#10 Texas versus #6 Mississippi State

The female announcer is about the worst I’ve ever heard. She talks more about herself than the play in front of her. Both announcers like the officiating as long as it’s in MS State’s favor.
To be honest I don’t care about the announcers. I care about the fact that Texas only scored 22 points in the first half. Did Coach Aston even watch film and prepare for Miss St?

I could of told her that they were going to be the more athletic team on the perimeter and that they like to play an aggressive man to man defense. It’s seems like Sug is the only person on the team coaches included that came to play today.

It's really the TO's that are hurting us....14 to just 5 to Miss St at the half. But they do that to folks. Shooting % about the same, our 3 pt and FT% marginally better than theirs, and - surprisingly - they have just a 4 rb advantage. Clean up those TO's and this would be an even contest. I don't agree with the comments about the coaching, but then again, aren't surprised by them either.

Again, I respect Coach Aston and what she’s done to get the program in the right direction but she needs to go out and hire an offensive assistant coach. Until that happens you will continue to see games like you saw today.

The Good: Sug, Mide, and Joanne.
I thought Sug at least offensively played well today although her decision making wasn’t very good. Also Coach Aston playing Destiny at the point and moving Sug off the ball in the 2nd half to try to score more was a good move. Mide played great, and can really help the team if she can play that way consistently. Her energy, effort, and defense was really good. Joanne also played well IMO on the defensive end. The move to put Sug off the ball and run floppy action like I talked about was a good adjustment in the 2nd half. Coach Aston should have been running floppy action from the beginning because as you saw it helped give Danni some open looks and the offense was a lot better when they ran floppy action.

The bad: Jada, Charlie, and Jatrie struggled today.
I think Charlie has to realize that she’s not in high school anymore. And if she doesn’t go up strong around the rim she’s not going to be productive offensively. I felt that at times her and Jatarie were playing too fast and trying to do too much. And they didn’t do a good job at all rebounding and of preventing Miss. St. from getting second chance points.

The Ugly: Coaching, defense, and basketball IQ was absolutely horrible. It seemed as if Coach Aston didn’t even watch the film of Miss.St. Nothing that Miss. St did should have been a surprise. You knew that they were going to be the more athletic team on the perimeter. And you also knew that they were going to over play and DENY the wing. But Not once did you see any backdoor cuts to make them pay for overplaying the wing. And how many times are the players just going to launch the ball down the court wildly hoping that the player can go up into the bleachers to get the ball?

Every year it seems like Coach Aston coached teams have very low basketball IQ’s. The man to man defense was horrible. But again, that shouldn’t have been a surprise because you knew that Miss St. was more athletic and Texas wouldn’t be able to keep them in front of them. I have to guess that about 95% of Miss St. points came in the paint whether from guards or their post players. And although I’ve been urging Coach Aston to play more zone it would be nice if she tried different kinds of zones because the right zone woud have really helped Texas today.

Oh, man. It's one loss and Texas is going to lose more than one game this season. We got beat by a better team today. I still don't see the sky falling but everyone has a different point of view. Not the same effort and cohesiveness we have seen, especially in the Gulf Coast Showcase. Certainly missing open shots didn't help.

Surprising, I don't think the press was causing that many problems for the Horns. It did cause some problems but most of the TOs were self inflicted. They will learn from this. Fourteen of the 22 TOs were from the starters. Not usual at all. Sug played well but had three long passes that were headscratching they were so off target. I am guessing those were three of her four TOs.

I liked the effort of the frosh, even if they did not score a lot. They were aggressive throughout the game. I am kinda surprised that Joanne did not attempt a shot as she does have a nice stroke.

MSU did not dominate on the boards, as it was 35-30 in the Bulldogs favor. Everyone for Texas had at least one rebound.

Some good things, a lot of bad. Lots to look at before Tennessee comes to town.

Honestly it was the TO's in the first half, shooting stats were basically even, or slightly in our favor at the break (that changed with our FT % in the second, otherwise still close). In the second half the TO margin was just three - 8-5 - and consequently we played them close to even score wise (4 pts in favor if Miss St). You reduce those TO's in the first half and we've got a close ball game.

Overall some good things and some things to work on, obviously. But I think many expected this outcome. With the loss of Lashann we're without our three starting guards from last season, a new PG at the helm (who did great), and playing our first top ranked opponent, with both Sedona and Joyner also sidelined.

We're still getting better, and I think we're going to do some great things this season. In particular with Joyner due back (perhaps this month), and a good chance Sedona returns during Big 12 play also. I'm looking forward to seeing this team progress as we move forward.

She's use to Lashann running those down! We don't have another Lashann on the team. Hopefully Sug will start to remember that soon.

I wish that I was as optimistic as you but history has shown that because of the Coaching in particular on the offensive side of the ball that were most likely going to see the same thing. Again, as a coach you have to put your players in the best positions to be successful. And Coach to the strengths of the personnel that you have. An it’s just frustrating as a fan when you see the same inept coaching on the offensive side of the ball.

I agree totally. Aston do not adjust to the talent she has.

I was at the game, and I'm surprised that the rebounds were that close. It seemed that Miss State got as many offensive rebounds as they needed to get the ball in the hoop--sometimes 2 or even 3. I know at one point in the first half Texas had more turnovers than rebounds. I think Mide was a bright spot. The team seemed to do better when she was in the game.

I was very disappointed. Someone is going to have to step up. I hate that Chaz left with so much season left to play, we could really use her right now. Destiny is not a pg. Continuing to have her back up Sug is a disservice to the team and not letting Destiny play to her full potential. I can only hope things improve when Joyner comes back. Sug could definitely use the help.

In order for Texas to become much better.
Aston need to get home and have a nice glass of wine.
And look at the talent she has. And come up with a system Offensively and Defensively, where each player can be effect.
We do not lack the Talent.
We do lack the Coaching right now. It's been that way since she has gotten to the 40 Acres. Adjust accordingly to your talent.

Let's just look in the Big 12 Team's.
Oklahoma St and Iowa St. a lot of new player's this year.
Those' s 2 Team's look good Offensively.
Even Baylor, their Guard's are not that good this year.
So what's the difference in Texas.
It keep coming back to Coaching.

As you can tell I am very frustration with the Coaching.
I have watched it long enough.
Aston you did not have your team ready today.
Bottom Line.

Yes, Sug was the only person including the Coaches that showed up to play in the first half when the game was basically lost. Although her decision making could be better she was really good not just offensively but her rebounding from the guard position was impressive. I don’t know if coach Aston trust anyone other than Destiny to run the point. And as we saw earlier this year for some reason Destiny was getting more run at the position than Chaz was.

Yes, we are without our 3 starting guards from last year and guess what......SO WAS Mississippi State!!! In fact, I believe Mississippi State only returned McGowan as a starter from the previous year. Vic Schafer continues to develop his players, even without highly ranked recruits. Alot of teams are without players from the previous year, but it doesn't seem to hinder them.

Just a quick observation from the outside looking in. to many turnovers, couldn’t find consistent offense from anyone other than Sug. Not many teams on any level will be able to do so with missing three prominent players. Texas is missing Prince who would’ve been a big space filler and would give the bigs on Mississippi St problems, Holmes who would be another scoring threat who would open up the offense which would give open looks to other players also her rebounding and defense then Lashann who is an athletic slasher who can also defend on the perimeter. That’s some rather large wholes to fill.

As is typical, to some people, if we lose, it is always the coach's fault. Karen wasn't the one making those turnovers and throwing up those bricks. Right now, we're just not at the same level as MSU. Except for Sug, we looked so slow and flat footed compared to them. Looking back at the last two years, we've had a lot of bad luck --- the loss by injury to three of our best players, including our very best (L.H.) and, for whatever reason, Rellah and Chaz leaving. There was a time when we thought those two were going to take us to new places. It will be an interesting year to see how much this team can develop. I'm looking forward to watching us get better.

Guess who recruited those players that looked slow and flat footed and countinue to launch/ turn the ball over at will.

Guess who continues to play man to man defense even though it’s obvious that they can’t keep quicker guards in front of them.

Guess who continues to run an offense that’s predicated on using on-ball screens to allow her guards to score off the dribble when there’s only one guard on the team that can currently do so.

Guess who waited until the game was basically over to start to run offense (Floppy Action) for here players like Danni that can’t create it off the dribble like Sug. And doing so also made it easier to get the ball to the wings against Mississippi States defense that were over playing the wing.

See, to me it’s more than just one game because when you look at Miss.St. they very closely resemble a team that kicks Texas’ teeth in every year in Baylor. And what you saw today is what we see every year against them.

All I want as a fan is for the Coaching to match the players abilities. And for the Coach to actually run a system that accentuates her players strengths and not their weaknesses. Having Joyner back isn’t going to change any of those things. I really wish/hope that Karen can put her ego to the side and essentially hire an offensive coordinator for this team.

Right now, Texas is over ranked for the players we have available. IIRC, the #10 ranking was before the season began and we hadn't lost until today. Honestly, I don't even think the voters at that time took into mind that we would be missing Joyner and Sedona at that time. In the meantime, Lashann had the injury and here we are.

We have 9 players available, with three of those freshmen, and a sophomore who didn't get much PT last season. I think some of y'all are being a little too harsh on Coach Aston. The players we have available need more time for chemistry to develop. I know we saw them play well in Florida, but they rallied for Lashaan. AND, we didn't face a top 10 team like MSU.

I "heard" today that Joyner has been participating in the last 3 practices. Hope she is able to be on the court soon.

As far as recruiting, it wasn't our best day. But I saw Sarah Andrews, DeYona Gaston and Samantha Wagner.

I'm all in Texas Longhorns!!
No matter the Score, The Players or The Coaching...I will always be all in Texas Longhorns!
I want any athlete that visited this site to see me encouraging Longhorn Sports. No matter the records...This is Longhorn Nation!!

It's like this... Over the course of the past several years, despite having a team loaded with great talent TOO OFTEN we have looked like a team not well-coached. The lack of variety in our system seems to make it extremely difficult for us to adjust to teams who throw innovative game plans at us.

Aston has done a great job rectuiting, but even that dropped off this year. I'm hoping that will be an anomaly and recruiting will pick up again next year but I have a gut feeling recruits are starting to recognize the deficiencies in our X's and O's. At this point, I have tempered my expectations and hope that Aston can find a way for this group to come together and compete because we look out of sorts. It's painful to watch... It's ugly... and I'm not just referring to this last game against Mississippi State either.

In watching Aston’s media availability, she mentioned SEVERAL times that “ball reversal” was a deficiency sunday. And Mississippi State’s physicality. We all saw that. She talked about needing more paint presence such as what Holmes might bring. Agree more paint presence would help. She talked about adjustments needed for Tennessee. The biggest thing to work on is HOW to get ball reversal when the opponent denies the pass away to the person that can change sides of the court. Paint presence will help. I don’t have an answer how, with the absence of Higgs, that accomplishing the reversal will happen. Yes, back door cuts will help. Not the entire solution. I will be looking with interest how the staff changes things up to get the ball reversal. Aston has repeated in almost every half-time or pre/post game that ball reversal needs to get better. Most times it was about selfish or too-quick shots. Sometimes like Sunday, it was deny pressure(physicality) I think we all agree that ball reversal is one of those strategies that is critical to success. Let’s see how staff betters that Sunday. I don’t have answer .....other than the denied player screen away and get replaced by the off-side wing. That takes time. Let’s see.

The other big issue is the lack of necessary movement on offense. We just seem to stand around. I'm sorry but it has looked the same pretty much the entire time Aston has had the team.
