NAVASOTA, Tex. — Tren’Davian Dickson was all smiles on his special day.
The four-star Navasota wide receiver officially became a U.S. Army All-American when he received his jersey on Thursday morning. It was a big moment for Dickson, but what came after wasn’t totally unexpected.
Dickson spent a lot of time answering questions about his commitment to Texas and whether or not the rumors about him wavering were true.
“I’m still committed to Texas,” Dickson said. “The stability of the program (is the biggest question mark)… just people talking about is (Charlie) Strong going to be there? Is (Jay) Norvell going to be there? Is he still going to coach receivers? Is (Shawn) Watson still going to be the offensive coordinator? All that kind of stuff.”
Dickson originally pledged to the Longhorns in July. His verbal commitment came as a huge surprise to most pundits in the recruiting community as Dickson was considered leaning towardsTexas A&M.
Shortly after making his decision, Dickson credited his close relationship with head coach Charlie Strong as the biggest factor in his commitment and added that he planned to enroll early.
Dickson seemed happy with his pledge this fall. He made a couple of unofficial visits in September and maintained that he was solid. But a few weeks ago, Dickson went radio silent as rumors about the status of his commitment spread like wildfire.
Horns247 confirmed that Dickson reached out to Baylor, where he was previously committed, about an unofficial visit and just a week later, he made an official visit to Oklahoma.
“I just wanted to see what the official visit process was like with everything going on at Texas,” Dickson said. “I wanted to make sure that if something happens, I have a place to have my options open, so I can fall back on.”
Dickson reiterated that he is still fully committed and has no plans to take any other visits.
It should, however, be noted that Dickson is the only Texas commit with plans to enroll early that has yet to sign his financial aid agreement.
“I’m just waiting on my parents and talking to them about deciding signing it,” Dickson said. “We just want to see how everything plays out. It’s just a day-by-day process.”
At 6-foot-0, 171 pounds, Dickson is ranked as the No. 21 wide receiver in the country and No. 20 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.
To me this (decommits and the failure to have even one top 20 recruit in Texas- per Chip Brown this morning) is the leading indicator of whether Charlie returns or not. That and wins. Ok, so that is obvious but if this recruiting list doesn't pick up dramatically at some point then I would think the snowball is off and running down the hill. The negative momentum will be too much to overcome.
That was quick. Baylor must have convinced him that there was a high risk of Charlie's firing, even after January. I guess it's only too late after he enrolls for spring classes. The obvious solution to this is winning out.
Believe he's a 3 star.Oh, and Charlie lands 4 star DE today.
Scout has him as a 4-star so maybe @moondog_LFZ was referencing that. We've been using 247's composite rankings in our "reporting" which show him as a 3.Believe he's a 3 star.
