Elliott Taking Shots At Staff

Let me wander into speculation about something where I don’t even have good intuition....

Suppose a coach, in motivating current team members says something like, “you all saw Elliott and Williams and how good they were and how hard they worked—well, even that’s not enough. They thought it was enough, but even they had further to go to be where they needed to be. So if you want to achieve your dreams, blah blah....”

Anyway, something like that could be repeated as talking down, when they were actually being used as generally positive examples. Don’t most of us think those two guys’ families would have benefited by developing their products for a year more before putting them on the market?

Or, maybe someone did speak poorly of them, I don’t know.
 
Considering all the other rumors about players giving up eligibility and not wanting to play for some of the coaches and then guys skipping the bowl it may be some truth to what Elliott is saying. Yet and still though if I was in his shoes I would have just let it go, in the long run you still got to where you wanted to be let the old stuff go and go enjoy chasing your dream.
 
1 Is it ok to use recent examples of teammates making the wrong (in the coaches' opinion) choices in meetings? I'd say yes.
2 Is behind closed doors THE BEST way to talk to current players about former players? I'd say yes.

He doesn't like being criticized. I get it. He left early, missed the bowl game, in spite of NFL advice. But now he's airing dirty laundry to the world? Bad move buddy.

I haven't heard any of the teammates criticize the Deshon or Conner. I don't know if they felt "let down." Maybe they did; or not.
It was a business decision they made. And I won't fault a young man for making a decision he feels is in the best interest of himself and/or his family.

I hope Deshon and Conner have excellent careers in football, or anything else they do as they move on in the world.

All ya need to know. He didnt lead his teammates....he didnt lead his team....he says he lead Hermans team. Turns out he wasnt leading at all while only thinking about himself and im not even talking about him skipping a game to declare early.
 
I just don't know what to think anymore... luckily it doesn't matter what I think. Let's assume Herman lots his cool a bit; it's hard to blame him. This is new ground. Be true to your school by The Beach Boys is not what's happening here. The money is too much to risk. The players don't feel loyalty because they think they are being taken advantage of (boy, I wish the Longhorns would take advantage of my son and offer him a full ride) and are going to maximize their earning potential. I suppose there is no greater indictment of the bowl system outside the playoff than a player deciding not to play in the game.

Herman and other coaches will have to take the same approach that college basketball coaches take with the one and done players: "We're here to do what's best for your career on the next level." You just have to suck it up.

8. Mostly so tired of the loss of respect for authority in our country/world and unwillingness to accept leadership however imperfect it may be

11. So tired of players and people saying that College Football players make so much money for their schools that they should be paid. Where do think the money for scholarships for the athletes in non-revenue sports comes from?

And yes millennials are going to have a hard time with this thing called life. Working at Starbucks is not going to generate much of an IRA or a 401K.
 
Not to harsh anyone's "let's call out young entitled people" vibes, but I highly doubt a coaching staff would tell current players/recruits to stay away from Elliott because of his decision to leave early for the NFL and/or skip a bowl game... especially considering this came after a 4th of July party...

I think his frustrations about being selected late in the draft have little to do with his twitter rant. I think he probably was doing things at the party that could have affected the eligibility of current players and that's why the staff stepped in and said what they did about him. So he went off.

Good post, and I agree with your assessment, Horns. I believe you further my points about the foolhearted nature of Elliott's complaint - especially #9.
Twitter and other social media platforms have done two things: 1. Make it easier for people to indulge in immature, irrational, selfish, fleshly, and irresponsible thought/behavior and 2. Facilitate public imprudence so that others may observe this and get a clearer glimpse into our idiocy.
When there was more sense and dignity in our land...and no Twitter, one had the "advantage" of keeping such foolishness to ourselves.
And I believe it much more dignified to air a grievance in person to a few in a captive audience than to air one publicly to countless vultures.

He came really close to leaving also but like Elliott I don’t think either of them had enough game tape to make the leap but if he wanted to leave I wouldn’t have faulted him for it nor do I any of the other guys that went on to the next level. If they can sign up to go fight a war they can go make money as well.
 
I don't like Herman and I can see that he can rub people the wrong way. That said, if I were wearing burnt orange I'd love the guy. So, I can admit the bias.

The movement of players "protecting their draft status" is disheartening. I infer it all went south at that point from a relationship point of view. OU had the same thing with Charles Walker and he ended up not getting drafted.
