What's the cause of the massive unrest of the players

I have not read of what is behind the open rebellion of the the team. I keep hoping that posters with a lot more insight than me would drop a clue.

The unprecedented rebellion of key players from the past disappointing season is troubling. Williams, Elliott and soon Jeggerson to declare for the NFL draft is one thing, but to not play in the bowl game is not normal. Is there a problem between the players and the coaching staff?

I hope that someone can give us outside the beltway types a clue.

Has Texas made another coaching hire mistake? Was the benching of Hill at the root of the problem?

You're over reacting. There's no rebellion. It's just today's players that are more interested in looking out for no. 1 than winning one for the Gipper.

Players who get hurt in bowl games can lose a lot of NFL draft money. I don't like the trend, but I understand it. The Texas Bowl is fairly meaningless. If we were in the playoffs, I'd like to think they'd all be playing.

we do also have more transfers and players with eligibility leaving. i wouldn't have used the same wording, but there is some smoke there.

All of that is true, however, I know am not aware of such a large number of players passing the bowl, crappy bowl of not. The LSU running back pas on the bowl but he had injury problems, like Williams. Can you cite another example of a team that has suffered this number of players not playing in a bowl. Elliott said he was passing to start training for the draft. Wouldn't he get that in the bowl practices? Maybe I am over reacting, but something is going on.

Most (if not all) of the transfer out's were recruited by the prior staff, but, with one exception, saw very little playing time. Hard for a highly rated high school star to accept not only not playing, but basically being no higher than 3 team (which risks not even making the traveling squad). The one exception would be Buechele who is fully aware he is not the coaches' first choice as QB. If he doesn't transfer he risks dwindling playing time over his final two years as the current staff recruits a different style of QB.

Strong ran a lot of Brown's players off, and Herman is doing the same. Not an issue this year, but yes, if it continues past next spring there could be something else to the situation.

How many players constitutes "massive unrest?" How is a junior declaring for the draft "open rebellion?" You're using inflammatory click-bait language to try to vent understandable frustration, but fanning the flames and trying to paint the entire team with this is inappropriate.

I am not talking about transfers. I am talking about players NOT playing in the bowl game. I reread my original post and I did not mention transfers and I said I understand declaring for the NFL. My main concern was about players passing on the bowl game.

This is a new deal that started in a big way last year. Has nothing to do with Texas per se. Kids who will be turning pro after the season see all downside to exposing themselves to 15 more days of practice plus another meaningless game. You can see their point, but it also strikes some as the players not honoring their commitment and basically fitting the typical young person of today - what is good for them is all they care about.

Now what is debatable is the NFL's value on most of the kids. Kids and potential agents over value and the NFL kind of lets that rule in order to get more players into the draft pool.

I’m on the fence about this. Transfers happen with every new coach the guys that are rumored to be giving up football even though they have eligibility left after graduating is what I find troublesome. Like viper said though if it keeps going into next year then we will really have an issue.

i did. i'm the one who brought up transfers :D

because if there is some unrest, you can see it in multiple ways, not just players leaving for the NFL. total players leaving in one year is huge this year

^^^ not that anyone cares, but this is my biggest personal objection.

I fully understand NFL prospects concern about injury risk - but your program predecessors honored their commitment and continued to play with injury risk through the season and any bowl game. In a way it's a player leaving his fellow teammates on the field of battle...

That is fair.

I'd rather have a kid sitting in the stands than "playing to not get hurt". If they aren't "all in", then sit in the stands with us.

The answer is simple. Losing isn't fun.

And at this point most of the players have been having "alignment" shoved up their *** for 10 months, micro-managed down to their peepee color and sports bottles...and all that for a .500 record in which one side of the ball regressed from bad to absolute shite.

I would bet if we had just won a couple of more games this year, and had some momentum going into a better bowl game, no one would be skipping the bowl ... because they'd be having fun, and happily "aligning"

I also wouldn't call it massive unrest, but the OP's point is valid that things aren't peachy and sipping the bowl game is just one manifestation. Herman has his work cut out for him.

Every player that has a legitimate shot at the NFL is making a business decision by forgoing the bowl game. A decision that could very well affect the rest of their lives in a big way. I would do the same under the circumstances.

I completely get it for Connor, but not for guys who have been healthy. And the Texas Tech game was meaningless too, for that matter. Really, so was a lot of the season. The funny thing is it's only the juniors that are refusing to play. I don't see Poona Ford talking about quitting so he won't get hurt. And FWIW I hate the modern trend of coaches changing jobs before the season ends also.

There could be unrest for the Holton Hill suspension. Being suspended for that many games seemed excessive. We did not play as well in the Kansas game following that suspension. The effort by the team has not seemed to be on par with the effort prior to the suspension. This, obviously, is just speculation.

Unfortunately, we as fans will never get clear cut answers to these questions on this subject. I suspect if we were 8-4 right now the number of early exits to the NFL would be down. I do think Warren transfers either way since he was under utilized in 2018. I am not saying that isn't his own doing. He underperformed too.

Yeah, I hate when kids like Jimbo Fisher and Scott Frost quit on their teams before their season is over. same could be said about a kid named Herman last season.

Unfortunately it is a business both ways. Players only get 1 year scholarships that have to be renewed. Draft able players could get injured. Coaches have to jump when the school hiring them asks them to jump or they lose out on $$.
All that being said.......what the hell did you expect when you put personal highlight films above each locker room? That puts the I before Team and fuels the me generation.

When need to recruit players of character and commitment to finish Each play, Each game and Each season. Maybe that is why we are 6-6.

I get that players get a 1 year scholarship, but they should be required to play for the full season. That includes the bowl game. If not, they are sort of short changing the school and in some way the tax payers. Maybe this is small dollars, but now the fans have to watch a team that is missing 4 or 5 key players.

I think making a business decision is fine but the consequences should include paying back a prorated portion of their scholarships. They are compensated to participate in football activities including the bowl games.

What if the entire roster decided to make a business decision?

Why hasn't the decision to pass on the bowl games by made players from other schools? Are our players just making better business decisions? Only 4 teams are playing for the national championship. Leaving early to play in the NFL is a business decision, quitting on your teammates and fan base is not.

These upperclassmen are "Charlie's guys", which adds one more factor into the mix. However, I think it's a lesser bowl, less TV exposure, more of a reason to sit it out. This game isn't going to get us into the top 10, but it could be very valuable practice/playing time for the ones that'll suit up next year....

Why do you think two more weeks of practice will help !! Hell we have been practicing since mid August and what has it done --Did you seethe Tech game ?
