Why move the game to Thanksgiving?

My mom has no idea how to use the internet. When I email my dad, he literally prints the email and takes it downstairs and reads it with my mom. They're old school. :)

I hate it. It really fucks those of us who have later T-day meals and like to spend the day with the family. I have no idea how it's going to work out for my family next year but it's going to be a cluster, with much of my family throwing back at me the times I have complained about people watching TV during "family time."

just put the damn game on saturday like all the others. Noone outside of texas gives a crap about the aggy game right now. Then everyone can have thanksgiving, those that have to work dont have to use vacation days on t+1( i would be one of those) and we can all tailgate and party on t+2 with a game......just like everyother saturday.

I am also a tradition kind of guy. When I went to school here in the 60s, my family just assumed that we would have Thanksgiving on another day. For my entire life until the 90s the game had been a Thanksgiving Day game. I like the change. Nevertheless, times change. If most really want the game on Friday, then that would be ok with me. I would also like to see some sort of survey of Foundation member, alumni and students.

I seem to remember a Thanksgiving night game in the 70s. It was raining. Anyone remember that?

I agree that this move sucks *** as well. To me, T+1 is perfect. Virtually everyone is off or takes the day off if they work for ********. Thanksgiving is not interrupted and you can apend time with your family. I have the exact same holiday "agreement" with my wife like you do with yours.

I am 32 and have been to several of these games this past decade. I will not be able to go if it stays on Thanksgiving. I hate that this game is being moved to Thanksgiving Day.

Some observations:

The last Thanksgiving night home game against aggy was in 1992. the Longhorn Foundation was in nascent stages at that time and very few ppl who had season tickets donated much to get them. Most donated nothing. Believe it or not, most in attendance did not even have season tickets. That being said, if you were a season ticket holder (one of the few) in Dallas, Houston or Abilene, you could give your tickets to this game away to a friend and only be out the $35 the ticket cost you if you had family obligations. Moreover, since so many tickets to the game were available to the general public, Austinites could buy tickets in droves and fill the stadium.

Now, the game has changed. Every non-student/athletic department ticket is sold through season tickets. I donate over $2,000 a year for my tickets. Most other season ticket holders donate a considerable sum as well. Many of these holders live more than 100 miles from DKR.

I know from my experience that I have cost my family already for my tickets. I am sure that we could use that $2,000 a year for something else, but I love the Horns and want to support the school. Thankfully my wife supports me in this. How do I repay her? By telling her that we can't go to Thanksgiving in her hometown anymore? As much as I love the Horns, I can't do that. I can't imagine that I am the only donor facing a similar quandry.

OTOH, why do I keep making the donation if I can never attend one of our more significant home games. Good home games seem to be declining and not being to attend the aggy game would severly limit the number of decent ones. Friends of mine have voiced the same concerns and thought that the same course of action might be in order.

I understand the ppl who always work on T+1/. That would suck. However, there are ppl who work on Thanksgiving as well (hospitality industry). Personally, I wish that they would just play the game on Saturday and be done with it.

My first UT-aggy game was back in the early 80's when I was in 4th grade. It was on Thanksgiving.

I don't think all the tailgaiting and what not will go away, just be done a little differently - hell, just swap out chips and salsa for stuffing and gravy! Your traditions will change a bit, but you'll get used to it.

I like it because I'm a traditionalist as well, but it's going to mean I start hosting Turkey Day at my place every couple of years if I want to go to the game. That ought to be interesting!

I don't know about the rest of ya'll, but part of me dies when we lose to A&M. I want to cry, I want to vomit, I want to rip my hair out, I want to rip someone else's hair out. By the roots. With pliars. And salve their wounds with jalapeno juice.

I don't like the idea of playing emotional games on family holidays. Let me enjoy my Thanksgiving. I agree that when we win, it makes the occasion all the more special. But when we lose, it ruins it. It casts a pall over everything.

If Fridays are inconvenient for people, then I agree with the suggestion that we move the game to Saturday. For some reason, we played them on a Saturday in 1990. And won, breaking a long losing streak.

If the game must be moved, move it to Saturday.

For my family, it doesn't matter when the game is played. We'll go on T, T+1, T+2, T+1000!!

Our tailgate party will still go on and we'll still have a great time. We fried turkeys at our tailgate for the 06 aggy game. We'll fry them again next year.

I personally would love a Thursday night game in Austin against aggy. It makes for a great holiday and an even better long weekend!! Just win, baby!!

I guess I'm lucky enough to have an entire extended family that are die hard Longhorns. I don't know what to say to those who aren't in that same situation. Our Thanksgiving holiday is planned around that game. We'll adjust our plans to when the game is played.

I agree with Captain Murphy. Move the game to Saturday and cease interrupting Thanksgiving Day with friends and family.

It's difficult enough to get to places outside Austin for Thanksgiving. Having to then try to get to a place that doesn't even have an interstate running through it is ridiculous.

It's a horrible change. Our long streak of going to the UT games in aggy station are now at an end. Screw ESPN.

Going to be a ton of Ags at this game. Just like in the '80s.

I was against the move because I felt the Ags lived for this game more than we do, and saw no reason to let them have emotional games at night in Kyle Field. I never suspected we would have so many Ags at night in our stadium.

I'm pretty much with Murphy's Boy on this one. Don't ever want to lose to aggy. Ever. This is why I like T+1 day games. We pretty much dominated this time slot so I hated to give it up. Fortunately we are 2-0 in the new time slot, so let's make it 3-0. Beat the hell out of A&M.

There does need to be a change. Start having your turkey dinner on Saturday with the family. It tastes just the same, smells the same, the celebration is the same.
Your welcome.

The only "tradition" for this game is to play it on TG during the day. It is BS for the aggies to think that playing at night is keeping with some great tradition.

Didn't the Oilers and Cowboys once play on Thanksgiving as well? That is the ultimate Texas Thanksgiving with Horns v Aggy and Cowboys v Oilers err Texans!

Tradition is playing the Aggies on Thanksgiving Day....eat your meal, and then go to the game or watch it on the TV.

I still believe what I did then. I like Thanksgiving to not have the distraction of the game. I've been having Thanksgiving on Fridays so that my Aggie sister and her family could join us. It's better if we watch the game separately.

Move it back to Friday.

I still believe what I did then, as well. Thursday is a holiday, Friday is not. I know several people who are now able to attend the game, when they could not do so before. They are happy, and I am quite happy for them.

Love having the game on T-day, and our family traditions have simply adjusted, just as they have in the past when the game has been on T-day.

I'm bummed that the game went back to T-day vs. T+1 in that I won't have a chance to attend this match up anytime in the foreseeable future. My family lives all over the place from each coast. Thanksgiving is the only time we all get to be in the same city (hell, same State) at the same time. And I have numerous UT grads in the fam so we're all pretty bummed about it.

But we do ALL flood the TV room to watch UT kick agroid in the collective dinger come 7PM. Its not quite the same but we manage. At least we can drink beer during the game in our living room. That has been a nice perk.

As an alumni with a fairly large tailgate...the move back to Thanksgiving Day sucks. We've done the fried turkey thingy now twice and it simply ruins thanksgiving for the older folks in the crowd. Stupid traditions are for aggys...move the darn game to Saturday IMHO.
