Wood for BBQ (in Houston)

The most convenient wood we have gone with for the last few years has been from Academy, but those dumbasses don't carry Oak for some reason. Also, for my last Q' the Hickory I got left absolutely no coals what so ever.. The batch before that, we loaded up... burned down.. and then had a steady fire for hours just adding a log or so. Long story short, I need a source for logs of BBQ wood in Houston.

if you're SW, head out 90, past 99 and on the left before you cross the river are a couple of places with lots of split wood. pecan, oak and I think some mesquite and some others. but a lot of pecan which is great for the grill, IMO.

There is a place just off 290. I forget the name of it but it is close in, maybe Mangum or something like that. It is on the right hand side going out.

Anyone have a similar recommendation in Austin? We're south, and while I can find the side-of-the-road places, a more structured place with pecan, hickory, mesquite, etc would help me out, since I suck at differentiating types of wood (huh huh huh).

Cap'n,

On 290 Westbound just before the Y split is a sign on the R side for a place that sells firewood. "Daugherty Firewood" if I recall correctly. It's white with red letters.

If you want Oak, come out to our place in Drippin' & if you help me do some surgery on a few Oaks crowding one side of the property, we'll split up what we cut. I have the chainsaws...

You can also have all the Mesquite you want, but with both of these, since they're fresh cut you'd need to let them sit before use. For me, I only use Mesquite for direct grilling, never for smoking.

If inclined, send me a PM or Email from my profile info.
