the end of the first year regardless of talent.

yeah, none of those are forums, geewago. Not in the sense that this one or, say, the Boneyard are.
I had already googled those. But thanks, anyway.

Not really, we have elitedawg but that is more a rant and rave board. I do not even post there because the posters do not really post much about WBB. I love the UCONN board, the boneyard. It obviously is UCONN biased but they welcome all WBB fans and most of the post are very well thought out and informative. The Boneyard is as close to a National WBB message board that we have, I highly recommend it to any WBB fan.

Thanks, jmsdawg. I have found that forums dedicated to WBB not that common. A number share the MBB forum or else have nothing available. Frustrating at times.

Thanks jmsdawg, for exemplifying good sportsmanship with your encouraging words on the Texas program. Good luck the rest of the season. I’m with LutherIsMyDog, next to Texas, MState is my next favorite team.

Thank you guys, Texas is my favorite Big 12 team but after MSST I bleed blue for UCONN, mainly because I just love Geno as a coach.

I'm still learning about basketball so maybe someone can help me out. I may have missed it but when I read this thread I didn't see any comments about Texas playing a zone defense in the 3rd quarter. From my view it looked like they were playing a modified box and 1 with Destiny guarding Miss. State's 3 point shooter. During this time Texas went on a short run and Coach Schaefer had to call a time out to adjust to the defense. Question: Is a box and 1 considered a zone defense since 4 players are playing a zone or is it considered man to man since someone is guarding a specific player?

A box and one is one type of a zone defense.
I know Horns have played a two-one-two zone before (near as I can figure out). I didn't catch the box and one. At least Coach is using different types of zones this year.

MSU escapes a scare from Marquette. It was a very entertaining game! Marquette doesn't really play any bigs, and they have very quick guards that can shoot the 3. They pretty much just discombobulated MSU's guard 'weave offense' too. Granted, the MSU guards didn't shoot as well as they did against Texas.

:e-thinking:

The question on box and one zone is a good one. I didn't notice it although wasn't particularly looking. As Babhorn says, it is a type of zone that is used when there is one player that is causing all the offensive problems and the "one" plays her man-to-man and the other four play zone. This is a fairly unique zone that isnt played a lot. Aston's zone this year is a 2-1-2 but with a different twist of having the top guards overplay the outsides and funnel the point guard into the free throw line between them. I did seem to think they were in a match-up zone for a while but they didn't play it long enough to tell for sure. In my fair and biased opinion, the match up zone (popularized by Syracuse men and others) is the hardest to attack well.

I never thought about my second favorite team in WBB. Maybe UVa because of Coach Tina. Of the power teams, maybe Stanford because I like Tara. Georgia because I lived there many years and they are usually underdogs.....Actually, I'm for any underdog in any game (except against us).
