WVU vs. Texas Game 3

The final game of the first conference series takes on greater importance after the loss yesterday. You just can't afford to lose to lose a series to a team like WVU at home.

Chad Hollingsworth gets the ball today and you need a quality start out of him after using your new closer twice already and hope the bats will come alive and help ease the load on the pitching staff as it's still trying to round into form.

The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 today.

Off to get the lineups.

Right hander Chad Hollingsworth gets the start for the Horns in the third game of the opening conference series and needs a good performance for Texas to take it 2-1.

Shortstop and a top notch lead off hitter Taylor Munden will lead off for WVU.
He steps in from the right side of the batter's box and awaits the first pitch from Chad.
He rips a single to left and this guy is just a tough out.

Justin Fox, the third baseman bats from the right side with one on.
A ground ball to second goes 4-6-3 and the double play clears the bases and now two outs.

Jackson Cramer, the big left handed hitting first baseman hits with two gone.
A ground ball again to second and the 4-3 ends the frame.

For the first time this series WVU doesn't score in the first and Texas comes to bat.

Chad Donato, a right hander gets the start for WVU and another native Texan as the Mountaineers has many.

Johnson leads off for the Horns from the right side and looks to get something started.
He pops the first pitch straight up over the plate and the pitcher comes in and makes the play for one down.

Shaw up from the left side with one gone.
He slaps a liner to center that drops in front of the center fielder for a single.

Hinojosa bats from the right side with Shaw at first as the Horn's first runner of the game.
One down for C.J. and Shaw goes and a pitch out and Shaw is gunned down for two away.
The umpire is giving out warnings as he didn't like Shaw's slide as he popped up and decked the shortstop.

C.J. back in from the right side.
He flies to shallow right to end the inning.

One gone in the finale of the series and nothing across.

Hollingsworth returns to the hill to start his second inning of work for Texas.

The left fielder Brad Johnson bats righty as he leads off for WVU.
A high drive to center backs up Gurwitz and he makes the catch for one down.

Catcher Cam O' Brien bats lefty with one gone.
He fights off ball four and pops the high pitch to short and Hinojosa has it for two outs.

Kyle Davis, the DH up righty with two gone.
He drives a ground ball through the hole on a high fast ball to left for a single.

Shaun Wood, in right field grounds to second as the 4-3 retires the side.

A hit, but nothing across for WVU and Texas tries to get on the board in the second.

Donato takes to the mound for the Mountaineers as the Horn second begins.

Marlow leads off from the left side.
A high fly ball to right center is one gone.

Boswell bats also from the left side with one down.
The first full count of the game and Bret lines a shot to left center for a single.

Barrera bats with one on and one out from the right side.
He has been mired in a slump lately and needs to break out.
He does just that with a grounder through the hole on the left side for a single to put two on.

Cantu bat from the right side with two on and one gone and tries to put the Horns out to the lead.
He K's looking for two gone.

Macalla, the DH bats lefty with two gone and two on.
A ground ball to first will strand two and end the inning.

A threat and nothing more and two played now and no tallies recorded.

Hollingsworth back out for the third for Texas.

The second baseman Shaun Corso, leads off from the right side.
The goes full and a ground ball to short and the 6-3 is one out.

KC Huth, plays center field and bats righty in the nine hole.
This time a grounder goes to third for a 5-3 second out.

Two gone as Munden is back up and this is how you like to face the dangerous right handed hitter.
He drives another ball to left and Johnson going back gets it as he touches the wall to retire the side.

Wind blowing in saves that from being the first run of the game as it was hit well.
Game stays tied at nothing after two and a half played.

Donato back on the bump for WVU in the Texas half of the third.

Nine hole hitter and center fielder Gurwitz, leads off from the right side
He flies to fairly deep center and the wind kills it for one gone.

Johnson back up at the order from the right side.
He again swings at the first pitch and again the pitcher will retire him on a 1-3 ground ball out this time.

Two gone for Shaw batting lefty.
He had a single his first trip.
He takes a curve called strike three that he and I thought was low and has a word for the ump. The ump rips off his mask and has words too. Not a good day with the umps so far for Collin.

Side down in order and after three still nothing across for either team.

Hollingsworth looks to keep the Mountaineers off the board in the fourth.

Fox leads off from the right side for WVU.
A hopper back to Hollingsworth and he caught a spike and fell and then recovers and makes the 1-3 put out and one gone.

Cramer bats lefty with one away.
He grounds a ball just under the glove of Marlow and into right for a single.

Johnson up from the right side with one on and one down.
He lines a single by Hinojosa who had broke for second on what he thought was a steal attempt, but wasn't as he would have been there to make the catch.

O'Brien up lefty with two on and one down.
He lines one off Hollingsworth and he gets up again and throws him out as the runners advance.

Davis bats from the right side with two on in scoring position with two down.
A ground ball to Boswell and the 5-3 gets Chad out of the jam and retires the side.

Bottom of four comes and still nada on the scoreboard.

Donato will work the Texas fourth for the Mountaineers.

Hinojosa will start things off for the Horns from the right side.
The count runs full and a very high pop goes to second for one down.

Marlow back up lefty with one gone.
A ground ball to first is a 3U second out.

Boswell bats left handed with two away.
A hot shot toward the hole on the right side and the first baseman on a dive has it and flips to the pitcher covering and a 3-1 out retires the side in order.

Texas goes quickly and after four there is still no runs in the game.

Hollingsworth tries to keep the game knotted at 0's as the fifth begins.

Wood leads off from the left side for WVU.
He absolutely kills one to center and again thankfully the wind knocks it down and on the run Gurwitz gets there for the over the shoulder catch and one away.

Corso bats with one gone from the right side.
A soft fly ball to right and it's an easy second out.

Huth bats in the nine hole again from the right side.
He pops the first pitch to shallow center for Gurwitz and that ends the inning.

WVU down in order and halfway through the last game of the series still nothing to report as a score.

Donato again on the bump for WVU in the Texas fifth.

Barrera leads off for the Horns from the right side.
He pops up foul on the first base side and caught by the first baseman for one gone.

Cantu up from the right side with one out.
A foul off the ump's mask and he is down and out comes both trainors.
He's back up and play will resume.

Cantu steps back in and he fists a pop to short for two away.

Macalla, the DH bats lefty with two down.
An overhand curve gets him swinging to retire the side in order.

Five played and the pitcher's duel continues and so does the score 0-0.

Hollingsworth tries to hold serve in the WVU sixth.

It's a big inning as the top of the order is due.

That means Munden who as expected has hit the ball well all day with a single and a fly ball to the fence in left that was caught.
He steps in right handed and the count runs full.
He walks and the first walk of the game puts the lead man with good speed on.

Fox up with one on from the right side.
A wild throw on a pick off attempt is an error to move the runner to second.
Skip comes out for a meeting and tries to get Chad back on track.
Fox back in now as Skip leaves and he looks to bunt the runner over.
He pops the bunt attempt up and Cantu to the left of the plate makes the sliding catch for one away.

Cramer up from the left side with one on and one down.
He pops up the first pitch and Boswell comes from third and staggers but makes a one handed catch for two outs.

Johnson bats righty with Munden still at second and two gone.
He chops one to Boswell and the 5-3 ends the frame without any damage done.

WVU keeps threatening, but still can't get anything done and to the bottom of six it's still all 0's on the scoreboard.

It's Donato's turn in the sixth to try and keep the game tied.

Gurwitz leads off for the Horns from the right side.
He singles up the middle and that is the first Texas runner since the second.

Johnson up at the top of the order from the right side.
He lays down the sac bunt and the 1-3 moves Zane to second and one gone.

Shaw batting lefty gets a chance to break up the double shutout.
He lines a drive to the oppo side that goes to the wall in left for the rbi double.

Texas leads 1-0.

Hinojosa bats righty with a chance to do more damage with one on and one gone.
He is frozen by a curve and takes it for a called strike three over the heart of the plate for two outs.

Marlow bats lefty with still a chance to at least double the lead with one on and two away.
A looping single to center will get that done as Shaw scores.

Texas leads 2-0.

Boswell bats with one on and two down from the lefty side.
The count goes full and a liner to right is a single and it goes off the leg of the right fielder and Marlow keeps coming and the throw to the plate is late. The hit and the error costs WVU another run.

Texas leads 3-0.

Barrera bats righty with still two outs and one on.
Another full count and a ground ball to short ends the inning.

It took six innings, but a positive number is finally put on the board and it belongs to Texas as they lead 3-0

Hollingsworth, now in line for a win looks to keep WVU scoreless in the seventh.

O'Brien, the catcher leads off for the Mountaineers from the left side.
A high fly out to Gurwitz is the first out.

Davis bats right handed with one away.
He follows suit and sends another fly to center for two gone.

Wood bats lefty with two down.
A high deep drive to right and that lands on Comal Street for a long gone homer and WVU is on the board.

Texas leads 3-1.

Guerrini will pinch hit for Corso with two outs from the right side.
He K's swinging and that is Chad's first K of the day and it retires the side.

WVU, with Wood's massive homer gets on the board and Texas leads now 3-1 as they get up and stretch at the Disch.

Donato has been removed and the new pitcher for the Mountaineers is freshman right hander Nick Wernke.
Cascadden goes into the game at second for WVU.

Cantu leads off for the Horns from the right side of the box.
A fly ball to right is one away.

Macalla,is the Horn DH and still looks for his first hit as a Longhorn.
The count runs full and he takes a low pitch for the first walk of the game for Texas.
Mathis comes in to run for Macalla.

Gurwitz, who started the three run rally his last at bat is up again with one on and one down.
The righty hitter steps in and the count goes full. I would think Mathis would be on the move here.
A walk will put two on.

Johnson brings back the top of the order with two on and one down.
Ben could put some distance between the teams with a gapper.
A 2-0 count brings out the pitching coach and he makes the move.

Pitching change.

The new pitcher is right hander Jeff Hardy, who is long and lanky.

Johnson back in with a 2-0 count.
A high fly ball goes to left and it carries and it goes off the base of the wall. Mathis thought the ball would be caught and went back to tag and as a result, it's a long single to load the bases.
Mistake by Mathis there on the base paths.

Shaw, who doubled to put Texas on the board, can break it open here with a clutch hit.
He steps in lefty with the bases loaded and one down.
The count runs full and a big pitch is coming now.
A deep fly to center is a SF to score a run.

Texas leads 4-1.

Runners on the corners as Gurwitz tagged and goes to third.

Johnson is picked off first, but stays in the run down long enough for Gurwitz to score.
I don't think that was by design, but it scores a run as WVU doesn't handle the situation well.
It does retire the side.

Texas gets a couple of more and leads 5-1 after seven.

Freshman Kyle Johnston comes in to pitch the eighth for Texas. You wanted a quality start from Hollingsworth and he certainly delivered on that.

Huth leads off for WVU from the right side.
He grounds to Marlow for a 4-3 first out.

Munden up with one away.
The right handed hitter steps in against the hard throwing Horn freshman righty.
It's quite a battle as the talented WVU lead off man fouls off pitch after pitch.
Finally he can't check his swing on a high fast ball and I do mean fast ball at 96 mph and the K is two gone.

Fox bats with two down from the right side.
A cue shot to first, right on top the bag is a 3U to retire the side in order.

The freshman Johnston, looked overpowering that frame and Texas leads 5-1 to the bottom of eight.

Hardy back out to work the Texas eighth.

Hinojosa leads off for the Horns from the right side as usual.
A ground ball to third is a 5-3 first out.

Marlow up lefty with one down.

Pitching coach out and he wants a lefty it seems.

Pitching change.

The new Mountaineer pitcher is a lefty hander in Jordan Sergent.

Marlow steps back in against him and a high fly ball to left is two down.

Boswell up again and steps in left handed with two away.
He sends a fly to right and that retires the side in order.

Texas needs three outs to win the series from WVU as they lead 5-1 to the ninth.

The freshman Johnston looks to close things out and get a save in the ninth.

Cramer, the big lefty hitting first baseman leads off for the Mountaineers.
He grounds a single through the left side for a single.

Johnson bats right handed with one on.
Cantu takes a foul ball and needs some time to recover.
He is back and play continues.
A slow change after all the fast balls and no chance to check the swing and the K is one gone.

O'Brien up from the left side with one on.
A wild pitch moves the runner to second.
He sends a liner to right for a single to put runners on the corners.

Davis bats right handed with two on and one down.
A sky high pop up on the left side is caght just fair by Boswell for two away.

Wood, of the long bomb his last at bat is up left handed with two on and two down.
Munden takes second without a throw.
Power on power here and Johnston wins that battle as a high fast ball is cut on and missed to end the game on the K.

Texas wins the game 5-1 and the series 2-1 as freshmen continue to contribute.
Post game time and time for a break for me and be back to wrap up this one and the series a little later.

Texas gets a win it really needed and takes the series against WVU 2-1. They couldn't afford to lose this home series and continue the mini curse that WVU has had over the Horns with not so great teams.

Texas used a quality start by Hollingsworth and then a good outing for the freshman Johnston to get the win. If not for the one mistake by Chad that went a long way on the blast by Wood, it could have been a shutout.

The bats finally came alive in the sixth and put up the necessary runs to back the great pitching and it all added up to a victory that will put the Horns in second place after one series in conference. That's because top ranked TCU is blasting Baylor 10-1 in the seventh and they will sweep the Bears and go 3-0 in the early conference race.

Texas has a rare road game on Tuesday against UTA and then continues conference play against KSU again at home.
You really need to rack up the conference wins at home, especially against teams like these. KSU is another club not expected to do much in the Big 12.

So mission accomplished today, you really wanted that sweep, but you had to get 2 of 3 and Texas did. See you on Tuesday for the game against UTA. :hookem2::bevo:
