Next Coach

I need to amend my post above. I don't think the players have "quit" as they are competitors and not quitters. It is more accurate to say they are demoralized with the realization that their head coach does not have the ability to put them into a position to be successful and when it starts to go bad in a game as it inevitably has in most of the games because there is no game plan to minimize your deficiencies and maximize your positives the players just become a half step slow and maybe even indecisive or try to do things that are outside their skill set. A constant motion, back screens, back cuts etc. seems to me to be the only way to go with no inside scoring threat and to get the ball to Johnson on the move allowing him to be a scorer and a facilitator. Throwing the ball to Tre Johnson and hoping he shoots 70% making 1-1 or 1-5 moves is not a game plan.

I understand and like that you made the distinction.
I wish there were a way resolve this with some compassion for Terry
He has handled this well
I hate that it has to hurt

Texas men's basketball is mucking up an otherwise spectacular sports program. Time to revamp, starting with a new coach.

I don't think it'll be Wright. His retirement sure seemed like a "done" moment, and his criticism of the way things have gone with NIL means that he wouldn't be a fan of putting together a team that can compete immediately.

The buyouts for pretty much every current SEC HC are kind of ridiculous, also I doubt there'd be much interest from all of those guys after playing us and comparing it to how well they're doing.

Here's what I'm thinking at the moment:

1. Drew - he's our "shoot the moon" choice. His buyout isn't public as BU is private. Even with a ton of basketball behind him, he's only 54 and could at least get us going in the right direction and hand-pick a successor, while doing all the things he's been doing with NIL and the portal. He's probably the closest we'd come to instant success.

2. McCasland - buyout of $10MM right now, had good success stealing a coach from TT recently. My big concern is the discipline angle (which we've always had some strange issues) and whether putting together a "superteam" from the portal would yield immediate results versus start a bunch of brawls with other teams.

3. Mike Boynton - got a rough gig at OK State and was well-respected until the practice time allegations. I think he probably could have gotten them back up to 20+ wins per season given more time and recruiting resources.

4. Archie Miller (Rhode Island) - I've long been impressed by his X's and O's. Even though he didn't turn Indiana around the way people thought he would, I still see the improvement and how he gets the most out of the personnel he has. He's often compared to Tom Izzo in terms of how he can take individual strengths and turn them into a solid team.

Anyone watching this Mississippi State game? Didn’t realize all four tires could come off of a vehicle simultaneously. The self destruction in the last 3-4 minutes has been monumental.

Our play and coaching is highly questionable, but there have been at least 6 horrible, blatant no calls from the refs in this one in the last 5 minutes. These zebras shouldn’t be calling a Town &. Country league game.

How many ways to lose a game on inbounds plays. Unbelievable.
We haven’t lost yet, but ….we found a way to victory!!!

Inbounding and free throws have been problematic, to say the least. Then getting over half court has been awful. If the horns win it will be all heart from the players. Terry is just an interested onlooker.

We just beat a top 25 team on the road. The team that beat Beard’s team twice this season and the 7 posts on the game are about how much we suck. You guys are insufferable.

I hate to tell you guys but if we close the season with a win over Oklahoma we’re in the tournament as a 10 seed regardless of what happens in the SEC tournament.

I’m done with Terry too but a sweet 16 run will make him hard to part with.

True. I guess I should be more grateful for winning ugly. It’s still a W.

An old friend used to say, “If someone gives you a sack of money, don’t be a dick and complain about the sack.“

If Mark had been playing at like 60% of the clip he used today, we'd be a 23-7 team. I just can't comprehend our strategy any given minute, let alone game-by-game.

I don't think beating OU will be enough come Bracketology time. We've lost 7 of 10, and 4 were to the bottom half of the conference. I think we'd need some help in the conference tourney to get anywhere from #35-40 in the NET rankings.

I agree. What a win over ou might do is get into one of the play-in games.

Agreed. We need to beat OU and then win at least 1 SEC tourney game. That would put us at 19-14 - still on the bubble and dependent upon how many other bids are stolen across the other conference tourneys.

All last night accomplished was to guarantee no matter what this team will not end the year with a losing record, the lowest imaginable bar. I am not sure that a win against OU and 2 wins in the SEC tourney gets Texas in to the NCAA tourny, at this point they may have to make the SEC final and possible even win it all. A 7-11 regular season in the SEC (assuming they beat OU which frankly I think is unlikely) is not tournament maker resume worthy.

I am not saying there is anything I have seen that makes me think we are a tournament worthy team. But if you follow the experts it isn’t going to take a finals run in the SEC tourney to win. Last night was our 4th victory over a top 25 team and our 5th quad one win.

When comparing Texas to the other bubble teams- TCU, Indiana, Ohio State, North Carolina, SMU, Xavier, Cincinnati, Nebraska, Oklahoma- the so-called experts like Jerry Palm point to a win against the Sooners put us in.

I agree with your last statement regarding the highly unlikely miracle that the Horns make it into the sweet 16. So who will be his replacement? Lots of money required to buyout Terry and a top notch college head coach to replace him. Look at CDC to go outside the college ranks and bring in Royal Ivey. Well thought of, former Horn and likely more affordable.

We need to get this one right. Our men's basketball experience post Barnes has been very underwhelming.

As a Rockets assistant, Ivey is likely making what Terry is making right now. Plus, after his Disney-esque leadership of the South Sudan team, he's basically a stone's throw from an NBA HC job, not a college one.

I'd love to get Ivey, but like we said on the other thread, it'd take top-5 college coach money for a guy who's never been a HC of a college game before.
