Why move the game to Thanksgiving?

What is the impetus? I realize that historically we have played this game on Thanksgiving day more than any other day but many times during the SWC we played this game on other weekends (1990 for example and neither team was on probation then).

If you don't go to this game, yeah, it doesn't impact you. But if you do and especially if you tailgate, this throws a big monkey in the wrench, fly in the ointment.

I haven't missed the game at UT or A&M since 1997 but I also haven't missed Thanksgiving with my parents in my life (we do Thanksgiving with my folks and Christmas Eve with my wife's).

I am wondering - why the move? This butts us up against NFL Network as well which I know this past year had an NFL game on Thanksgiving night (Indy, I believe).

The Friday time slot put us with no NFL competition and very little college (maybe 1 other game).

Not a fan. I hope this deal is to redo the ABC one for more cash in the future. I hope this is like a 2 year deal. I know A&M has wanted this done b/c the Aggies long for the "good ol' days" when they owned us on Thanksgiving night from 1984-1993.

I don't think we need to worry about some stupid NFL game competing with UT-aggy. People want to see this game.

I like the Turkey Day game. It means I don't have to worry about cleaning up.

Friday T+1 is not a holiday, and many people have to work that day. Not me, but many of my family and friends. I'll be delighted if this works out and we can play on T-day night.

Thank you UTEE. Friday is not a holiday. I've taken vacation that week for umpteen years so I could go to the game. Now I can save that week for, oh, maybe June? I hear Omaha can be nice that time of year.

You can argue whatever you like, I'm simply stating a fact. It's not a holiday, and I know many people who work that day-- not in retail, but in High Tech. They would have to take vacation days to get it off, and even if they opt to do that, everyone else is asking for the same days off, and not everyone can be on vacation on the same day.

T+1 is not a holiday, while Thanksgiving is.

I mentioned it to an aggie friend at work and he was happy about it, cause it was back on the "traditional" day. No, it makes it easier for me to watch, or I can go to it now, just as long as it conforms to "tradition"

I would say that Aggies are 10-1 in favor of the change. They are a nostalgic bunch and used to own us in the small window when the game was on Thanksgiving night. Believe it or not, but very few times has the game been Thanksgiving night - like 1984-1993 (except 1990). It was on Thanksgiving day before then.

Anyway, if you don't go to the game or tailgate, this doesn't impact you. I could eat lunch at my parents house at 11am, leave by 2pm and head straight to the stadium getting there around 3:30pm. That leaves less time to tailgate but is do-able. Looks like I'll be doing that. I'm hoping for an 8pm kick. That leaves me time to tailgate.

I'm lucky my parents live in SA.

I go to the game, and I throw a very large tailgate party. This will definitely affect me. But, the game has been on Thanksgiving before, and people managed it just fine then. Things change, but change is not necessarily bad.

UTEE, honestly tailgating at UT wasn't as big as it is now back in the pre 1996 days.

But that said, I can live with it; I just prefer it the T+1 way. I at least hope it is an 8pm kick.

TheFied:

As someone who throws a very large tailgate similar in size to Robert and Katy's, I understand the implications, and I've already been in contact with my fellow tailgaters to see how we want to handle this. It's possible that we'll completely scrap the tailgate in favor of spending more time with our families. Alternatively, my parents have already proposed doing our Thanksgiving celebration on Saturday T+2. We're just exploring every option out there to see what works best.

But as I said, although it's an inconvenience to some (including me), it would be a tremendous boon for others. I know many people who have not been able to attend the game on T+1 in the recent past, because they have had to work. They didn't get to enjoy the tailgating OR the game.

Just because this potential move is inconvenient for some people, doesn't mean that it's bad for everyone, and I'm just trying to illuminate some other perspectives on this move.

Anyway, it has been talked about so many times before, that I won't believe it until it's actually Thanksgiving day, and I'm at the stadium, and the two football teams appear on the field. Tempest in a pot of tea until then as far as I'm concerned.

I could go either way....I kind of like just enjoying T-day with the family with much focusness and then on Friday have singular focusness for the game. This new scheme will require biforcated focusness within a single day. I think I am up to it. I understand it limits the tailgating thing, but new traditions will be reborn.

Tradition!
This is the date the game was played on for eons, prior to aggy cheating causing the loss of the cherished traditional TV spot on Thanksgiving Day. It just seems right and normal to have the game on Turkey Day.

TheFied--

That sounds reasonable. In my professional career, I've always had the luxury of having both T and T+1 off as well, so I've enjoyed the same convenience that you have. But I've seen the problems it creates for some of my family and friends, and I feel for them.

I also attended many UT-A&M games back in the 80s and early 90s when they were on T-day, and I really enjoyed that tradition.

Based on my friends' responses and the ones I've seen on this message board, I'd say there are a LOT of folks who would like to see this game back on T-day-- perhaps greater than 50% of Longhorn fans-- but I do think it would be interesting to conduct the more scientific poll of LHF members that you suggested. Not that Belmont would actually ever really care what their customers want, as you also pointed out...

I like T+1. That day isfor shoppers who don't watch football, and for football fans who will all be watching Texas vs. Aggy. I think T+1 is a great TRADITION even though it is relatively new. Hell you need an entire day to get in and out of Pyle these days. I don't know how you would make a last minute run after dinner.

Ha, you think that Dodds cares about fans who have to work on Friday. Good one. ;-)

I guess they are getting more $ from ESPN.

LIT, I smoked a turkey for the Holiday Bowl. I can do that again for the A&M game as well. I'll smoke it on Wednesday; might need to take Wed. off.......

I brined it and it came out great. Best turkey I have ever had. I better not tell my mom.

It's too bad that HornFans.com doesn't have the functionality to create the survey I was referring to. I know yahoo groups and google groups can.......

I could go with the smoked...in fact it is making my mouth water thinking about it. I was just trying to save you the trouble. You better hope your Mom isn't a lurker on here.
