XM vs. Sirius

I was given a handheld XM radio for X-mas, but I haven't activated it yet because I'm not sure if I would rather have Sirius. From my limited research it seems like XM has been around longer and has more paying subscribers and probably more music stations, but Sirius has better sports coverage (NFL, NCAA hoops, Horns games, NBA) plus Sterns moving next year. Plus from what I've read Sirius may have better sound quality?

Does anyone have either of the the two and can lend some advice on positives/negatives of each.

If you're a big sports fan, it's Sirius hands-down. XM just landed baseball, but Sirius has everything else-- including all Longhorn football and basketball games and the entire NCAA hoops tournament.

I got an XM and I second what was said if your a sports fan and want the NFL package and UT sports then take it back and get a Sirius. If you like talk shows and music XM is excellent. I'm gonna get a sirius next time I buy a car.

I also really enjoy the Sirius music channels, especially "First Wave' (80s alternative). They even have the old MTV veejays behind the mike on the 80s hits station.

I can't compare the sound quality as I've only used Sirius, but the quality is pretty good. I get some interference sometimes whem I'm in a big city, but it's clear as a bell when I'm in the middle of nowhere-- and of course, that's where satellite radio really pays off (especially when you're trying to find the Cowboy game while driving back from wherever the Horns played the day before).

Also, one BIG bonus: whenever college or pro football is on, the display acts a running sports ticker. They update the scores as they happen, so you can flip through the channels and get instant score updates without actually having to stop and listen. Genius.

I got my boyfriend an XM radio for Christmas. He never mentioned the Sirius and had done some research on them. However, he wanted it for baseball season (for the Yanks, not the Rangers.

I'm thinking I may need to get my own Sirius if XM is no good for college football. We're moving cross country this summer and it would be nice to have accessibility to Longhorn football every week.

sports fans go for sirius
music= xm now...sirius in the near future

i bet after the xm's contract with mlb expires, sirius will make a huge offer to get baseball too. just a hunch though

hard to go wrong with either. Today was the first Sunday
I spent on the road and it was cool to listen to both broadcasts of the Texan game. Listen to the excitement of the 610 crew and then depressed Jax radio team.

With Sirius, the monthly fee gets you all channels they offer. XM's monthly fee covers only some channels and then you have to pay extra for each "premium channel" you want.

The lifetime subscription for Sirius is equal to the 5 year subscription on XM(without all channels).

Customer service is 24/7 on Sirius and only 18hrs with XM.

Online computer listening is included with your Sirius monthly subcription. With XM it is extra.

Right now XM has more subcribers, but i dont know if that will last. XM is a good company....but i think Sirius is going to be the leader soon.

i actually dont have XM or Sirius. I have just been doing alot of research before i commit. I am waiting to see what they do in the next few weeks/months. If i decide to go Sirius, I will do it by the end of June because that is when they will stop offering lifetime subs.

winstreak, those lifetime subscriptions are only good for the life of you having the particular receiver you purchase when you activate, right? knowing that, i wouldn't feel all too great about such a commitment... what with new technologies and the likelihood that the receiver could very well die.

as it is, the music, news, and talk stations seem pretty much alike. sirius' sports coverage and the one music station i will listen to make it a lot more attractive.

look for one of those free receiver w/ subscription promos. those are neat.

i like listening to Stern on FM, ill probably get Sirius for that reason as well as Texas sports. what is that music channel you listen to?

At face value, the Sirius sports sound great but then I thought about it and realized that I'm in front of a TV for 95% of sporting events that I would care about enough to listen to on the radio. Having the NFL and NCAA tourney and Texas sports sounds great but are you really not watching all of those things on tv?

i do the 'watch the tv, but listen to commentary on radio' kind of thing, so that has great appeal. also, a lot of games just plain aren't on tv.

My research led me to Sirius a year ago. My one year subscription is about up and I will be re-upping for another year happily. That is the best money I've ever spent.

I haven't listened to XM, but I can't imangine that their talk stations are better than what Sirius has to offer.

Sirius has:

A channel created by Maxim Magazine.
A channel created and run by Eminem
A channel for the gays
A channel for firm believers in gun rights (run by the NRA)
A channel for the right wing wackos
A channel for the right wing thinkers
A channel for the left wing wackos
A channel for the left wing thinkers
A channel for European league soccer
A show featuring Lance Armstrong
Every single NFL game broadcast from each team's perspective.
Texas football and basketball (as well as most of the rest of the Big 12)
Most of the Big 10 footabll and basketball
Most of the Pac-10 football and basketball
I believe it also carries hockey but they are on strike so I haven't heard them this year and now can't remember if I heard it last year.
Howard Stern will have a chanel starting 1/2/06.

COMMERCIAL FREE MUSIC
I listen to the dance music (4 channels of that)
I listen to the 80's channel
I listen to the 90's to today channel.
I listen to the classic country channel.
I listen to the love songs channel.
I listen to the alternative rock channel.
I listen to the hits channel.

That leaves another ~70 music channels I don't listen to.

The selection is amazing, the music is top notch, and you will never think of talk radio the same again once you've been allowed to hear uncensored talk radio.

XM is ahead right now, but seriously, if they are putting out as good a product as Sirius I would be shocked. I think Sirius has the bar set pretty damned high for programming quality and I don't think XM will be able to match it in the long run.

I own Sirius and what made the decision for me was the sports... I simply could not sign on with a service that was only offering Fox Sports (compared to Sirius and ESPN), NASCAR and now MLB. I love me some baseball -- but I'm a Rangers fa, so I can pick them up on the AM anywhere I'm going anyways.

It makes my 20 minute drive to and from work every day and the usually once a month trip down to Austin/Houston/College Station/Waco actually enjoyable, which makes it worth the $13/month a hundred times over.

Who says XM only has Fox Sports?

XM has ESPN, ESPNNews, Fox Sports, Sporting News, ACC, Big10, and Pac10 football and basketball, MLB, and NASCAR.

If you like the NFL or MLB, then the choice is easy depending on which is your favorite. I know people with XM and people with Sirius, and they all love it. Doesn't seem like you can go wrong.

I have had both and XM wins by a shitload.

The Music is infinitely better. Sirius plays the same **** over and over.

I thought the reason I wanted Sirius in the first place was for college football, but I never listened to one football game in the car. I love the sports talk on XM. I get to choose from ESPN, FOX, and Sporting News.

The Talk on XM is tons better. If you stick with XM, be sure and get Opie and Anthony as a premium service. It's only 2 bucks a month and will still cost less than your Sirius sub. I can't even describe how funny they are.

I switched from Sirius 2 months ago and could not be happier.

thats what I hear - with Sirius you get too many repeats. XM has a wider variety of music played.

Im gonna get a Roady2 this week.

XM's hardware also kicks sirius's ***.

I found it a little funny that the big plus for Sirrius is sports and Texas sports in particular however the Rose Bowl will be on XM ONLY

The Rose Bowl (as well as the other BCS games) are listed on the Sirius schedule so I think you are incorrect about that (which I find a little funny
